Transcript
00:00Welcome, Jesse. We are so excited to have you here at Essence Fest.
00:10It's my first time. It's my first time being here.
00:12Yeah, that's exciting.
00:13It's so exciting.
00:14It's mayhem. I cannot believe this. I didn't know what to expect.
00:18Now, since this is your first Essence Fest, is there anything you're most excited about seeing?
00:22You know what sucks is that I was most excited about seeing Charlie Wilson, and then I missed it.
00:28I didn't get to see it. I didn't get to see him, and I was so waiting to see Charlie Wilson.
00:33But I'm looking forward to it. I'm going to see Seven tonight at the lounge.
00:39It's so funny. Seven is playing at 7 o'clock.
00:42And also, I really want to see Missy Elliott.
00:47And then I'm mad because I have something else to do, so I won't get to see Usher, the king.
00:51Oh, wow.
00:52I'll get to see Missy.
00:53Yeah, now that's huge.
00:54Come on, man.
00:55Come on, Jesus.
00:56We perform that often, so this is like a big deal.
00:59But you know what? She came out for Essence because that's what Essence Fest does.
01:02You bring out the big boys and the big girls. That's what's up.
01:06So, you know, here at Essence, we're all about uplifting black women, empowering them and inspiring them.
01:11So, is there one thing that you feel like black women don't hear enough? And what would that love note to them be?
01:18You're so beautiful.
01:20No, I mean, black women. Black women. My lord. Mother of the earth.
01:25You know, I feel like a lot of times black women don't get told how important and how very, very sincere we as black men are about and should be so grateful to black women.
01:42You're beautiful. You know what I'm saying? And I don't know if black women, no, black women don't hear that enough.
01:48They don't hear that enough in media. They don't hear that enough from us, you know, quite honestly.
01:54And so, you know, I say it. I say it all the time.
01:57We love that you say it. So, you know, it's summertime. Everyone's here to have a good time, you know, enjoy music, enjoy the weather.
02:05Here to get in trouble.
02:06Yes. Yes.
02:07Here to be hot and sticky. It's a mess.
02:10So, you know, we know you're a music lover. Is there any song that's your ratchet summer anthem right now? I can tell you mine.
02:19Dang.
02:20I don't know if that's ratchet though. Some people clown me because I was so hard on, but it's not really a summer song because it was already out.
02:31I was so hard on truffle butter. I like a little ratchet music sometimes. Ain't nothing wrong with a little ratchet music.
02:37That's right.
02:38We can be intelligent. We can be classy with a little bit of ratchetism.
02:41We can be sophista ratchet.
02:43Exactly. We can be bougietto. Ain't nothing wrong with that. Ain't nothing wrong with it. Ain't nothing wrong with it.
02:48Now, this is actually the 21st year of Essence Fest, so we are officially legal.
02:53Legal.
02:54So tell me, how did you celebrate your 21st birthday?
02:57I think that I was in Europe. I was a struggling singer singing on the street corners and writing songs in Europe.
03:06Wow.
03:07And I was living in Zurich, Switzerland at the time, and my mom came and surprised me.
03:14That might have been my 20th birthday. You know, I'm so old now. I don't remember these things.
03:19It was either that or we had like an old-school 90s party, and I was just like the whole time.
03:26I love it.
03:27But it was one of those, and I cannot remember which one it was. I'm going to have to look back and think.
03:31But it was one of those. But my 21st birthday was great. That I do remember.
03:36Okay.
03:37Maybe I don't remember because I was too drunk.
03:38Right. That's how you know it was good.
03:41Well, thank you, Jessie, so much for joining us.
