00:00You know, obviously it's a lot of pressure, you guys are out here, your product is out here, you know, there's an expectation, you're elevating in your careers. How do you build your brand while still maintaining balance and having a personal life and making time for yourself as well? I know as creatives, that's something that we often struggle with, you know?
00:19For me, I'm still working on the balance. It's hard because if you're going to do it, it has to be your life and it's my entire life. It's my morning, my afternoon, my evening, it's everything. So I'm still working on balance. What I do is I go to yoga.
00:41I go to yoga and I try to take trips to relax, but I don't mind being just, you know, fully immersed in it. I don't mind it.
00:56It's your passion. Yeah, I feel like I have to be that way, otherwise I can't operate any other way. I have to be all in.
01:07How about you, P? How do you find out?
01:11I don't. None of us do.
01:14I don't know if there's a such thing as finding balance. Like, you just have to do what you have to do, but you also, when you have to take a break, you have to take a break.
01:22And I got to do that, you know, for the first time where I really was like, okay, let me just take a break.
01:28Because it got to the point where I couldn't perform. Like, I couldn't say, okay. Like, I couldn't, like, ideas, things weren't coming. There was like a blockage.
01:38So, your body kind of balances you and tells you, like, okay. Or your mind, rather. I don't think anyone actually discovers what that is because if something comes up, then, yeah, if I was away, but if I had to come back, I had to come back.
01:52Because you have to do it. You have to do it. It is your whole life.
01:54So, for me, you know, I have a son. And it's, I also had a baby, too, which was kind of like my first baby. And that's something I'm even like, how to be a mom? How to run a business? Am I giving, you know?
02:07And I'm just like, well, you're human. So, you know, it's, it's, it's, you just kind of have to roll with the punches. Take it as it, as it comes.
02:17But I'm very much into prayer. And I think that's what sets my warnings off. That's what gives me guidance. And that's what I do, like, all day.
02:27Like, you know what? If I can't call up Itasia or Jazzy or one of them and they can't give me the answer, I'm just going to say, God, they didn't give me the right answer.
02:35Like, talk, talk to me. Tell me what to do, you know?
02:38So, I pray a lot. That's why I say keep speeches grounded. I always try to remember that there was a time, and I put this on Instagram, there was a time that I prayed for exactly what's happening right now.
02:54So, I try to remember that time, like, okay, this is what you wanted. So, now, and now it's happening. So, show up, you know?
03:02So, let's talk about inspiration. What inspires you? What, what, you know, as you're creating, what inspires your designs?
03:14For me, because I spent so much time in the music, dance industry, a lot of, and I grew up in the 80s.
03:24So, I would say, like, music videos, 80s fashion is a really big inspiration for me. Like, I find myself using a lot of clutter and chunkiness and bold, like, things that are bold and statement-y.
03:43So, I would say, and it took me a minute to figure out where that came from for me, but I am 100% sure that it comes from the music, music, and, yeah, yeah.
03:59Yeah, I mean, you use a lot of artful, kind of, like, feminine details and bolds and things like that.
04:05There's a bit of a dance inspiration that comes in a lot of your pieces as well.
04:10I'm like, okay.
04:11Oh, the ballet.
04:14She's like, okay.
04:17What about you, Phi? What inspires you?
04:20I am very much inspired by my Caribbean roots, where I'm from, Grenada, the effortlessness of the people on the island, the vibe, the color, the prince.
04:31Just seeing something that evokes emotion.
04:34It can be a place.
04:35It can be a woman, a man.
04:37Just, that's what inspires me.
04:39And it can come literally from everywhere.
04:42I can see architecture.
04:43I can see furniture.
04:45Someone can do really great interior designing and place the colors a certain way.
04:49I'll be able to make a dress from that or create a print from that.
04:53But the whole aesthetic that everyone talks about really comes from this beautiful little island that's just super effortless.
05:02Like, it's just beautiful on its own.
05:04And I use that when I make something up.
05:07If someone walks in the room.
05:08I don't want it to be, with it being loud.
05:13But it's just like, it's just, you don't know why it's demanding your attention.
05:17You know what, it kind of works because I just want to look at this young lady right here.
05:21With the cubits.
05:22She's just there and it's just like, I just want to look at her, you know.
05:26And I try to do that.
05:29And I try to continuously remember that that's what I'm inspired by.
05:34Because, like I said, that performance anxiety.
05:37You're seeing so much stuff.
05:38And you're like, oh, should I be doing these intricate things?
05:41And then you have to tell yourself, like, stick to what you do.
05:44Stick to what you know.
05:44And what you're good at.
05:45And what the people love you for.
05:47And of course, you can elevate.
05:48But don't lose sight of what made you new.
05:52And I'm telling you guys, but I'm kind of telling myself too.
05:55So one last question.
05:57And then we're going to open the door to the audience.
06:01Can you, what do you wish you knew when you started out?
06:04Was there like a valuable life lesson that you learned along the way?
06:08That you wish you could go back and tell yourself that you know now?
06:12Fail sooner as much as possible.
06:17It is a part of the process.
06:19If you're not going to get it right.
06:21And if I knew the only way to get it right is to get it wrong 120 times.
06:27You know?
06:29I would have just been a little bit more easygoing.
06:31And I would have done a lot more things.
06:33And I would have taken a lot more chances.
06:34Because it's a part of the process.
06:36It's so hard on you.
06:37Yeah, exactly.
06:38So fail as much as you can as often as you can.
06:41Because that is, there's no way around it.
06:44Like no one gets to success or winning without failing.
06:49You know?
06:49And no one grows from winning.
06:51You don't grow.
06:52When you're winning, you're just like, you have to tell yourself.
06:55Don't get too comfortable.
06:56Challenge yourself.
06:57You know?
06:58Challenge yourself.
06:59So fail as often as you can.
07:02I love that.
07:03How about you?
07:04I would have to agree that everything doesn't have to be so perfect.
07:08That's what I wish I, you know, I knew.
07:12Because you put so much emphasis on everything.
07:15But just relax and let it breathe.
07:18And yes, the emphasis.
07:19But it's not always going to be perfect.
07:21So I'm still trying to teach myself that and remember that.
07:27And just be more relaxed about things.
07:32So don't be hard on yourselves.
07:34It's okay to fail.
07:36But just push past it.
07:37Learn the lesson now.
