Jurnee Smollett talks about her new show 'Lovecraft Country' and its impact on today's society.
Transcript
00:00There's something here that's trying to get out.
00:06Everything is where and as it should be.
00:13Watching this series with everything that's going on right now in the country,
00:17you have the very real thrill ride of, yes, you guys are fighting monsters and demons.
00:22But then you, Atticus, you guys are also saying a huge fuck you to white supremacy,
00:28racist cops like Jim Crow, like all of the things.
00:31And that is, that could be in itself.
00:33You could even just take away the monsters and still have this really compelling story.
00:38So what I'm trying to ask is, what does it feel like to have Lovecraft come out at this time
00:44with the way the country is right now?
00:48You know, I think we're in the midst, one, of fighting two pandemics.
00:53You know, and I think what we're seeing is people are tired of them killing us.
01:03I mean, it literally comes down to that, okay?
01:06Emmett Till is Trayvon Martin.
01:09These, George Floyd, unfortunately, Breonna Taylor, unfortunately, these situations,
01:15we've grown up with this.
01:17Our ancestors grew up with this.
01:21And, you know, this systemic racism that the nation was built upon,
01:25because it hasn't been dismounted yet, we haven't healed from it, right?
01:30And I think what encourages me and excites me about being a part of a story like Lovecraft,
01:37you know, it goes back to the very widely quoted quote by Nina Simone,
01:41you know, when she says it's the duty of the artist to reflect the times.
01:46And not only is the story timely, but it's also personal.
01:51It's so deeply personal for us.
01:54I know what it's like to feel displaced.
01:57I know what it's like to have that great shock, you know,
02:00that James Baldwin talks about when you discover that this nation,
02:04that you owe your identity to, right, has yet to create a space for you.
02:10And this is, I know this, this is the blood memory we talk about, right?
02:16So I'm excited because I feel like Lovecraft Country
02:20contributes to this discussion and doesn't negate it.
