California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned Donald Trump for sharing a racist video targeting Barack and Michelle Obama, calling the post “disgusting, abhorrent, and disgraceful.” Newsom said every decent person—Democrat, Republican, or Independent—should be outraged, questioning how a former president is allowed to spread such dehumanizing content without consequence. He argued the incident shows a deeper moral crisis in American politics.

Newsom urged leaders from both parties to reject hate and demanded accountability, saying silence only normalizes racism. He described the Obamas as symbols of dignity and public service and warned that Trump’s behavior damages national unity. The governor’s remarks intensified calls for political and social pushback against divisive rhetoric.

00:00It's disgraceful, racist, it's abhorrent. Any other circumstance, that person would be fired.
00:05Board of Directors would ask him to be fired, be ashamed and humiliated, and would have apologized.
00:10He did none of the above.
00:11What's your comment on President Trump posting that video of the Obama administration?
00:17It's disgraceful, it's racist, it's abhorrent. Any other circumstance, that person would be fired.
00:23Board of Directors would ask him to be fired, be ashamed and humiliated, and would have apologized.
00:27He did none of the above.
00:30The President of the United States sending out a racist trope should disgust every human being in this room.
00:36Everyone. I don't care if you're Democrat, Republican, Independent, you know, watched Kid Rock this weekend, or Bad Bunny.
00:43You should be disgusted by the behavior of the President of the United States.
00:47And then I'll extend it.
00:49The behavior included, trying to lay out some anonymous staff member, if you believe that.
00:56Lying to the American people, putting out a racist trope.
01:01Disgraceful.
01:02Freedom of the leader of the free world.
01:06I don't care who the hell you are.
01:09That was sick.
01:11It was sick.
01:12Sickens me in my core.
01:14And I appreciate you bringing it back up.
01:15Because I can't believe that was washed away.
01:18Just with another news cycle.
01:20How the hell is he allowed to get away with that?
01:23Do you think he was a joke to avoid the UFC spot?
01:26With public health funding by the White House today, $328 million in the back is for California.
01:30So what is your response?
01:32How do you...
01:32$328 million.
01:33We're getting money?
01:34I didn't hear the first part.
01:35What do you say?
01:35Out of the $600 million rescinded in public health funds from the board of Democratic states.
01:39For California, that's $328 million.
01:41Yeah, we're going to litigate.
01:43We've got an attorney general that's...
01:47Well, well-versed in litigation.
01:49But more importantly, we litigate from a position of strength.
01:54We believe in the rule of law, not the rule of Don.
01:57I hope it's dawned on you and everybody else that your question, what you just asked, framed with four Democratic
02:03states.
02:06Is litigation how we can't to address the law and not fund the law?
02:09Well, when you can't...
02:10When you have someone who doesn't believe in the law or thinks laws don't apply to him and consistently breaks
02:17the law, then you have to use the courts.
02:20They seem to be the only other branch of government functioning right now.
02:23Certainly not the supine Congress.
02:25Not Speaker Johnson, who's nowhere to be found on any of this.
02:29Who countenanced that racial video.
02:33Who continues to countenance this kind of recklessness to the rule of law.
02:39Congressionally appropriated funds that are being misdirected and abused by the President of the United States.
02:48Again, we are very familiar with this.
02:50And this AG is very successful in addressing this in a court of law.
02:55Governor, on the Governor, right.
02:57Would you support a CHP mask ban?
02:58Would you support a CHP mask ban?
03:00Well, I think based on the court's decision, we should move in the opposite direction.
03:04And that is a federal mask ban as it relates to federal agents.
03:07I think the issue that is at hand is ICE.
03:10The issue at hand is of federal agents, period, full stop.
03:13To the extent we want to have a debate about local and state masking, that's a different conversation.
03:18But the issue at hand is the issue of ICE and the issue of federal agency that is abusing those
03:25masks in the context of their operations.
03:28Governor, on the Governor race to replace you.
03:31I have no comment.
03:32None.
03:33Next question.
03:34One of your thoughts on the very large field of Democratic candidates right now.
03:38I have none.
03:39Are you?
03:39I just, it's, and forgive me, I said this a few weeks ago.
03:43I wasn't exaggerating.
03:44It's just not my focus.
03:46It's yours.
03:47I'm focused on my job.
03:48I've got a job, yeah, a sell-by date.
03:51I'm very mindful of that.
03:52But I'm going to run a 110-yard dash in the spirit of the Olympics.
03:56I look forward to doing my job and you doing yours by continuing to ask that question.
04:02Last question.
04:03Last question.
04:05I'm wondering, are you aware of a legislative proposal that would extend the right to remote work for state workers?
04:12Well, I just, I was just talking to, we've got to get these downtowns moving again.
04:18We've got a sense of community and place.
04:22I'm supporting the local deli.
04:24It's been around 20, 30 years.
04:26It doesn't know if they can last another 20, 30 days.
04:29I'm for a sense of community and energy and daring.
04:32I'm for serendipity.
04:33I'm for relationships.
04:34I'm for bonds being formed.
04:36I'm for young people having a chance to be seen and heard and opportunities for growth and promotion.
04:42I'm for, you know, I'm for addressing the issue of loneliness and isolation.
04:47I'm for getting us back.
04:49So, as you know, I've supported that and I believe that we're on track to do that July 1st.
04:55To the extent others have different opinions, I think that's reflected in your question.
04:58They do.
04:59My opinion has been consistent and I hope was just reinforced very clearly in terms of the comments I just
05:06made.
05:06Any other final question with that?
05:09Oh, good.
05:10Are there any particular policies that you, that your administration's playing as a retrospective?
05:16Well, I mean, we're going to litigate again.
05:17What's so reckless about this is, you know well, is, I mean, this is the foundation of scientific reason that
05:24we can advance and arguments we can advance as it relates to our regulatory policies and position.
05:31But they're not even trying to address that because they know they'll lose because they're so sound.
05:36They're trying to go after the Massachusetts decision to go around this.
05:40And that just shows the lengths to which this administration will go to try to recreate the 19th century.
05:48We want to dominate the future.
05:50We want to be competitive, not just against China, but the rest of the world.
05:54We want clean air.
05:55We want clean energy.
05:57We want abundant energy.
05:58We want low-cost energy.
05:59We want to enjoy the tech stack that is part of this revolution.
06:06Other countries get it.
06:07We are doubling down on stupid.
06:10This is profoundly reckless to the economy of the United States.
06:14It is profoundly reckless to the health of the United States.
06:18This has nothing to do with making America healthy again or wealthy again.
06:24Quite the contrary.
