00:00Do you know where You Go Girl came from?
00:02No.
00:03Originally?
00:04Where?
00:04Whoopi Goldberg.
00:05What?
00:06Whoopi Goldberg.
00:09Sitting here in the Macro Lodge with no other than Tashina Arnold.
00:14Now first, I got to start with a congratulations because the neighborhood, right?
00:19Got renewed for season two.
00:21Praise the Lord.
00:22Hallelujah.
00:23Congratulations.
00:24Yes, we're very happy.
00:25On set, especially with Cedric the Entertainer.
00:28Like, is it all jokes behind the scenes?
00:29He's like, what is the environment like?
00:31We have a lot of fun behind the scenes, and things are carefully thought out.
00:35We're very thoughtful about what we put out there in terms of the content.
00:40But I'm very happy for Ced.
00:42I mean, for the fact that I've known him 20-something years, and this is the first time I've ever
00:46worked with him, so I'm very grateful.
00:49So, we're at Sundance.
00:50You are in a film, Last Black Man in San Francisco.
00:53Yes.
00:53That's getting a lot of buzz.
00:55We just interviewed Jonathan Majors, and he was talking about your character.
00:59That you're giving something in this character that we don't usually see from you.
01:03Yeah.
01:03Talk a little bit about that.
01:05Well, I play the auntie, Aunt Wanda, and just, I think that every Black man in America
01:11should see this film.
01:13There are so many textures to this film that I think people are going to be able to appreciate
01:18in years to come.
01:19I love the way they portrayed the Black man in this film.
01:24It shows so many sides of the Black man that you don't normally get to see.
01:29And aside from that, it talks about gentrification.
01:32It talks about homelessness.
01:35It hits on a lot of issues that we're dealing with today.
01:39Yeah.
01:39Beautiful film.
01:40Beautiful film.
01:41Yeah.
01:41And then your character, talk a little bit about that.
01:45Like, how does she differ from your...
01:47Well, my character, she made it out of San Francisco because, obviously, with gentrification,
01:55a lot of people can't afford to be in that big city anymore.
01:57And so she basically encourages her nephew, which is Jimmy Fallon.
02:03But overall, this film has so many moments that you're going to have to see it twice.
02:09Wow.
02:10Yeah.
02:10Yeah.
02:10It's going to be amazing.
02:11I can't wait to see it.
02:12It sounds really amazing.
02:12It's going to be a great film.
02:14So, and then Martin, like, that show has contributed so much to pop culture, Black pop culture.
02:20I don't know if people give it the credit of, like, all the catchphrases that we probably
02:25are still saying.
02:26A lot of catchphrases.
02:27Like, Autumn Martin?
02:28Like, what?
02:29If we left it like, you go, boy.
02:31You go, girl.
02:31Do you know where you go, you go, girl came from?
02:34No.
02:35Originally?
02:35Where?
02:36Whoopi Goldberg.
02:37What?
02:37Whoopi Goldberg said it first.
02:39I can't remember.
02:39Oh, and that movie.
02:41Was that in Ghost?
02:41Not Ghost.
02:42It was Sally Field.
02:44What?
02:44It was...
02:46I know it.
02:47It's on the tip of my tongue.
02:47Oh, God.
02:48My favorite movie.
02:49Whoopi Goldberg and Sally Field.
02:51Whoopi Goldberg.
02:51Whoopi Goldberg.
02:51Whoopi Goldberg.
02:52Whoopi Goldberg.
02:52Whoopi Goldberg.
02:53Soap dish.
02:53Soap dish.
02:54Whoopi had said it to her character, I think, or one of the characters in there.
02:58You know, she said, you go, girl.
03:00And that's where Tisha and A.J. Johnson picked it up, and then they did it in House Party.
03:06And then it went from House Party to Martin.
03:09There you have it.
03:09So you go, girl, as Whoopi Goldberg.
03:11Whoopi Goldberg.
03:12Whoopi Goldberg.
03:14Who knew?
03:14Who we love.
03:15I love me some Whoopi Goldberg.
03:17We love Whoopi.
03:18What else was there?
03:19It was Get to Steppin'.
03:20Get to Steppin'.
03:22Get to Steppin'.
03:22We're still saying Get to Steppin'.
03:24I came from Martin.
03:24Isn't that crazy?
03:25Talk to the hand.
03:26Talk to the hand.
03:27I remember seeing that on Ricky Lake, and all of a sudden everybody saying, talk to the hand.
03:31Yes, Lord.
03:32Came from Martin.
03:33And then you ain't got to go home, but you're going to get the hell out of here.
03:36Get to get the hell out of here.
03:37Jump in the trunk.
03:38So many different things.
03:40A lot of stuff.
03:41But, you know, we had fun, and it's a blessing to be a part of so many iconic, you know, pieces of work.
03:48And I tell people all the time, I don't just, I don't care about being a star.
03:52I want to leave a legacy of good work.
03:54I enjoy what I do.
03:55God has blessed me to wake up every day doing what I love doing.
03:58And to be at Sundance for the first time, I'm excited.
04:02Wow.
04:03Good things.
04:03And that just speaks to, that speaks so much to who you are, because I've had the pleasure of working with you behind the scenes.
04:09We had fun.
04:09Like, you just remain the most gracious and humble and kind and just, like, courteous person, no matter, like, everything that's under your belt, right?
04:20What is your secret to that?
04:21My motto is, it's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.
04:25We're all human.
04:26Yeah.
04:27And I just want to make sure that I, I, I be the best person that I can be.
04:33Yeah.
04:33That's all you can.
04:33And you made it.
04:34You got there.
04:35You're so amazing.
04:36So, thank you.
04:36So, I want to thank you so much for coming through.
04:39Thank you for having me.
04:39I know this wasn't a part of your schedule, but you were just like, I'm coming to Essence.
04:42Essence is here.
04:44Yes, of course.
04:44Thank you for taking the time out and coming out to us.
04:47Good luck with your film, Black Men in San Francisco.
04:50Can't wait to see it.
04:51Yes.
04:51Oh, you got to go see it.
04:52Got to see it.
04:53It's amazing.
04:53Absolutely.
04:54Thank you for having me.
