00:00Before I was really into R&B, I never really thought I would be a singer.
00:13I liked R&B and I sang. I took it as a hobby, something I did in the shower, something I did in the car.
00:21I'm 25 years old, so I was basically raised off hip-hop.
00:25My producer and mentor Troy Taylor would give me these CDs when I started to pursue music and really hone in on the craft.
00:33He would give me CDs with all these artists on it without names or lists of the songs.
00:39I'd listen to Prince for my falsetto or Earth, Wind & Fire for harmonies.
00:46I'd listen to Michael Jackson for different tones.
00:50I would say I've been influenced by many.
00:52I recently went on tour with Jay-Z, who was my favorite rapper.
00:57To see the way his showmanship has developed from the beginning of his career is amazing to see.
01:05A live performance by Trey Songz?
01:07Well, one, at EMF, I can't say what that's going to be yet because I've never had the chance to grace that stage.
01:14I'm thrilled by the chance to do so, first of all.
01:20A performance is, for me, all about energy and giving my fans another reason to love the brand, to love the artist, to love the song.
01:30To perform in New Orleans, of course, is amazing because of what you said, the musical history.
01:35And, you know, they get down.
01:37So, anytime you perform in New Orleans, it's an amazing crowd.
01:40But you've got New Orleans people, you've got people.
01:42It's the biggest, I think, family reunion ever.
01:46You know, so to be a part of that, it's going to give me, I'm going to go crazy up there in front of that many people.
01:52Well, currently, I'm working on my new album.
01:56Still doing shows.
01:58We're planning a tour for August.
02:00I'm going overseas within the next couple weeks to do a tour of Europe.
02:05What else?
02:06I'm shooting a documentary.
02:08Well, a docu-series, rather.
02:10Airing on BET is a ten-part series.
02:14You'll see me on tour.
02:16You'll see me with my family.
02:18You'll see me handling business.
02:20You'll see a lot of sides of me that can't be shown through, you know, 30-minute interviews or a four-page article.
02:26You know, or even follow me on Twitter.
02:28You'll get more insight into my life.
02:31And I'm excited about that.
02:33I think it's definitely important to give a piece of yourself because that's what this is.
02:39That's what entertainment is.
02:41Whether you want to go and sing and go home and be shut away from the world, you could be that artist.
02:47But I want to devote myself fully to this.
02:50I'm young.
02:51This is the time of my life where I can do that.
02:53It's a lot to ask for.
02:56And it's a lot to give.
02:58But I want people to understand me.
03:01I want people to understand the music I make and understand why I do things the way I do.
03:06Hi, I'm Trey Sons and I'll be performing at the 2010 Essence Music Festival.
03:11.
