00:00Yes!
00:30Oh yes, oh yes, I am the oh-so-funky Janelle Monae, the electric lady herself.
00:40I mean, okay, no, no, I'm my cotton tofu.
00:42And today on Essence Now, our editors have a few things to say about our new favorite black TV couple,
00:49Beth and Randall from This Is Us.
00:51And, y'all, it's Halloween.
00:54We've got some great DIY makeup that you can use tonight to celebrate.
00:58But right now, time for the hot list, the biggest stories you're buzzing about today.
01:10We're all praying for our girl, Wendy Williams.
01:13I mean, seriously, this was so scary.
01:16During the taping of her live Halloween special, Wendy was in the middle of introducing her guests
01:20when her speech began to slur, she started swaying, lost her balance, and eventually collapsed.
01:25Now, when the show returned from a lengthy commercial break, Wendy explained to her viewers
01:29that her Statue of Liberty costume just got a little too hot.
01:33Now, the show has since released a statement on Wendy's social media pages confirming the host is doing just fine.
01:39They said,
01:40Wendy is feeling much better.
01:41She overheated because of her heavy costume, makeup, and lights.
01:44She was able to finish the show in true Wendy spirit.
01:47Thank you for your well wishes.
01:48Now, the entire world may be following this Trump-Russia story where three, three of his former campaign officials
01:59have been indicted for colluding with Russia.
02:02But according to 45 himself, this is all still just fake news.
02:07Trump thinks the focus should be instead on the Democrats,
02:10specifically lobbyist John Podesta, who stepped down from his firm.
02:14He tweeted this.
02:15The biggest story yesterday, the ones that has the Dems in a dither, is Podesta running from his firm.
02:21What he knows about crooked Dems is earth-shattering.
02:24He and his brother could drain the swamp, which could be yet another campaign promise fulfilled.
02:28Fake News Week.
02:30Meanwhile, one of his boys has already pleaded guilty for lying to the FBI.
02:35Yeah, that's not a real story at all.
02:37Nothing to see here, folks.
02:38Nothing to see here.
02:38So, um, exactly what are the rules for Halloween costumes when you're not black,
02:47but you want to dress up as someone who is?
02:50Well, Kim Kardashian found herself in the middle of that debate
02:53after she tweeted a video of herself dressed up as Aaliyah from her Try Again video.
02:58And Ramona Childs wrote on Facebook,
03:00I'm not a fan of hers, but she killed it.
03:02White women have dressed up like Tina Turner, Diana Ross, or Beyonce,
03:05and it has never been a problem, so why now?
03:08Shawnee Gillespie says,
03:10It may just be a Halloween costume.
03:12However, with their history of cultural appropriation,
03:16it comes off like every other time they try to mimic black women.
03:19Mm.
03:20So what do you think?
03:21Did Kim kill it as Aaliyah?
03:22Or should non-black people just stay away from dressing as black folks on Halloween?
03:27Send us your comments using hashtag Essence Now,
03:30because we're talking about it in Slade or Shade next.
03:33It's Tuesday, October 31st, and it's time for a special Halloween edition of Essence Now.
03:52Welcome to Essence Now.

03:57and you can watch us every Tuesday at 3 p.m. Eastern on Facebook and Essence.com.
04:02I'm your host, Makon Jlovu.
04:04I mean, the one and only electric lady, Janelle Monae.
04:08Do you see the resemblance?
04:09Do you see?
04:10Do you see it?
04:11Do you see it?
04:11I know it, I know it, I know you see it.
04:14Remember, you can talk to us at any time using the hashtag Essence Now,
04:17and if you want to come on the show to sound off on topics with us live,
04:21you can just email us at Essence Now at Essence.com.
04:24All right, it's time to get in on some of the week's buzziest topics
04:27where we're either going to slay or throw some much-needed shade.
04:30Now, joining me in the studio are Essence.com assistant entertainment editor,
04:34Sydney Scott, appearing as Bob Ross, that's very nice,
04:38comedian and actress, Michelle Bateau, who is dressed for Halloween as Marshmallow Man.
04:44And last but not least, we have black girl magic ballerina, Scotty Beam,
04:48who also moonlights as a digital producer and personality for New York's Hot 97.
04:52Thank you so much for joining us in these costumes.
04:55I'm going to have so much fun today.
04:57All right, as I mentioned in the hot list,
04:58Kim Kardashian West went all out for Halloween,
05:01rocking not one, not two, but three costumes over the weekend.
05:05However, there's one look in particular
05:07that got the social media streets,
05:08accusing Mrs. West of, you guessed it, cultural appropriation.
05:12The criticism came for the costume of Kim dressed up as the late Aaliyah
05:16in her try-again video.
05:18LA girl Cricket Smile tweeted,
05:20Legend or not, Aaliyah is a black woman and you're not.
05:24It's offensive and you shouldn't push this limit.
05:26But okay, I roll emoji.
05:28Panelists, on the count of three,
05:30was Kim K's Aaliyah costume a slayed or shade?
05:33One, two, three.
05:34Let's go, hold them up, hold them up, slay, slay, shade.
05:37Okay, Bob, let's start with you.
05:39Tell me what you think.
05:40Okay, I think she slayed the costume.
05:43I get the concern with her, like, history of cultural appropriation,
05:47but she didn't do blackface or anything like that.
05:50She just kept it simple with the outfit.
05:52Okay, Marshmallow Man, tell me why you're shading, Aaliyah.
05:55Marshmallow Woman.
05:56Marshmallow Woman.
05:57Okay, an independent Marshmallow Woman.
05:58I know that's right.
05:59I mean, like you had said, Mrs. Bob,
06:02it's sort of like this history of cultural appropriation
06:04where I'm just like, you know, you married a black dude,
06:07you have half black kids, like, can't you be, like, somebody else?
06:10And I just find it, I don't know why it's so annoying
06:13when Kim dresses up as somebody,
06:15because she did Mrs. Kennedy.
06:18Remember that?
06:18Yes, I remember.
06:19Yeah.
06:19And I was like...
06:20It's ridiculous, but you're making valid points.
06:24You know what I mean?
06:24It's annoying, and I just feel like also for Aaliyah, it's too soon.
06:29Right.
06:29I think it's too soon.
06:30Mm.
06:31Did you have a problem, Marshmallow Woman, with the...
06:34Some people call it a brown face.
06:36They say that her face was perhaps a little darkened.
06:38Do you have an issue with that?
06:39I mean, in general, she's always that bronze.
06:43Do you know what I mean?
06:43Like, she always has the self-tanning thing
06:45and eating lettuce out of a plastic container.
06:49Those are her go-tos.
06:51Okay.
06:51Do you know?
06:52But I'm just like, the world is watching you.
06:54Yeah, black girl, magic ballerina, waltz on it.
06:57It's too soon!
06:58What do you think?
06:58I think, you know, she's been mimicking black women all her life.
07:02I mean, all her life.
07:03She slayed the outfit.
07:04I love it.
07:06I thought it was a great get-together.
07:08She really got everything from that video, which is dope.
07:12But she's annoying.
07:14Kim Kardashian is annoying.
07:15Anything that she does is annoying.
07:17So we are always annoyed by it, period.
07:20And I think that's the only reach.
07:22I think we just were reaching to complain about something about her.
07:26But the outfit itself was dope.
07:29I like the outfit.
07:30Do you think people are just hating because it's-
07:31Not hating.
07:32Because she's been appropriating forever.
07:35But, I mean, we call her out on everything.
07:37And she's been doing it forever.
07:39And since she's now been with a black man, she's with a black man.
07:42She has black, half-black kids.
07:44She now can tell people when to stop being racist and when to-
07:49Yeah, she does that all the time.
07:52But let this child wear this outfit and shut the hell up.
07:56You know, because she's just gonna do what she wanna do.
07:58My question is, can she name one Aaliyah song?
08:01No, she will not.
08:02No, she cannot.
08:03Okay, now let's check in with our girl Kayla, a.k.a. Janet Jackson,
08:07to see what folks are saying on social.
08:09Janet girl, what are they saying?
08:11I mean, they're saying that she slayed the costume.
08:13All right, so Oluchi said,
08:14I don't see a problem with it as long as she doesn't do blackface.
08:17Makeba Hatcher says,
08:18This girl can't do anything without it being a problem.
08:20I think she rocked it.
08:21Christine Norman says,
08:22I get all the back sore,
08:23but we need to stop with the double standards.
08:25Quit giving $200 anger to 50 cent issues, she said.
08:30Bloop!
08:30And Mika Harris says,
08:31Black Twitter,
08:32please become critics and lawyers that get paid
08:34because y'all doing the most.
08:35She did well in my opinion.
08:37I knew the character without the blackface being added.
08:39And by the way,
08:40Kourtney dressed up as Michael Jackson, right?
08:44Folks didn't have an issue with that, right?
08:45It's Kourtney.
08:46It's Kourtney, so Kourtney gets a pass.
08:49I don't see the costume,
08:50so I don't know if I can pass.
08:51Okay, all right.
08:52So let's move along.
08:54Singer Krasette Michelle is being criticized
08:56and praised for a series of Instagram posts
08:58where she revealed she's experienced suicidal thoughts,
09:02suffered a miscarriage,
09:03and was dropped by her record label,
09:05and that yoga saved her life.
09:07Whoa, that's a lot right there.
09:08In one of her captions,
09:09Krasette also spoke about the backlash
09:11that she faced for performing at Trump's inauguration.
09:14She wrote,
09:15When a community sticks its middle finger up at you
09:18and completely forgets everything you've ever done,
09:21you're worthless.
09:21You've spent 10 years kicking your own ass
09:24to be there for everyone,
09:25and suddenly no one is there for you?
09:27I don't need to be here.
09:29While some applauded Krasette for being open and honest,
09:32others say her posting a photo
09:33of what appeared to be the remains of her miscarriage
09:36just went too far,
09:37and that she's merely trying to deflect
09:39from what many feel was justified criticism
09:41for her support of Trump.
09:43Panelists, weigh in.
09:45Should we all give Krasette a break
09:46and slay her for her vulnerability,
09:48or is this another case of social media oversharing?
09:51In three, two, one.
09:52Panelists, hold up your panels.
09:54All right.
09:54Shade, shade, shade.
09:56All right.
09:56Wow!
09:56We'll start with you,
09:59Marshmallow Woman.
09:59Okay.
10:00Tell me, Michelle.
10:00You know, nobody's perfect, right?
10:05And it's very hard to do it all right all the time.
10:08Look at this costume.
10:10But I think...
10:11You look great.
10:13It's okay.
10:13It's okay.
10:14I made a choice.
10:15But I think it's also important to speak on it
10:18and try to normalize things that women go through,
10:21like rejection, like miscarriage,
10:23like suicidal thoughts,
10:24like not feeling like you are enough.
10:27And I don't know that Instagram is always a place to do it,
10:30but if you do have a platform and people do listen to it,
10:32like, look, we're talking about it now,
10:34then that's helpful.
10:35Because it is TMI,
10:38but it's also healing...
10:39TMI for one person is healing for the next.
10:42Damn!
10:43Interesting.
10:45Interesting.
10:45No real in all this plastic.
10:46Scotty, do you think perhaps she was trying to deflect?
10:48Because she did face a lot of criticism
10:50from people saying, you know,
10:52about why she performed for Trump.
10:53Do you think perhaps there was an element of that in that post?
10:56Well, yes.
10:56Well, I do agree with Michelle.
10:58I do agree.
10:59If you have a platform
10:59and you feel like you are going through something
11:01and you feel like, you know,
11:03people will feel like they're not alone
11:06and, you know, with your post, I get that.
11:08I understand it.
11:09I understand.
11:10And I'm sorry for her miscarriage.
11:12As far as Chrisette Michelle as a person,
11:14as a whole, I'm not here for, period.
11:18And, you know, her choice shaming
11:21that she called, you know, standing by Trump
11:23with choice shaming with, you know,
11:25black people are choice shaming her
11:26and all that BS.
11:28I think it's deflecting.
11:30You know, she's just trying to be the victim
11:32of something that she could just own up to.
11:35You could just be accountable and be cool.
11:37You know what I'm saying?
11:38Hold yourself accountable for the mistakes
11:40that you've made
11:41because obviously it was a mistake.
11:43And I would be cool with it.
11:45But since you want to continue to play a victim,
11:47then I'm going to shade you all the way.
11:51Yeah, it's like what Kevin Spacey did, huh?
11:53Ooh.
11:53Right?
11:54That's, ooh, that's a lot.
11:55That's a lot.
11:56Turning into another situation.
11:56It is turning into another situation.
11:58Sydney, jump in.
11:59Yeah, I do.
11:59I feel like she deflected.
12:01Like, had she,
12:02I'm all here for women sharing their experiences,
12:05especially things like this,
12:06because it's tough.
12:07But when she connected it
12:08to how people treated her
12:10after the inauguration,
12:11it was just like,
12:11this is not the time, girl.
12:13And who is her core audience, right?
12:16Black women.
12:17They're the ones that buy her album.
12:19So what did she think was going to happen?
12:21She should ask those Trump supporters
12:22about her album.
12:22Like, we not the ones, girl.
12:23We not got trapped.
12:24Exactly.
12:25Yeah, those Trump supporters buying it.
12:26All those Robert Lee fans.
12:27Let's check in with Kayla
12:28to see what social media is saying.
12:30Hey, Ms. Rodriguez, if you're nasty.
12:32What them comments looking like?
12:33Shade all around for Chrisette, unfortunately.
12:36Yondelle Benjamin says,
12:37give homegirl a break.
12:38She's going through a difficult time.
12:40So she tried to have some sympathy.
12:42But everyone else is saying,
12:43Jessica, you mean Trump's base
12:45isn't your fan base?
12:46Christine Shuck says,
12:47it's career suicide.
12:49People warned you
12:49when you put the rope around your neck
12:50and stood on the shaky chair.
12:52Karen Lane says,
12:53this is a case of having
12:54a warped sense of self.
12:55She made a miscalculated business decision,
12:57alienated her fan base,
12:59started with her behavior on reality TV.
13:01Now she's focusing on her healing,
13:02but her music career is done.
13:04Ooh, ouch.
13:05I gotta tell you, this is...
13:07That's a lot.
13:08All right.
13:08That was a lot.
13:09Back on.
13:09Next up, let's move right along.
13:11Everybody that was anybody in hip-hop
13:13and black media attended the Wapsta's wedding
13:16a couple of weeks ago.
13:17I think my invite got lost in the mail.
13:19But what a lot of folks want to know is,
13:21where the kid's there?
13:22Yup.
13:23According to the newly married Keisha Kayor,
13:25her and Gucci's children live with them in Atlanta,
13:28and they've made a conscious decision
13:29to keep them out of the public eye.
13:31Now, during a recent visit to the Breakfast Club,
13:33Keisha explains.
13:36Gucci and I both have children.
13:38We have children.
13:38You know, we do.
13:39And it's a situation where I am proud to be a mother,
13:44but at the same time, I need it to be private.
13:47I don't want the kids in the limelight.
13:49I don't want them on social media.
13:50I need them to go to school and to just be children.
13:54Hmm.
13:55Panelists, does Keisha Kayor have a point
13:57by shielding her children
13:58from the public eye
13:59or is keeping the kids a secret pointless,
14:02considering the couple already broadcasted
14:04their wedding on TV
14:05and shares the rest of their lives
14:07every day on social media?
14:09Let me see your panels.
14:10Hold them up.
14:11Here we go.
14:12In three, two, one.
14:13All right.
14:13Go, go, go.
14:14Oh, my God.
14:15Shade.
14:16Marshmallow woman.
14:17Okay.
14:18Mom.
14:19Michelle, you're shading.
14:21I'm shading.
14:21I mean, what does she do again?
14:24She's a business woman.
14:25She's a business woman,
14:26but she likes reality life.
14:28So if you like reality life,
14:29then your show has to be on the platform.
14:31So I'm just like,
14:32I don't know that you get to pick and choose
14:34unless you're like the EP of your show, right?
14:36But I don't know.
14:38I'm just like,
14:39if you had another talent
14:40besides being a reality star,
14:42then maybe.
14:42Ouch.
14:43But the Kardashians
14:44and a lot of the reality stars do it.
14:45They tend to shield some things
14:47and show some things.
14:48So why is she examining?
14:49Well, I think if I'm correct,
14:53Kanye West does not want Kim to show the kids
14:55because he actually has a talent
14:57and he wants to be famous for other reasons.
14:59They do not.
15:01That's why Kourtney's kids are all over the place.
15:03Ouch.
15:04Sydney, there's a lot of shade.
15:06Sydney, tell me what you think.
15:07All right.
15:08I'm sorry.
15:08I just grew this beard
15:09and it's like getting in the way.
15:11Yeah, the beard.
15:11It's very nice.
15:12Yeah.
15:13I think she slayed
15:15because Keisha and Gucci
15:18have decided to be famous,
15:19but their kids haven't.
15:21Their kids didn't make that choice.
15:22So if they don't want their kids
15:24in the public eye,
15:24that's their decision
15:26and you have to respect it.
15:27And also it's kind of like
15:28kids nowadays,
15:30you grow up in the limelight,
15:31some of them are like absolutely crazy.
15:33So like you might like
15:34just pump the brakes,
15:36let the kids have a life,
15:37let the kids be normal kids.
15:38I agree with her.
15:39Scotty?
15:40Yeah, I totally agree.
15:41I think if, you know,
15:43Keisha's kids or Gucci's kids
15:44decide that they want to be out there,
15:46then let them be out there
15:47on Instagram or whatever it is.
15:49But some people don't like
15:50posting their kids on Instagram,
15:53on Twitter and stuff like that
15:54because people are ruthless.
15:55Yeah, they are.
15:56And rude.
15:57And I am not one.
15:58I don't have a kid yet,
15:59but I know that once my kid is out there,
16:02you won't be saying anything disrespectful.
16:04It's going to be a beautiful kid.
16:05It's going to be a problem.
16:05It's going to be a beautiful child.
16:06It'll be a problem.
16:07But as far as talent is concerned,
16:09Gucci is a talent.
16:11Yes.
16:11But Gucci could also tell Keisha,
16:13hey, I don't want my kids
16:14anywhere near that, you know,
16:15TV screen.
16:16But that's what I'm curious about, right?
16:18And I'm not even talking about,
16:19like, when kids have a hashtag
16:20for their name,
16:21it's like, stop.
16:22Right.
16:23But, I mean,
16:24this is a televised wedding.
16:25You know,
16:26a lot of people are watching.
16:27This is true,
16:27but I do think the kids
16:28were on the show,
16:28but we have to keep watching
16:29to see.
16:30All right,
16:30we're going to keep
16:31the Halloween Slater's
16:32shade party going
16:33as the natural hair debate
16:35gets reignited
16:36by Portia Williams.
16:37Okay, now,
16:37before we get to that,
16:38Kayla,
16:39tell me what folks are saying.
16:40Okay,
16:40they're slaying Keisha
16:41and her decision.
16:43Sandra Batiste says,
16:44I can respect her decision
16:45of keeping her family private.
16:46No one has the right
16:46to see your kids
16:47if you don't want them to.
16:48Kosep Brown says,
16:49I don't know this woman,
16:50but if she's happy,
16:51God is love,
16:52stay blessed.
16:52Danayla says,
16:56I wouldn't show you
16:57my kid's pinky toe
16:58if I were a celebrity
16:59because people are mentally
17:00off their rocker.
17:01There are more bullies
17:01now than ever,
17:02so I don't blame her.
17:03That is so true.
17:04You do have to,
17:05they chose to be famous,
17:06not the kids.
17:07All right,
17:07we're going to keep
17:08the Halloween Slater's
17:09shade party going
17:10as the natural hair debates
17:11get reignited
17:12by Portia Williams
17:13and Tyrese.
17:15Well,
17:15Tyrese is still being Tyrese,
17:17but first,
17:18our editors explain
17:19why Beth and Randall
17:20from NBC's
17:21This Is Us
17:21are a couple goals.
17:23Watch.
17:30Okay,
17:31Sid,
17:32we need to talk about
17:33This Is Us
17:34and particularly
17:35the wonderful,
17:37magical,
17:38amazing relationship
17:39between Beth and Randall.
17:40Honestly,
17:41if they had their own show,
17:43I wouldn't be mad.
17:44I would sign up
17:45for like all the show alerts.
17:46I would be on Twitter
17:47tweeting my little heart out.
17:49I would just,
17:50I would die
17:50for their own spinoff.
17:51And the love
17:52between them
17:53feels so real.
17:54Oh,
17:54it's so authentic.
17:55It's so black.
17:56It's so black.
17:58The only thing
17:58that would make it blacker
17:59is if she wore a bonnet
18:00and he wore a do-rag.
18:01Yeah,
18:02when are we good?
18:02That's the only thing
18:03we're missing.
18:04Beth,
18:04scarf,
18:05tied up,
18:06with a bonnet on,
18:08going to bed like,
18:09don't talk to me right now.
18:10We're fighting.
18:11Do you see this bonnet?
18:13Once it comes on,
18:14it's not coming off.
18:15We do need to touch
18:16on their tension
18:17because they are,
18:17they are kind of having
18:18a little tiff right now.
18:20But you know,
18:20all couples do.
18:21But this is like,
18:24I feel like so much,
18:26there's so much in this tiff
18:27because Randall is like,
18:30I want to adopt.
18:31Yeah.
18:31Suddenly.
18:32And then Beth is like,
18:33wait a minute,
18:33we got two little girls.
18:35I'm trying to like,
18:36I don't know.
18:37I think they just went
18:37through a lot of transition
18:38in last season.
18:40And you know,
18:41William obviously
18:42was the biggest one
18:43gaining and losing him.
18:45And then that whole
18:46Kevin sleeping
18:46in their basement thing
18:48was weird.
18:49Beth finding out
18:51Randall's secret
18:51before he did.
18:53Yeah.
18:53And confronting his mom
18:54about it.
18:55Like they just went
18:56through a lot last season.
18:57So I understand
18:57why she is obviously
18:59hesitant to make
19:01any big changes
19:02to their household.
19:04But I also understand
19:05why he is so like,
19:06persistent in wanting
19:07to make a change.
19:09But you know,
19:10that miscommunication
19:11is something that happens
19:12with couples.
19:12They've been together
19:13for quite some time.
19:14We still need a backstory.
19:15We definitely need
19:16a backstory.
19:17How they met.
19:18Because you know
19:19it's going to be good.
19:19Fell in love.
19:20You know it's going to be good.
19:21Oh, it's going to be so black.
19:23I hope Randall is like,
19:24I went to an HBCU,
19:26we met on campus.
19:27It's like really cute.
19:28Could you imagine
19:29the video like homecoming?
19:30Oh my God.
19:32Or like a rally
19:32or something cute
19:33on the yard.
19:34I saw her across the yard
19:36and then I knew.
19:37That would be amazing.
19:40You're watching Essence Now.
19:45I'm your host,
19:46Malkon Dovu,
19:46and we are in the midst
19:47of a very special
19:48Halloween edition
19:49of Slade or Shade.
19:51This is where we take
19:52on the week's buzziest topics
19:53with our all-star panel.
19:55And today,
19:55I'm joined by a comedian
19:56and actress,
19:57Michelle Bateau,
19:58who is dressed as
19:59Marshmallow Woman.
20:01They puff Marshmallow Woman,
20:02independent Marshmallow.
20:03I love Essence.com's
20:05assistant editor,
20:05Sidney Scott,
20:06appearing as Bob Ross.
20:08And last but not least,
20:10we have Black Girl
20:10magic ballerina,
20:11Scotty Bean,
20:12who also moonlights
20:13as a digital producer
20:14and personality
20:15for New York's Hot 97.
20:17Thank you for joining us.
20:17Yes.
20:18Ladies, all right,
20:19let's jump right back
20:20into it.
20:20Now, in a recent interview
20:21with Essence.com,
20:22Real Housewives of Atlanta
20:23star Portia Williams
20:25revealed that underneath
20:26all the wigs and weaves,
20:28she's natural.
20:29But here's the catch.
20:30She still relaxes her edges.
20:32Hmm.
20:33Here's what she said.
20:34I will say that
20:35when I'm doing
20:36a lot of bookings,
20:37I'll take a little toothbrush
20:38on the edges
20:39and the perm that I like to use
20:40is just for me.
20:42It's gentle and it's quick.
20:43So, does Portia get a slay
20:44for having her hair that slayed
20:46or is trying to call yourself natural
20:48when you're still using
20:49that creamy crack?
20:50Always a shade.
20:52All right, panelist,
20:52three, two, one,
20:53hold up your panels, please.
20:55Oh, that was a slow shade.
20:57Okay.
20:57Scotty, we're waiting
20:58any day now.
20:59Okay, we'll start with you
21:00since you're not sure.
21:01What aren't you sure about?
21:02I don't know.
21:03I don't understand
21:04what's the big deal.
21:06She puts her, you know,
21:08creamy crack on her baby hair.
21:10It's cool.
21:11I don't know
21:12what the big issue is.
21:13But natural Twitter,
21:15like in my head,
21:16natural Twitter,
21:17natural Instagram
21:18is really, really clicky to me.
21:20Yeah.
21:20And they're so mean.
21:22They're not mean,
21:23but Michelle,
21:23is it still,
21:24can you call yourself
21:25a naturalista
21:26if you're putting
21:27the creamy crack
21:27on your edges?
21:28I mean, clearly not,
21:30but this is the most
21:31interesting thing about her,
21:32so that's cool.
21:33I mean, I don't understand
21:34how you put your butt
21:35on national television
21:36every week fighting
21:38boobies, titties everywhere,
21:40but, you know,
21:41you can't have, like,
21:42some cute, like,
21:43little kinky curls.
21:44And call your, yeah.
21:45That's so true.
21:46I don't understand.
21:47Yeah.
21:47Sydney?
21:48I'm gonna say Slay
21:49because it's her hair,
21:50her choice,
21:51but I am worried
21:52that, like,
21:53would her hair not break off
21:55at the point
21:56where she, like,
21:57relaxed it?
21:57Also, no matter
21:58how gentle
21:59the relaxer is,
22:00you're still messing
22:01up your hair, so.
22:02True.
22:03That's the tip.
22:04Very interesting.
22:05Okay, now,
22:06our last story
22:07is dedicated
22:07to all things Tyrese,
22:09who has been very vocal
22:10about the custody battle
22:11he's currently in
22:13with his ex-wife
22:14over their 10-year-old daughter.
22:16Now, while his ex-wife
22:16claims Tyrese abused
22:17both her and their daughter,
22:19instead of just fighting
22:20the case in court
22:21and being cordial
22:22for the sake of their child,
22:23Tyrese resorted
22:24to what he knows best,
22:25doing the absolute most.
22:27So far,
22:28he's flown a banner
22:29over his daughter's school
22:30that read
22:30Daddy Loves You,
22:32checked himself
22:32into the hospital
22:33under the name
22:34Black Father,
22:35worn all black
22:36to a court hearing
22:37because he was,
22:38quote,
22:38attending a funeral.
22:40And lastly,
22:41dedicating Marvin Gaye's hit
22:42Let's Get It On
22:43to his own daughter.
22:45No.
22:45Yep, let's get it on.
22:47Michelle's already saying no,
22:48but panelists,
22:49are Tyrese's latest
22:50shenanigans
22:51a slay or a shade?
22:52All right,
22:52let's see what y'all
22:53are saying.
22:54Shade, shade, shade.
22:56Okay, Michelle,
22:57I feel like you just
22:58want to jump in.
22:59What are we getting on?
22:59Trial support?
22:59What is he doing?
23:01Relax.
23:02Perhaps turn to reach
23:03his head.
23:03He needs a Xanax
23:04or a glass of Pinot Grigio,
23:05a massage.
23:07Like, why is he so extra?
23:08Calm down.
23:09Black father?
23:11Really?
23:12Ugh.
23:12Scotty?
23:13I don't even understand.
23:15You're just...
23:15I can't even understand.
23:16Right?
23:17I don't understand Tyrese,
23:18period.
23:19Like, as far as, like,
23:21captions go and anything,
23:22but he's just...
23:23I don't...
23:25I can't even believe...
23:26Why would you...
23:27Why?
23:27Why let's get it on.
23:28He's clearly going
23:29through a tough time.
23:30Do you think perhaps
23:31this is his way
23:32of, like, reaching out
23:32to his daughter or...
23:34I mean, the daddy loves you,
23:35you know, Banner.
23:36Not bad.
23:37That's terrible.
23:38That's embarrassing.
23:39Daddy loves you.
23:40Is it her birthday?
23:41Yeah.
23:41Sidney, you're like,
23:42no.
23:43It's embarrassing.
23:44Tyrese has the ability
23:46to do the most
23:47and the very least
23:48at the same time.
23:49Yes!
23:49And this is one
23:50of those situations
23:51where it's just like...
23:52Speak on it, Bob!
23:53Stop!
23:53Yeah.
23:54Doing the most
23:55with the very least.
23:56Okay, now let's check in
23:57with Kayla,
23:57who's clearly part
23:58of the Rhythm Nation
24:00to see if social media
24:01has any words
24:02for Tyrese.
24:03Many words.
24:03Hey, Miss Jackson.
24:04Many words.
24:05All right,
24:05so some slayed,
24:06some shade.
24:07In support of Tyrese,
24:08Jeanette Williams says
24:09her father will do
24:09whatever it takes
24:10to show his love
24:11for his daughter.
24:11The love between
24:12the father and his
24:12children are priceless.
24:14Gwen Holland says
24:15by any means necessary.
24:16As long as there's
24:16no physical or sexual abuse,
24:18let the man see his daughter.
24:19But some people
24:20aren't here for it.
24:21Sheree Gould says
24:22he's losing his mind,
24:23should have checked
24:23into a psych ward.
24:25Shelia Coates says
24:26he's desperate,
24:26sad the kids are dragged
24:27through the court system
24:28because the parents
24:29are immature.
24:29Poor little girl.
24:30Ouch.
24:31Okay.
24:32Well, ladies,
24:33thank you so much
24:33for joining us
24:34and rocking your
24:35fabulous costumes.
24:37And now,
24:37if you're in need
24:38of a unique
24:39Halloween makeup look
24:40so you can hit
24:40a party or two tonight,
24:42we got you.
24:43Public stands for you.
24:44Fam, my name is Sarad
24:45and today I will be
24:46creating a Halloween look.
24:49I'm going to be
24:49turning myself
24:49into black girl magic.
24:51Of course,
24:51I already am
24:52black girl magic
24:53as we all are,
24:54but I want to just
24:55like amp it up
24:56and show kind of
24:57what the embodiment
24:58of black girl magic
24:59is to me
24:59when it comes to beauty
25:00and to makeup.
25:05First, I'll be using
25:11the Pat McGrath
25:11Mothership kit
25:12which just landed
25:13and then I will
25:15line my eyes
25:16and then I also
25:18will do it
25:19super close
25:21to the lash line.
25:25I'm going to add
25:26another little pop
25:27of color.
25:27I'm going to do
25:28a similar type
25:29of thing
25:30with pink.
25:30So I'm literally
25:31just going to trace
25:32this over.
25:34And of course,
25:35what is black girl magic
25:36without lots of glitter?
25:37So I'm just going
25:38to put a little
25:38on top of my eyes.
25:42And I'm going to
25:42actually use this
25:43as a,
25:44where you would use
25:44like a highlighter.
25:45I'm going to use
25:46just a little bit
25:46of my glitter gel.
25:50You just really
25:50have to rub it in
25:51otherwise you might
25:52look a little cuckoo.
25:54And then I always
25:55like to put a little
25:55highlighter on the
25:56bridge of your nose.
25:57So kind of where
25:58I've already put
25:59a little bit of glitter.
26:00I'm going to go back
26:01and just add a little
26:02bit of highlight.
26:05So Pam McGrath
26:06has this like
26:07pinky color.
26:08Dust on.
26:12So I'm just going
26:12to comb my lashes.
26:15Add a coat of mascara.
26:18All types of
26:19black girl magic.
26:23Give my hair
26:24a little bit
26:24of a zhuzh.
26:25I'm going to add
26:26a few more elements.
26:29So yeah,
26:30just grab a bunch
26:31of things
26:31that make you
26:32feel beautiful
26:32and voila,
26:33black girl magic
26:34personified.
26:35Just grab a bunch
26:36of things
26:37that make you feel
26:38beautiful and voila,
26:38black girl magic personified.
26:40You're watching Essence Now.
27:04I'm your host,
27:05Makon Lovu,
27:06and it's time to check in
27:07with you one more time
27:08on social.
27:09Kayla, you have been
27:10combing social media
27:11all so long,
27:12but I want to know
27:12what you think.
27:13What are you thinking
27:14about some of these topics?
27:15Very interesting.
27:16I mean, as far as Kim
27:17wearing the Aaliyah costume,
27:19I mean, it's just Halloween.
27:20I think we can just kind of
27:21take a chill pill.
27:22I think she slayed it,
27:23so I'm saying slayed for that one.
27:24What do you think?
27:25I just want to know
27:26if Kim knows one Aaliyah song.
27:27That's, I stick to that.
27:29If she knows one Aaliyah song,
27:30she could come to the cookout.
27:31We may never know.
27:32We may never know.
27:33Now, thanks to all our guests
