00:00Hi Essence family, this is Yolanda Sanguini, entertainment editor at Essence.com. Welcome
00:09to Coffee Talk, your weekly dose of what's hot on Essence.com. This week we hung out with the
00:15legendary supermodel Beverly Johnson, who talked to us about Beverly's Full House, her new reality
00:19show on the Oprah Winfrey Network, and also how she juggles being a mom, a grandmother,
00:25and a beauty entrepreneur. Well the show is about mother and daughter relationships. My daughter
00:30and my new son-in-law and my new grandbaby, Ava, son-in-law, come and they come to live with
00:39me in my home in Palm Springs. And it's a docudrama where they follow me around so you also get
00:47to see me building my companies. I've known Oprah for many years, and I was doing Oprah's
00:55show, and it was the last year, and I told her that I had some shows I wanted to pitch to
01:00her. She said, oh, you promise you're going to come in and pitch me this show? I said,
01:02I promise. And I pitched her a number of shows, and I slid the reality show right at the end,
01:09and I was telling her some funny things about Anonza and her husband, a fiancé at the time,
01:14moving in with me, and my daughter asked me for a contract. And I was like, a contract
01:19to live with me, you know? And she said, yeah, because you know how you are a mom, and I don't
01:26want you, you know, telling me what time to come home. I said, Anonza, you're an adult now.
01:31I'm not going to tell you what time to come home, but tell me what time I should call the
01:35police if you're not there. 24 hours, 48 hours. So we have that kind of relationship, and they
01:41said, that's the show we wanted. I think the difference between Beverly's Full House,
01:46we like to call it a constructive reality show, because we're making the show for a reason.
01:53And the reason is to gain the skills that one needs to create stronger bonds, and that's
01:59something that other people can use in their lives. Remember, I've only seen one episode,
02:04so I do not know what the rest looks like. But I can tell you this, we were ourselves.
02:11Good, bad, and indifferent, we were ourselves. And I think that a mother and daughter relationship
02:17is a very complicated relationship anyways. I learned a lot about myself. I realized that
02:23I don't know myself at all. Well, I'm in the beauty business, and I love beauty, and I've
02:29stayed very connected, you know, with hair, and, you know, my hair business. And now, as
02:35a businesswoman, like, instead of licensing my name, I decided to own the box my face is
02:45on, as opposed to licensing my name out. And also, I wanted to see my hair and hair care line
02:54in black beauty supply stores. And before, when I had the licensing deal for 14 years,
02:59that couldn't be done. And that wasn't done. I think that, you know, I have purpose in my
03:05life, and I have a lot of joy in my life. And I really think that it has a lot to do with,
03:11you know, how you look and how you feel.
