ESSENCE Live host Dana Blair & Entertainment Director Cori Murray discuss all the best moments from this years Black Girls Rock Event.
Transcript
00:00I want to start off with talking about Black Girls Rock.
00:05The event was jam-packed with memorable moments,
00:07standout performances, and some tear-jerking speeches.
00:10What were your top three moments from the night?
00:12Okay. First of all, Sheila E. opening.
00:15Yes.
00:16I will fully disclose on my 80s baby, so glamorous life was my life.
00:20And so she was up there just jamming.
00:22She was serving it.
00:23And I called my daughter. I was like, what, Sheila E.?
00:25And then, because you know what I realized?
00:26I mean, I love the singers all day long.
00:27Right.
00:28She's not a singer-songwriter, but she's a singer-songwriter and a musician.
00:31She comes from this huge family, and she was feeling it.
00:33I mean, just like Beyonce, she was like, I am feeling myself.
00:36I'm sorry, excuse me, Nicki Minaj.
00:38She was feeling herself, and I loved it.
00:40The energy, and I loved everyone jumping up for her.
00:42What about number two?
00:43My number two favorite was Nadia Lopez's speech,
00:47because I know a lot of people are talking about Michelle Obama's,
00:51which I love, but Nadia Lopez, it was something very spiritual about her speech,
00:54because I love the fact that she was like, you know,
00:56you gave me the gift to empower children.
00:58What are you doing with you, the gifts that God has given you?
01:00And that really struck a chord with me.
01:02And also, I'm a mother of a young daughter, and she's going to go into,
01:06you know, public schools, and I love the fact that here's this woman
01:09who really wanted to uplift these kids in Brownfield, New York.
01:12So my heart went out to her. I really connected.
01:14Especially since right now we're at a time where we're seeing so many young women,
01:19especially, and of course some young men fighting,
01:22and then it's going all over social media,
01:24and these are becoming some of the most viral videos out there.
01:27Most recently the fight that took place in Brooklyn at the McDonald's
01:30where the young lady was jumped.
01:31Crazy, yes.
01:32You know, and that's the type of thing that unfortunately is being glorified.
01:34Yes.
01:35So it's a nice contrast.
01:37So I really enjoyed that moment as well.
01:38No, it was beautiful.
01:39And all the kids spoke so highly.
01:41Like you could, you can sense the pride they have just being in school
01:44and being under Ms. Lopez's leadership, and it was very moving.
01:47And number three?
01:48I've got to say, I know the, I love all the honorees,
01:52but those moments they did, the mad girl moments, those little people,
01:55I was just like, what was I doing at 13?
01:57Was I just chilling?
01:58I'm trying to figure out my life.
01:59I'm still trying to figure out my life at 33.
02:01Okay.
02:02You know what I'm saying?
02:03Like entrepreneurs, a coder, you know, a book illustrator, an author.
02:08I mean, I was so inspired by those young women, and I wish they could,
02:12I love the way they incorporated in the show, but it's almost like,
02:14I wish they had a bigger moment.
02:15A bigger moment.
02:16I love, I love the mad girl moment.
02:17Because there's a little girl watching somewhere.
02:19Yes.
02:20I don't know, the way I used to watch in Alexandria, Louisiana,
02:22or some town somewhere that's seeing themselves.
02:24Yes.
02:25And saying, wait, there are people my age who are doing this,
02:27and they might be getting picked on at school for doing this type of thing,
02:30or having those interests, but being able to identify and know that they're not alone,
02:33and that there are others out there.
02:34I think that it's just truly an inspirational moment.
02:37No, I love that.
02:38I even especially love the girl, she showed her braces,
02:40and tried to make those girls look grown, they showed them as their true selves.
02:43Yes, they were age-appropriate.
02:44Yes.
02:45And I loved it, every moment of it.
02:46Yes.
02:47Yes.
02:48Mm.
02:49I am a good one.
02:50Yes.
02:51You never know, I'm a good one.
02:52I don't know that.
02:53Yes.
02:54Yes.
02:55Yes.
02:57Yes.
02:58Yes.
02:59Yes.
03:00Yes.
03:01Yes.
03:03You.
03:05Yes.
03:06Yes.
03:08Yes.
03:09Yes.
03:10Yes.
03:11Yes.
