00:00Hi, I'm Julie Wilson, the Global Beauty Director at Essence, and I am so excited because I am here
00:08today with Sabrina Henry, who is a Principal Scientist at Aveeno, and she's going to break
00:14down all things skincare and tell us how to get skin happy. So, Principal Scientist, I mean,
00:22that's totally over my head. Please break down what that actually means. I'm in a lab. I wear
00:27a lab coat. I'm picking ingredients. I'm putting them together in a beaker. I'm mixing it up,
00:31but I'm creating cleansers. I'm creating moisturizers. You're like a mad and marvelous
00:36scientist. That's right. I love that. Tell me what it feels like to be someone who actually
00:42is really taking black women into consideration when you're formulating these products. I've been
00:47fortunate to be surrounded by some great black women who are strong, and I feel it's a responsibility
00:53for me to give that back to the community. So, let's talk a little bit about, like,
00:57what's important in the skincare realm when it comes to black women. I honestly say it begins
01:01with knowing your skin type first. Second, looking for products that have key ingredients, and one
01:07of which, which people don't really know, is oat. Right. And it's a great moisturizing ingredient.
01:13So, if you remember as a little girl, those oatmeal baths, you know, those itchy days,
01:17and mom just soaks you all in. I use them so much with my son. That ingredient by itself does
01:22such amazing things. And shea butter, which we know very well. Absolutely. Passed down from our
01:27mama, our aunties, our grandmother, right? My mom would not let me out of the house with
01:31ashy skin. She was like, what you're not going to do is bring shame upon this family and this
01:36household. Uh-huh. Your skin looks beautiful. Thanks, sis. Most important is protecting your skin.
01:42SPF. SPF all day. I mean, not enough people do it. We feel like we're protected by
01:47geramelanin, and that's not the truth. My dermatologist was like, wow, I see such a
01:50transformation. No more hyperpigmentation just by protecting my skin. And hyperpigmentation is
01:55like probably one of the number one skincare concerns in our community. But eczema is as
02:01well. What should our readers look for when trying to treat eczema? Oat is recognized as a skin
02:06protectant by the FDA. It's serving as a barrier to your skin, and Aveeno has an eczema therapy line
02:12that specifically does that. So, we have some really amazing products here. I want you to tell
02:17us about them. So, the lotion, it has a rich texture. It's formulated with shea butter and
02:22prebiotic oat. So, really to help us with any dry skin. And what about the body wash? The body wash
02:29has oat as well in there. It really helps to soothe dry skin, and it's scented with coconut. What does
02:36it mean to you to get skin happy? When you walk into a room, the first thing people see is you, of course,
02:41beautiful you. Yeah. But your skin. If I'm using products that make my skin feel good,
02:45I'll feel good. It brings about that confidence, and I think that's why it's such a point of pride
02:49for our community. It's such a glorious feeling knowing that my skin can glow as bright as my
02:54spirit. When we feel good in our skin, anything is possible. Couldn't agree more, Julie. Thank you, sis.
