00:00Hey, Essence. Have you ever wondered how to maintain the health of your baby's hair and build a really good hair regimen?
00:11Well, today we have the fabulous Christina Brown, founder of Baby Brown Sugar and Love Brown Sugar,
00:17and we have her beautiful seven-month daughter. Hey, Kayden. She's so excited to be here, and we're so excited to have you.
00:27So, Christina, tell us a little bit about her hair regimen.
00:30When it comes to maintaining her hair, I just try to make sure that I'm using natural ingredients and products that I know are going to be good for her hair and just good overall for her as a baby.
00:41So, everything that I use on her is water-based. I use a lot of shea butter, a lot of coconut oil, just natural products.
00:49Okay.
00:50What's also important for me is making sure that her hair is moisturized on a regular basis, so I wash her hair once a week.
00:56Okay.
00:57You know, I make sure that it's detangled, and I use a mixture of shea butter and coconut oil after her hair is finished washing to seal in the moisture.
01:07And as far as styling is concerned, I try and braid her hair once a week as well.
01:13Okay. And now, is that like a corn roll, or is that like individual braids?
01:17It's normally individual braids.
01:18Okay.
01:19I find that individual braids are just easier for me to put in and take out.
01:23Okay.
01:24And it's also less tension on her hair, so she'll kind of sit still while I do it.
01:28Nice.
01:29Nice.
01:30Because she's a busybody.
01:31Right.
01:32So, how did you maintain the soft spot on the crown of her head?
01:38So, like I mentioned before, I just try and make sure not to do any styles that have put too much tension on her hair.
01:46And honestly, I hadn't started styling her hair until she got a little bit older and her hair had grown out some.
01:52So, I think for new moms, moms that have really young babies, you really don't want to do much to your baby's hair for the first few months.
01:59Okay.
02:00Because everything is very tender and you just want to make sure that you're not doing anything that can hurt the baby.
02:05Sure.
02:06So, that's why I do the individual braids.
02:08I make sure that they're loose.
02:09And what do you do when she's moving around and you're trying to braid it?
02:11Well, if she's moving around, I just let her be.
02:14She's just not going to have her hair braided that way.
02:17Okay.
02:18Okay.
02:19So, I have to make sure that she's in a good mood.
02:20I try to put the TV on or, you know, have her play with one of her favorite toys.
02:23Distract her.
02:24Exactly.
02:25To make sure that she, you know, is entertained while I'm doing it.
02:29Now, do you think you'll maintain this regimen for the next six months of her life?
02:32Or do you think you'll change it again within the year?
02:34What are your plans?
02:35I think I can definitely maintain it as long as it's kind of in this kind of short, curly fro moment.
02:40Okay.
02:41Once it gets really long and it, you know, it starts to grow a lot, I'll probably have to
02:45switch it up, maybe do more protective styles.
02:47But I definitely want to make sure that the products I'm using in her hair throughout her
02:52childhood have natural ingredients and that are just good for her.
02:55Because I try to do the same thing for my own hair regimen.
02:58Sure.
02:59Just keep it natural.
03:00Okay.
03:01Well, thank you so much.
03:04Say thank you.
03:11Thank you very much.
03:14Thank you very much.
