00:10a black woman in Hollywood this isn't your first time attending is it this is my first time they
00:14invited me to perform today and I'm so excited I'm like one of the few token males here celebrating
00:20all these wonderful women and we're happy to be here to perform glory of course from Selma which
00:24was directed by an incredibly talented black woman named Ava DuVernay and we're excited to
00:30celebrate all these ladies today and how do you feel seeing the way the industry in the world has
00:34responded to glory oh it's been incredible and we we didn't know what we were getting into when we
00:39wrote the song we just were trying to write a great song for the film something to close it properly
00:43but as soon as it came out people were just really responding to it and we got all these award
00:49nominations and we're very grateful now I know you do these award shows all the time and and you're
00:54in the a-list circles but is there anyone you're interested in meeting or seeing tonight I saw
00:57some of the cast from how to get away with murder I was like a little excited because I started watching

01:17good time well we are celebrating as you may or may not know 45 years of essence and we've been
01:22talking about inspiration what keeps you fueled in your craft what inspired you to go on this
01:29musical journey and say you know what I'm gonna go for it a lot of it was musicians that I looked
01:33up to it started with my grandmother who played at my church when I was growing up and taught me how
01:39to play gospel music I grew up listening to Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye and Aretha Franklin and all
01:46these people inspired me and part of my excitement to be a performer was seeing great performers and wanting
01:51to be like them and so they set an example and and blazed the trail for us and now we're just trying
01:57to live up to that awesome thank you so very much for taking the time I know they're about to usher
