00:00You have said that your mother, who raised you as a single mother in Apartheid and all of that she went through, was the hero of your life in many ways.

00:07This is a woman who went back to work about seven days after surviving a near-fatal shooting.

00:11It's just a fascinating story of triumph.

00:15What does she make of your life now as an American star?

00:18You know, I'll tell you this.

00:20One thing my mom has done that I never take for granted is she has never quantified her love for me by what I do, but rather by who I am.

00:29And so, you know, when I got The Daily Show, everyone said, oh, your mom must be excited.

00:33And I was like, yeah, she's excited in that I can pay the rent.

00:36But she doesn't get excited for the things I do outside, you know.

00:40She doesn't go, oh, you got that job, so I'm happy for you.

00:42You got that magazine cover, I'm happy for you.

00:44She rather judges me by how I make people feel.

00:47So if she meets someone and they go, hey, your son, we enjoyed his comedy or as a family, you know, we're going through an issue and then we read his book and we enjoy that.

00:55That's what she grades me on.

00:56So I've been lucky in that I'm not chasing a fame to try and get to a place where my mother is more proud of me.

01:03She was proud of me when I was born and that's the greatest gift my mom gave me is that she chose me.
