00:00Look, I think that, as I've said subsequent to the election, there are deep differences
00:07in vision between ourselves and the incoming administration.
00:11But ultimately, we're all on the same team.
00:14Seeing the two of you come to the White House eight years ago, you know, it was a symbol
00:21of just how far we've come as a culture.
00:25And during the election and since the election, there has been so much misogyny and racism
00:35and bigotry in the cultural discourse.
00:39A lot of people feel like we've taken a huge step back.
00:43Do you feel like we've taken a step back?
00:46Look, people always ask, you always seem so calm.
00:52And I tell people, part of it's being born in Hawaii, the weather's really good.
00:57You can always take a plunge into the ocean, so that'll chill you out.
01:05But also, I'm somebody who never believes the hype when things are going good and doesn't
01:11despair when things don't work out your way.
01:15The truth of the matter is that when I got elected, there was still racism and misogyny
01:22and anti-gay sentiment in America.
01:28What it signified was that for the majority of Americans, we had made enormous progress.
01:36I think that in the wake of this election, those same elements are still there.
01:43But it doesn't negate all the progress that's been made.
01:46But this is a big, complicated country.
01:48It always has been.
01:49History doesn't move in a straight line.
01:51It zigs and zags and it goes backwards and forwards.
01:54And culture is a complicated thing.
02:00It's organic.
02:02And so you can never just say, all right, we're finished with that.
02:09That's kind of done.
02:11Now let's move on to the next thing.
02:15The battle to be vigilant on behalf of kindness and courtesy and tolerance and fairness and
02:27equality, that's a day-to-day thing that each of us are responsible for.
02:32And I remain hugely optimistic about the trend lines, partly because our kids and their generation,
02:41you meet with them and you talk to Malia and Sasha, the idea that you discriminate against
02:47somebody because they had a different sexual orientation, it's crazy to them.
02:55And I should note, just so that this doesn't look like it's a select sample, I've gone
03:03to college campuses and met with college Republicans and they think that would be crazy too.
03:10It's not just a partisan issue.
03:13And so that generation right behind us, and I believe each successive generation, as long
03:23as we're doing our job of being good models for it, they're going to move this country
03:31forward in a better direction.
