00:00hey guys it's Charlie Penn relationships and wellness director here at essence
00:10magazine you guys know I love black love I love to talk about it I love to talk to
00:15the couples who inspire us every day and who are really just our relationship
00:20goals living and breathing so we're gonna talk today about how black love
00:24truly sustains us I have a very special couple here today to talk about how they
00:29keep their bond intact during this challenging time you know just how they
00:32really stay together it's it's been a rough time you guys but love truly
00:36conquers all and we have a special couple here today NBA champion Stephen Curry and
00:41his wife chef and New York Times best-selling author Ayesha Curry hey
00:45guys y'all are just adorable look at the light look at the smile
00:59like a crazy time it's been quarantine how is your family things the new normal is a
01:04little weird so how are you and your family doing and what are you learning
01:07about each other yeah you know we can't complain honestly we wouldn't dare we've
01:12we've it's definitely been an adjustment you know when it comes to work and all of
01:18our kids I mean we have they're probably by the time you see this eight five and
01:23two so we've got a full house you know zoom school was in full effect for a while and
01:30that was nuts I'm not a very good second grade substitute he's a great second grade
01:35teacher you were phenomenal I heard zoom school was real yes it was four zoom classes a day
01:42for a seven-year-old I get it it was tough though so it was ridiculous but we got through
01:48it she got through it so we're doing great we've really just been trying to see the silver
01:53linings and enjoying this time with our kids that especially you wouldn't have gotten otherwise
01:58to be quite honest so it's it's been it's been nice and you know just trying to keep up with
02:05the social climate and everything that's going on and trying to wrap your head around everything
02:11trying to figure out you know from our point of view like what to say what do we say how do we
02:16help how do you get involved there's just so many layers to life right now it's insane but I think
02:23we're navigating through it decently absolutely it's it's it's tough for all of us and what's
02:30been interesting and you hear a lot of couples say like with all of this time we've learned something
02:34new about each other because you know we don't often have that time that quality time together like
02:38you're talking about have you guys really just learned anything new funny interesting about each
02:43other with all this extra time I'm laughing because I know exactly if you I know I'm nervous I don't
02:50know what you're like game where it's like guess what the answers match right I'm learning uh I thought
02:58I was uh clean and tidy and organized I was gonna say the same thing I thought I was I think I'm okay
03:06respectful or respectable I should say but when it comes to uh how it's been highlighted through this
03:13quarantine we have nowhere else to go but home I realized that is not my strong suit so we do that
03:18we have like household cleaning days and all that type of stuff it'll take me like six hours to clean
03:22what would take her too it's so bad like the little stuff like that it's funny because I love doing it
03:27and I got like these quirks where I get a little locked in on on where I can help and and and pitch in
03:33around the house especially the kids and all that but uh yeah when the fast pace of life and coming
03:38and going and traveling and the NBA schedule and all that type of stuff that's a pretty
03:42obviously it's pretty light and funny but it's it's a glaring uh weakness of mine you see how nice he
03:49is he just like talked about his own weakness yeah he's like me I love it I love it my whole thing
03:58I discovered you are a hot mess I can't I I don't know how many times I just the popcorn all we're in
04:06our room right now is it on the floor the popcorn kernels on the floor I don't know how many times
04:12a day are they in between the sheets too everywhere and popcorn kernels so that it sounds corny but
04:22that's really what I've learned is that like you he's great at laundry though oh there you go
04:28that's redeeming fantastic well if we're gonna talk about the other person then one thing I have
04:34learned is how much a schedule and being uh planned out from day to day to week to week
04:40it uh empowers her to to be efficient and productive so like yeah I can kind of go with
04:47the flow a little bit and can wake up and and try to figure out what what's going to happen that day
04:52just kind of fly by seeing my pants at times she's uh the exact opposite so we had we find a nice
04:58balance when it comes to that because if it was too uh particular and specific it would drive me
05:04crazy and the vice versa for her so we try to find that mental balance what we have uh especially with
05:10the three kids trying to keep them entertained during quarantine we'll find some stuff to do we'll
05:14have a uh uh suggested schedule let's say yeah we can uh we can be able to pivot and all that type
05:19of stuff because you know like you said it's quarantine life is tough nobody has a playbook
05:24for this nobody this before so uh and you're missing that social interaction with you know your family
05:31and and friends and co-workers and all that type of stuff so it's different and speaking of that
05:36playbook you know there's also no playbook when it comes to like arcades right and how to raise them
05:41how to talk to them and especially about talking to them about these challenging times we're in now
05:45uh what is it you both would like to see change in the world as parents what do you hope to see like
05:52where do you hope to see growth and how will you talk to your kids about it i mean just point and
05:58simple it's just uh you know respecting the black community in terms of uh all the different social
06:04injustices that are right in front of our face they've been existing we all know that now it's just
06:08being recorded um but in terms of as a parent you want to give your child the best opportunity to
06:14succeed and um and and give them a life that was better than when you were growing up just like
06:19our parents tried to do and when the conversation comes up around uh how those opportunities are are
06:27not um given to every single person on this in this country um just because the color of skin because
06:37of the systematic oppression that some people might not uh understand how deep it is and the historical
06:42impact that it's had those kind of conversations especially as our child comes up and to see the
06:47world and seeing her friends and seeing uh things that she's interested in and questions that she
06:52starts to ask uh um it's disheartening but it's also like we can be the generation that um gets
07:00uncomfortable with those conversations yeah uh with the change and knowing how we all can play our role
07:07to do that is we know it's not a it's not gonna happen overnight it's a marathon um i think somebody
07:13was talking about you got people in the street protest and you got people in in government trying
07:17to change policies you got uh people with a vast amount of resources uh financially time uh manpower
07:24to try to connect dots and um and really make change in all different types of avenues um you got
07:32people using their platforms just to spread awareness and information um we got storytellers
07:37that are doing amazing things to uh use their their abilities uh to connect with people allow other
07:44people's voices to be heard on a grander scale so uh everybody should be doing their part stay
07:49consistent with it um and you know do it together i think that's the biggest thing about how this
07:55moment feels different than any other moment as a parent we have the ability to pass that information
08:00down to our child children i should say but i think i think what's beautiful about right now
08:04too as a parent is that we're i find that a lot of parents are are in this generation are doing
08:11things differently so i remember growing up we weren't able to ask the questions right and when we
08:17did ask the question sometimes it'd be an issue or we wouldn't necessarily get the honest answer
08:22and so right now i think it's a great time when when when kids are asking you the questions
08:27not to sugarcoat it not to simplify it for them give them the honest answers and that's what we've
08:33been doing and i think that our well our son's too young to understand right now but our girls i think
08:39i think they're getting it and i think that's the first step in in change the children really are the
08:44future and so just ensuring that you're you're answering these questions that they have um and not
08:50carrying on that that generational baggage if you call it it's been amazing to see the youth
08:57in this movement and to see that opportunity and to kind of see our future really taking the torch you
09:02know i agree with you both completely it's a beautiful thing and i love that they have the
09:06questions and we can answer them and we can let them know um you all do so much work you know with
09:12your eat learn play with through the eat learn play foundation you the philanthropy you both do your
09:17family talk a little bit about a cup being a couple and kind of juggling business and philanthropy
09:23and family and all of that you know giving back is wonderful but it's also something we have to make
09:29time for and something else that we have to add on our plates yeah i think i think i think it's been
09:36one of the besides having our children it's been one of the best things we've been able to do
09:42together um to impact our community that has loved on us for so many years um our main focus is in the
09:50oakland community bay area uh as a lot of people know and you know the reason we start we've started
09:56there is because this community has always wrapped their arms around us and we we launched last july
10:03um and never thought that we'd be in the situation we're in right now having to have boots on the
10:11ground all hands on deck so heavy and amplified with the pandemic and full effect and everything
10:17else going on and so it's been a blessing to have that together to be able to help um you know our
10:23community um so we i mean we're just so grateful to be able to be in a position where we're able to do
10:29that together and one of the biggest things is uh our strengths are so different in terms of what we
10:35bring to the table and and to your question point about uh as a couple doing work together business
10:41and balance and personal uh kind of leaning into those like she's an amazing ideator and can think
10:48big and uh is so passionate about helping people uh i'm more like the the operator you tell me
10:54something you know to do i'm full force ready to go and uh and and try to bring a lot of energy to it
11:00and and and find ways to uh to uplift people uh just from making them feel good and and and getting
11:06to know them that type of thing and that comes in all different uh you know facets but balancing
11:12what our strengths are in terms of how that pours into our eat learn play foundation or anything that
11:17we do together um and any other opportunity but it's also kind of just the uh knowing that the amazing
11:26opportunities we have as a couple uh to do amazing things not to lose the the relationship part of it
11:34and it has to be very intentional and sometimes it does get away from you and we're the first to admit
11:38uh you know you could go uh a week or two without really like sitting down talking about something
11:44that's not about either the kids or you know about the house um and you just gotta be real about it
11:50because it is there's there's pressure there's expectations not only outside coming in but from
11:55inside going out because we know that we are blessed to be in this position yeah so um you gotta have
12:02some grace with yourself at the end of the day um if things kind of spiral out of control you get too
12:07busy or too distracted things like that but um our foundation is solid i think that's what it all comes
12:12back to i love that you said grace you know because i think that's something that comes with growth
12:17for all of us is learning to give your partner the grace and yourself right things can just get it
12:23it could be a lot absolutely um and even now just like she said in this moment yeah what we set out
12:31to do with our foundation was to address um issues for the next generation here in oakland
12:36um with access to nutritious meals safe places to play uh supporting the education through college
12:45completion that need has only exponentially grown since you know covid has been a reality for us and
12:52so uh obviously it's not just us two we have amazing teams and people that that uh believe the same
13:00things we do and are very like-minded but um it's a lot and and there's a responsibility that comes with
13:06that too it's a wonderful example too that you you're both studying for your children you know
13:12like how we can give back and support our communities and speaking of children aisha what
13:17has becoming a mother really taught you about the woman that you are and how has it changed you
13:23gosh well i mean first of all i think it's crazy when you become a mom you don't realize
13:31how much time you wasted beforehand at least that was the case for me like i i get done exponentially
13:38more now in a 24-hour period than i ever did before having kids but i think not not to be a copycat and
13:47go back to the grace thing but i do think you learn to forgive yourself more um and you you instantly
13:55begin to realize that you know perfection doesn't exist and it's not ever something to aspire to as a
14:04parent or as a woman um and that i say this all the time but just finding that beauty in the chaos
14:09because life life as a mom is chaotic and a lot of times it just doesn't make sense and it's never
14:15ending and it's go go go and and i think when you stop to find the little things within that as a mom
14:21the bright spots um you find peace and happiness and joy and that those moments are perfection um i think
14:30that's what perfection is and so i think that's what i've learned as a mom to just in a sense even
14:35though i'm a lists girl and a schedule girl to love a list yeah yeah and it's it's worked for me
14:42so i love it my favorite job um if we can even call it that but i i love it i love being a mom
14:50we love watching you do it you know that you share and instagram and all that and steph i won't leave
14:55you out how has being a dad changed you as a man and what's been your biggest moments thus far as a
15:01father i mean that's a lot i think just in terms of um knowing that it's not really about you at the
15:10end of the day um and for me just speaking on the stage that i've been on as a professional athlete and
15:16uh people he prays on you all the time for stuff that doesn't even make sense to you
15:23because you're just living life and doing what you've been doing you know since you can remember
15:27and what you worked your uh your butt off for from from time but as a parent the reward comes every
15:35single day um just the little things right like and to to her earlier point around just even this
15:41moment where really leaning into what this new reality looks like um being being able to be home
15:48and not be on the road and seeing my kids grow up day after day and really creating a new uh deeper
15:55bond with them um i really felt that of these last you know three four months and um and even like a
16:03specific example of being able to go to a protest here and uh in the bay area and take our seven-year-old
16:09daughter and seeing her with eyes wide open taking in the the sights the sounds the the chance that we
16:16were doing asking those questions uh who knows you know if we would have had that opportunity had
16:22you know um right cove not been a part like schedules wouldn't create who knows that would
16:28actually happen in that moment with empower uh empower empowering to to me to um to have that
16:35experience with aisha and with riley and and and hopefully create more of those for our other two
16:41kids and um yeah those little moments you have to just take a second just appreciate them and even
16:47just say it out loud or i'll tell her just on a random like you know this is this is amazing just
16:52it's a simple sound like this is awesome and and really uh just be grateful for it well we
16:59genuinely appreciate you guys coming to just keep it real about love and marriage and family
17:04and always being so open and honest and you know keep the love alive and thank you for sharing it
17:10with us and thank you guys so much i appreciate you thank you
