Transcript
00:00we posted this on instagram recently about the strong black woman syndrome where we feel like
00:06even at work we have to do it all we have to be everything to everybody and we can't show emotion
00:13can you talk to us about why that is so damaging and why that's something that as a collective
00:20we have to strip away well first we gotta understand where it came from and it came from
00:27it started off as an empowerment saying right because we're always neglected we're always at
00:32the bottom of the totem pole we're the least respected on the planet right um human species
00:39and so um it came as a thing to empower us right so it became the black i'm a strong black woman right
00:47to empower us but then as years go on we've been ignored because of that very statement
00:56well you know it dehumanizes us it dehumanizes our pain um it belittles our tears um it belittles
01:07like i said our pain we're supposed to be able to watch our brothers and sons and fathers get
01:14murdered in the street and but we can take it because we're we're strong right we can deal with
01:19it we can handle it and that's just not true um i haven't i have issues with titles like that and
01:27like black girl magic um because we're not fairies you know what i mean we don't magically uh rebound
01:34from out from pain we hurt and suffer just like others and i just i just always felt some kind of way
01:41about those titles um once i became aware of what they were doing to us um the damage that it was
01:50creating for us and the stigma around black women um to implement that we are strong enough to get over
01:58anything that's why we suffer in in the emergency rooms where you know we can handle it oh we're tough
02:05you know our sister serena williams had a near-death experience because what she's looked at because
02:12she's tough she's a strong black woman like that you have to be careful with that very careful with that
02:19term there's a time to be strong but see anything another thing with our people is we think strength is
02:26in you know vibrato or like but strength is in being vulnerable and that's what i want my people to
02:32understand the strength is in being vulnerable and being honest with yourself and saying you know
02:39what i'm scared right now or i honestly don't know what to do right now absolutely that's strength
02:48and also seeking help and being like you know what i need help i need to talk to somebody absolutely
