John Legend & Master P give thoughts on Fatherhood
Transcript
00:00Well I think fatherhood changed me in the sense that I want to be home more. I want to be there
00:12to help my wife and to be there as our daughter grows up. I've always believed that we want our
00:19kids to be smart. We want them to be kind. We want them to be leaders whether they're boys or girls
00:23and we're going to hopefully give Luna all the tools that we can for her to be that way. It's a
00:30humbling thing to be a new father. You have more questions than you have answers and I write about
00:35that sometimes in my song. I'm excited to be on this journey and hopefully we can raise a person
00:43that can go on and do great things in the world. So for me fatherhood is being there, spending time,
00:50not just giving money to your kids. There's a lot of fathers that make it. Even the ones that are
00:57struggling, they're struggling to make sure the kids have something. And I tell my kids all the time
01:03it's not about just material. It's about having knowledge. As a parent, if we want our kids to
01:09be better than us, then we have to spend that valuable time with them. You have daughters, you have to open
01:15the car door up for them. You have to show them how a man treats a woman. And that's what I do with my
01:22girls. I want them to feel special. So I want them to know that when you get around a guy, that guy
01:28should do the same thing that your father is making sure that you're protected, making sure that you
01:33feel like a queen. And for my boys, it's just about being there with them, you know, through good and bad
01:40time. So families got to realize that kids remember. Like, you know, have my father been in my life? Is he
01:46around? And even if a relationship don't work, you have made a lifetime commitment to your kid.
01:52And so I feel like as an African-American father, just a father in general, that I've made a lifetime
01:57commitment. With my kids, I have responsibilities. It's not about me no more. So any fathers that's
02:03watching this, doing fathers, they're like, you know what? It's not about you. You know, like Chris Rock
02:07said, you know, during Father's Day, you're waiting for that big piece of chicken. You
02:12know what I'm saying? That's all we get. We get to tie some socks and a big piece of chicken
02:16and we happy. But I'm just happy as a father knowing that, you know, when you talk about
02:24hip-hop, a lot of us get stereotyped. A lot of us love our kids and a lot of us change our
02:30lives for our kids. I mean, I know I have.
02:37Uh, you know, it's amazing how this feels like you miss him. I think it's amazing.
02:39When the girl is like, what are you taking? Who's talking about?
02:42No. So you have to be, how do you get to dumb, my wife?
02:44I'm the man who loves you.
02:46I love you. You love me. All right.
02:51You look for like the person, she's talking about back-game building.
02:53And then I'm with joy.
