Viola Davis on the latest cover of Essence Magazine.
Transcript
00:00Every time I read and look at Essence Magazine, for me, it represents everything that's wonderful
00:12about us as black people and black women.
00:17Our beauty, our inner, outer beauty, our talent, it's a celebration of who we are as women.
00:25So for me, I feel like that I've arrived at a certain point in my career, in my life,
00:33where I have become a symbol of something for African American women that possibly inspires them.
00:44And that makes me feel good because I know that I lived on inspiration at a time when
00:49there was nothing around me to hold on to, to kind of ground my dreams in reality.
00:56I survived on that.
00:58Because the American story for me is rooted in forgiveness, it's rooted in hope, it's rooted in dreams.
01:05Dreams of people who have nothing.
01:08And the hope that their dreams could come true and fighting obstacles in order to achieve them.
01:17And if anyone knows that, it's us.
01:19I mean, that's just who we are.
01:21And I think that it's time for us not to just be 12.5% of the population and just a part of the 100% population.
01:33That's why it's important.
01:34We're people.
01:35Look for me in the August issue of Essence magazine.
01:38This is Viola Davis and you're watching Essence TV.
