00:00Hi, you're watching Beauty How To on Essence.com. I'm Nicole Melton, your beauty editor, and
00:15today I'm going to be sharing with you how I do my fun and easy natural hair top knot.
00:20So I'm starting with about a five day old twist out, so my hair is a little bit stretched
00:25already. And the first thing I'm going to do is apply a detangler around the edges of
00:30my hair. So I'm using a leave in conditioner and I'm just going to thread this around my
00:36edges. I'm taking a paddle brush and I'm going to brush my hair toward the center. As I'm
00:48brushing, I'm kind of pulling my hair up to straighten it out a little bit more. Once
00:54I've got it all brushed up, I'm using a tie and I'm going to go around the back of my
01:01nape and just grab it and gently pull it up. Just kind of feel where it's going. Wrap it
01:20around a second time and tie in the front. I only went back about probably two inches
01:27in the front there. Tie it in a little knot. And you can use any kind of string for this.
01:34These are actually pantyhose that I just cut a strip out of because it's nice and stretchy.
01:42So you can use a shoe string. Some people use a shoe string. Now to start the top knot, I'm
01:48going to section my hair in about eight different twists, starting with the center. So I pull
02:01this down in the front and around the sides and the back. And I have a piece in the middle.
02:11I have a wide tooth comb. I'm just going to comb it out a little bit to really stretch that hair.
02:21And I'm going to create a two strand twist. Only on the ends. So I'm not going all the way down.
02:28I'm starting up at the top tee top of that middle piece. That's your first section. And then I just
02:38kind of let it hang out in the middle. Like that. And now I'm going to take a section of the outer part.
02:53And again, apply a little bit of my leave in conditioner to that part. And I'm going to create a very loose twist. Very loose.
03:12Take a bobby pin. And I wrap the twist around the bobby pin. And I pin this into this. Like that. And go on to the next section. And the amount of sections that you need will depend on the thickness of your hair.
03:39So that's pretty much it. But before I finish, I actually remove the hair tie. And I re-tie it to get rid of any hairs that are left over. And before I do that, I put a little bit of mousse.
04:07around the edges. Smooth them down a little bit. And one last time. Take your paddle brush. Brush up anything you see. Take my string. Go back around the back.
04:33Round the edges. And just pull it into place. Kind of like that.
04:40Kind of like that.
