Marsai Martin at Essence Festival 2019!
Transcript
00:00So, is this your first Essence?
00:02It is, actually.
00:04And it's really hype.
00:05I'm really excited, yeah.
00:07How is New Orleans treating you?
00:09Pretty good.
00:10You know, I'm from Dallas, Texas, so it's actually, like, not too far from here.
00:14So, yeah, it's, like, pretty comfortable, and everyone's so sweet.
00:17Yeah.
00:18So, we've seen you grow up on the show Black-ish.
00:20How has being on the set helped shape your sense of style?
00:24Oh, I mean, in so many ways.
00:27I feel like all of us have different styles.
00:31Like, of course, with Tracy and Yara and just everyone else, they define themselves, and they're authentic to themselves.
00:42So, I really, you know, took that over, and actually, what they have taught me has really influenced, like, what I do for a living, which is actually pretty cool.
00:53So, yeah, it influenced me in a lot of ways.
00:56So, do they give you any tips?
00:58Do they give me any tips?
01:00You know, I feel like I always say advice always comes from, like, them not necessarily talking to me about it, but more of how they present themselves as a person.
01:11So, I feel like Tracy has taught me just how beauty doesn't, like, define who you are, like, on the outside.
01:21It defines who you are on the inside.
01:23So, I always keep that, like, everywhere I go.
01:26You're always looking so stunning on the red carpet.
01:29How engaged are you in picking out your own outfits?
01:32I'm actually pretty, you know, I think I do pretty good.
01:37I actually have a stylist, so I can't look this good doing it by myself, you know?
01:43So, yeah, I actually just tell Jason Renbert.
01:47Shout out to Jason.
01:48He's pretty bomb.
01:48Hi, Miles.
01:49What's good?
01:50Help me.
01:51Hey, I need a hug.
01:56Hi.
01:57Y'all know him for Black is True, right?
01:59Hey!
02:01Okay.
02:03All right.
02:03Sorry.
02:04I had to do that real quick.
02:06But, yeah, I feel like the more I grow as a person, I feel like it just develops in any way.
02:13And I don't have, like, a certain style either.
02:16I just, like, go with anything that I'm feeling depending on my mood.
02:20So, what is some of your beauty favorites?
02:25What are, like, three things you absolutely have to have when it comes to beauty?
02:30Let's see.
02:32I mean, anything Fenty.
02:34Because, I mean, come on.
02:35We like the Fenty, right?
02:36Riri.
02:37It's so great.
02:39It's like Rihanna.
02:40So, come on.
02:42Let's see.
02:43What else?
02:44Probably, like, Chapstick.
02:47You know, I bring Chapstick everywhere, you know?
02:49And I feel like with or without makeup, that's, like, perfect.
02:51The lips always got to be popping.
02:53Yeah, of course.
02:54And, I don't know, just positive energy, a good attitude, you know?
02:59And I think that's what shows you true beauty.
03:01So, when you're not living this busy Hollywood life, what are you like on a day off?
03:05What are you wearing?
03:06Are you still glammed up or glammed down?
03:11No.
03:11I am definitely not.
03:13I feel like any time I go to my office or, like, just working in general, and even in meetings.
03:19Because I feel like it kind of turned into, like, me going in with a blazer and stuff, kind of, like, showing myself off.
03:26Like, hey, you know, what's good?
03:27Because I felt like I had to actually, like, show myself in that way.
03:30But then, the more I got into those meetings, I realized all they need to see is my face.
03:37So, I'm like, oh, okay.
03:38I'll just wear some sweats then.
03:40Like, wear something Nike or whatever.
03:41So, it's very comfortable.
03:44Sweats, pretty chill, you know?
03:46Ripped jeans.
03:47I actually, like, don't like tight jeans.
03:49The ones that are, like...
03:50Something comfy.
03:51Yeah.
03:52I'm like, who likes that?
03:53That's not okay.
03:54It's...
03:55No, I don't like jeans.
03:56That's one thing about me.
03:57So, I always wear, like, something ripped jeans or, like, sweats or even, like, some cool tennis shoes.
04:02So, let's talk about the movie Little.
04:04Yeah.
04:05So, we saw a bad two-piece suit.
04:08I think it was pink in the movie.
04:11Yeah.
04:12How engaged were you in on the set picking out your own outfits for that?
04:18Actually, I wouldn't say at all, you know?
04:21Because I feel like when I thought about Jordan, I was just, like, she just got to look like a rich person.
04:28I mean, you can...
04:29It's pretty easy to act, like, you know, show off, like, you know, designer clothes and stuff.
04:35So, shout out to Provy, which is one of our stylists on Little.
04:40She literally was, like, everything Gucci, Prada, Fendi, like, all of it, you know?
04:46So, when I had my first fitting for Little, I was like, oh, yes, to all of this.
04:51I'm like, this is, like, literally perfect because this is literally Jordan, so.
04:55So, you made history as the youngest executive producer in Hollywood.
05:00How does that make you feel?
05:01Clap it up for that, y'all.
05:03Come on.
05:06Oh, my gosh.
05:07Does it put any pressure on you?
05:09Kind of, sort of, but not really.
05:15Does that make sense?
05:16Because I feel like I don't even really care about the title as much because I am here for a different reason.
05:23I'm here to actually really, like, create things that I love to do and just show my authentic self.
05:29Because showing my authentic self can show other young black girls or anyone else that they can just be whoever they want and be comfortable in their skin.
05:38And they can play any character that they want to be.
05:41So, really, it's a blessing to have it.
05:44But just to actually do it and have it as my passion and something that I love to do is actually pretty cool.
05:52And I kind of don't feel pressure with it at all because I'm still just me at the end of the day.
05:56So, do you consider yourself a role model?
06:01Do I consider myself a role model?
06:04Sometimes.
06:05I think so.
06:06Yeah.
06:07I feel like, I think that's what I'm trying to do.
06:11I feel like I want to show myself in the best and positive way as possible because of the audience that I have.
06:19So, yeah, I try to be as big as a role model as I can be.
06:23What do you feel about foundation?
06:25Because it seems like you're pretty grounded.
06:27Yeah, of course.
06:29My support team is so bomb.
06:31And shout out to my parents.
06:34They're backstage.
06:35Grubbing on some food.
06:37Oh, never mind.
06:38Y'all watching.
06:39Hey.
06:39And then my manager around there that just sat down and is chilling.
06:45Yeah, I'm calling you out.
06:46But, yeah, just having a great support system really defines actually who you are, too.
06:53And, you know, they won't let you fall, you know.
06:57So, having a good foundation really, like, helps you out.
07:01And the genes that you have.
07:02You know, like, my grandparents, everyone else, like, family that I haven't seen in a long time that I feel like I'm so connected to still actually helps me out with that.
07:11And they always text me, like, girl, you doing good?
07:13Or, girl, that outfit wasn't good.
07:16Ask your stylist to change it.
07:18You know, like, those type of things.
07:19They always help me out with that.
07:20And they give the greatest advice.
07:23So, what keeps you so balanced between, you know, because social media can be a lot.
07:28Yeah.
07:28Do you feel any pressure to grow up so fast at a young age?
07:32No, no, no, not at all.
07:34I feel like I am in the exact place that I am and where I should be because I feel like there's a whole life ahead of me.
07:43I don't have to act 28 when I'm not going to go back to 14 later on.
07:47So, I feel like just sticking to what you know, do school, any of that, and just stick to your true grounds until you get to that age, I'm just sticking to where I am, you know.
07:59So, how are you balancing that school, busy Hollywood life?
08:04Is it stressful?
08:07Let me just say I'm glad it's summer because as soon as school hits, it hits differently.
08:14Like, oh, my gosh, it's ridiculous.
08:17So, but no, school is actually pretty good when I balance it between the two.
08:24I feel like I'm on, like, a great break right now so I don't have to worry about it as much anymore.
08:29But as soon as it hits, I just have to, like, just balance it.
08:32It's like juggling, you know.
08:33So, I haven't juggled it in a while, but when I do, I'm going to be prepared.
08:37So, so many young black people, young black girls still don't see themselves represented on Hollywood and film, music, whatever it may be, in entertainment.
08:48How do you feel about that?
08:50For someone who still feel like, you know, is there a lot more work to do when it comes to representation?
08:54Um, yeah, definitely.
08:57I feel like it has to change.
08:59And we are starting to do that.
09:02And, of course, there is such a positive team around me to where we will make sure everyone is represented in the best way possible.
09:12And I've been in that situation before.
09:14When I see young black girls, it's like they're the last ones, the first ones to die in Act 1.
09:20Or, like, they're the sassy one that, you know, they don't care about anybody, you know.
09:25Or, like, really stereotyping how we are.
09:27Or, like, snatching weaves or throwing water on people.
09:30That's how, like, people define us usually.
09:33So, just to change the narrative a little bit and actually see ourselves in places that we hope to dream when we are older or, like, we can do right now.
09:42So, yeah, we can definitely change the narrative.
09:45And we are starting.
09:46I mean, my friend Hallie is Ariel.
09:49I mean, we are.
09:51We're making it up there.
09:53Like, come on.
09:54This is a great time for us.
09:56So, what are your goals?
09:58What's up next for you?
09:59What is up next?
10:01Oh, there's so much going on.
10:03I mean, there's so many stuff, like, there's so much stuff in the books right now that I can't say.
10:08Which I'm like, ugh.
10:09But, soon.
10:11But we have Black-ish Season 6, which is coming out soon.
10:15Oh, my gosh.
10:17Season 6.
10:17That's crazy.
10:18Because I started the show when I was 9.
10:20And, you know, just seeing how far we've come, it's, like, really cool.
10:23And then we have Amari and the Night Brothers, which I am producing with Don Cheadle.
10:29And Randiville, which we are about to get on soon.
10:32And then we have so much stuff going on.
10:35I mean, we're always working in the office.
10:37And even when I'm not there, they're still working.
10:39So, yeah.
10:40We keep on pushing.
10:41So.
10:42What has the feedback been like from people you just meet on the street?
10:45Have they told you anything inspirational that made you just sit back and be like, wow, this is, I'm really in this position?
10:51Yeah, of course.
10:52There's so many of you guys that are just so supportive and so sweet.
10:57And, you know, like, the positive energy that you guys bring and all the prayers and blessings that you guys give is absolutely amazing.
11:05And I thank you guys for that.
11:07So, just having, like, a supportive fan base is actually pretty cool.
11:11And it kind of brings me back to where, like, look how far I've come.
11:18And it's, like, really only the beginning.
11:20So, I just want to keep on making you guys proud.
11:22Any last minute advice that you want to give to the young black girls out there doing their thing who may want to be in your position one day?
11:32Probably just, of course, everyone says it, but really believe in yourself and love yourself before you get into something that you're uncomfortable with.
11:42And never, or actually, never get into something you're uncomfortable with.
11:47Really, like, talk and tell your people that you trust and really, you know, actually give in advice and take advice, you know?
11:58And audition-wise, because it's going to happen if you're in this industry, God, what's for you is what's for you.
12:08So, he will have a lane for you.
12:10So, if that isn't your time right now, there is something else for you that God is going to lead your way.
12:17And I feel like just being patient is one of the key things, because a bunch of things come quickly.
12:24A bunch of things kind of are in a slow pace.
12:26But as long as you take your time and you are still true to yourself, then it will come immediately.
12:32And it will come hard.
12:33So, you got to be prepared.
12:36Have you ever been in a position where you felt like, wait, this doesn't represent me?
12:40How do you handle that?
12:42Oh, yeah, of course.
12:43I, well, I know now, because I actually have, like, you know, a heavy support system, too.
12:50So, I feel like my parents would be like, uh-uh.
12:53No, no, no.
12:54That ain't going to work out.
12:55No, no, no.
12:56Or my publicist or my manager.
12:58I feel like that is one thing that doesn't take us down.
13:03Because we are in our own narrative, and we keep on pushing to do what we love.
13:09So, I never give it in, you know.
13:11I kind of just ignore the hate and keep on moving forward to what I love.
13:16So, what does a day in life for you looks like?
13:19You know, how do you stay, you know, do you meditate or anything before you start your day?
13:24You know, actually, I'm starting to meditate.
13:27I want to get, like, into the gym.
13:30Not for, like, good shape, but I feel like that kind of relieves something.
13:35Like, relieves, like, any stress that you have or, like, you know.
13:39But I went to Orange Theory the other day.
13:42And, bruh, literally my legs are sore right now.
13:47It was hard to sit down.
13:49Like, literally, it was so hard.
13:51It was ridiculous.
13:52But, other than that, actually, I feel like I'm just taking it, like, one step at a time.
13:59And really just focusing on myself at the moment.
14:02We've been having a lot of breaks and stuff lately.
14:04So, we've been going on vacation, spending time with my family and friends.
14:08And just sticking to my grounds and being grounded in who I actually am.
14:12And hanging out with my friends, doing regular teenage stuff.
14:15Well, we thank you so much.
14:17Have a great time, Enola.
14:18Y'all clap it out for Marseille Martin.
14:20Thank you, guys.
14:21Thank you, guys.
