00:00Eurosport of the 1999 FIA World Rally Championship, this is round two, another real special event like the Monty, this is Sweden.
00:08Well, you will have been blind if you haven't seen in the news the stories of deep, deep Arctic temperatures all over Scandinavia,
00:16but unfortunately that hasn't meant a snowy Swedish rally, because the snow didn't come before it started freezing.
00:23In the last few weeks, although temperatures have been very low at night, it has rained during the day, so this is more of an ice event than the traditional snow event.
00:30But having said that, it has never yet been won by a non-Scandinavian, and with Carlos Sainz finishing second in the last three years,
00:39then he is the man perhaps most are looking at to break this Scandinavian domination of the event.
00:53So here we go then, round two of the championship, as I said, like the Monty, a real specialist event,
00:58and it's been thrown into confusion this year because of the lack of snow.
01:02Normally tyre choice is about the easiest part of the event, and this year it's going to be considerably more tricky.
01:08Well, in the news, of course, Colin McRae's Ford Focus dropped out of the results for an illegally placed water pump after the Monte Carlo rally,
01:17but Malcolm Wilson says it's all back together again.
01:19There's been a lot of sleepless nights for a lot of people, but we've had tremendous support from Ford, from Dearborn, from Cologne, from Dunton,
01:29obviously all our people, and basically we've come up with a package.
01:33We did think it would be very, very difficult, but with all the support and the backup of these people,
01:37we've come up with a package whereby we've managed to get the standard pump in there and managed to get the correct drive to it.
01:43We haven't done any testing with it, but we're quite confident that the solution will be okay.
01:49Well, Colin McRae had a chance to shake down the car.
01:52They've lost, he thinks, a little bit of power, but it's all working all right.
01:56At least that's the way they hope it at the moment.
01:58Thomas Radstrom in the second car with Fred Gallagher alongside him.
02:02He won this event as a non-championship round back in 94.
02:06We're used to the sleepy conditions, to drive on snow and ice and so on.
02:15I mean, Monday morning you wake up and it's 40 centimetres of snow and you need to go to the work and you need to use your car,
02:21so that's, I mean, that's a little bit of it.
02:24Also in the forward camp run by Malcolm Wilson, is this escort WRC for Peter Solberg, the Norwegian, being brought under Malcolm's arms?
02:33Well, he hasn't had a very good start, unfortunately.
02:35He had an accident on the recce, but the thing with Petter is we've got a five-year plan with him,
02:41and this year, basically, we really just want him to finish the rally to get the experience.
02:45What we plan to do now, the original plan was to run him in an escort for the whole season,
02:50but because we want to speed up the development and the durability testing of the focus,
02:54from Catalonia onwards, we plan to put him in a focus.
02:58So, really, he's only going to do the one event, being the Swedish in an escort.
03:03Well, you talk about potential winners.
03:05Of course, you can't count out this man, the winner of the Monte Carlo rally
03:08and the winner of this event in 96 and 98.
03:11That's Finland's Tommy McInerney, the three-times world champion.
03:15Everybody wants to beat me here because we've been performing quite well here
03:22the last three, four times that we've been here,
03:26and I think, I believe this year, because of so little snow, the condition is very fast,
03:36and I think we are more equal, and it's coming much tighter than earlier years.
03:41No scopes in Sweden, but Hyundai opened their world championship account.
03:44The Korean manufacturer's F2 car with 95 British champion Alistair McRae and Sweden's Kenneth Eriksson on board.
03:52Carlos Sainz, of course, twice, second place, rather, in the last three years,
03:57will really be looking here to try and beat that bogey.
04:00I think Tommy will win the rally, but I think Carlos is, if it's going to happen, it will be Carlos,
04:09as long as he will be driving, because it's been very close before, just missing some seconds,
04:13so I think it's him who has to do it in that way.
04:16Well, there you go.
04:16Even Kenneth Eriksson doesn't think that Carlos Sainz can do it, but can he or can he not?
04:21He finished second in 96, 97, and 98, and this is one of three events with San Raymond, Australia,
04:27that the Spaniard has never won.
04:29I have been finishing second here three years in a row.
04:33Very, very close, especially in 97, I think I was starting last day first,
04:39and first car in the road, and at the end I lost the rally by 11 seconds due to really the order.
04:46In the last day it was not so nice, it was from Fresno, and it didn't work so well.
04:51But, yes, I would like to win this rally, I would like to be the first non-Scandinavian driver to win here.
04:59But it's not easy.
05:00Say that again.
05:02Of course, he already holds several records, including the winner of the most world championship events,
05:06but will he be the first non-Scandinavian to crack the Swedish?
05:09Well, here's the map for leg one.
05:11Will he even make it through the first stage?
05:14Of course, the last two competitive stages he's run,
05:16the last on the Rally of Great Britain and the first on the Monte Carlo he's crashed out of,
05:21but he starts here.
05:23This is the first stage, and courtesy of some great stage camera coverage,
05:29we'll be able to watch the Spaniard all the way through.
05:39Well, 10.43 a.m., and no question about it, I'm sure,
05:43a little bit of extra pressure here as Carlos gets away.
05:47There's a car three, and that all-important first corner.
05:54Safely negotiated.
05:55In fact, Carlos opens his Swedish account with a real vengeance.
06:12Whatever other people might have expected, perhaps a little bit of reticence on the first stage.
06:17There was certainly none of that, and he blitzed through, claiming the fastest time.
06:21Impressively, second fastest was Thomas Radstrom in the Ford Focus,
06:25the first competitive stage miles he's ever done in that car.
06:28That was a pretty good run for him.
06:31So, Carlos Sainz, with his foot well and truly down.
06:35This is a very determined Spanish driver and co-driver pairing.
06:39They really do want to win this event very badly, indeed.
06:43Well, whether Tommy Makan and a host of other Scandinavians can stop them or not remains to be seen.
06:48Join us in a moment after the break, and we'll take you through the stage courtesy of Tommy Makanen and his onboard camera.
06:55We'll be back in a moment.
06:57Don't go away.
07:05Welcome back to Eurosport's night-by-night coverage of the 1999 Swedish Rally,
07:10round two of the FIA World Rally Championship.
07:12And here we start the first stage with the first man away.
07:15It's Tommy Makanen, third quickest stage time for him on this opening test,
07:22behind Carlos Sainz, the man who, of course, always shapes up as his arch-rival,
07:26and Thomas Radstrom.
07:27Well, Makanen lacking nothing in commitment.
07:38Although he did admit later on during the day that taking some of these crests blind flat out in sixth gear,
07:44and that equates to over 200 kilometers an hour, that's 120 plus in miles,
07:49then he said, even I get scared sometimes.
07:54And when we take the onboard pictures, courtesy of Tommy's car, you will see why.
07:59Here we go, and for the gnomes of you, notice the double dash in front of Risto, Manus & Machi,
08:12the gear change being shown in the middle, down to fifth gear,
08:15and the digital rev counter there as well, so perfect onboard view of exactly what he's doing in the car.
08:24Bear in mind, six gear here, and this is speeds of over 100 miles an hour.
08:29It looks pretty narrow and twisty, and that's no illusion.
08:32This is certainly much narrower than your average stage.
08:35All right, all right, very enjoyable so far.
08:48Nice condition, very fast.
08:50It's going to be a fast rally. Are you happy with that?
08:53Yes, it's okay. It's okay. It's good.
08:57A fast rally, and that means no quarter given or asked by Sainz or Machinan.
09:04Moving on here with Carlos on stage two, second quickest to Machinan's Mitsubishi.
09:08So, Machinan taking the lead after the second stage.
09:15Luis Moyer there reaching above his driver's head for something,
09:18possibly making a change to the intercom system, replugging it in,
09:22or maybe he's just dimming the cabin lights for landing.
09:27It's a good start. I think now we are equal with Tommy anyhow in the classification
09:53because he took back two seconds in the last one,
09:55but it's good to start at the moment.
09:59Here is Thomas Radstrom then, second quickest on the first two stages
10:03and a very strong third overall.
10:06Of course, he understands these conditions also well,
10:09but he's never driven the Ford Focus on competitive stages before.
10:14He couldn't have a more experienced co-driver, Fred Gallagher.
10:18He's been around for years, and he's still one of the top-notch men.
10:22Thomas Radstrom really looking very impressive indeed early on on this event.
10:28Radstrom, of course, won the event in 1994 when it wasn't a full championship round of the WRC,
10:34but that doesn't make any difference. He's still a winner here in Sweden.
10:38The car is working 100%.
10:42Fred, how is he settling in?
10:46Marvellously. I mean, it's been a very smooth but quick ride so far.
10:50Looking forward to these next few stages as well?
10:52Yeah, I look forward to all of it.
10:53Didier Oriel at the start of Stage 1 here, fourth overall after Stage 2,
11:01and the Frenchman really working very hard indeed.
11:06The view of the car from the outside and certainly from the on-board shots.
11:11Didier Oriel really working for his position as well he might.
11:16Fourth quickest on the first stage,
11:18and moving up to third quickest behind teammate Carlos Sainz on Stage 2.
11:23So looking very good early on.
11:25No problems to report for him.
11:28This is Colin McRae's Ford Focus,
11:30and note the little Jim Bamber cartoon there.
11:33A disconsolate Colin kicking a stone away,
11:35presumably as he tramps back from Monte Carlo,
11:38dragging a big water pump behind him.
11:40Well, all of that is behind him now,
11:43and on these ultra-skinny tyres,
11:44it makes the cars look very narrow indeed,
11:47but if they're not, they have the same track as normal.
11:50They just have very narrow tyres,
11:52of course fully studded to cope with the snow and ice.
11:56Fifth overall after Stage 2, any problems?
11:59Colin, first two stages, no problems?
12:02Not really, no, just a bit too cautious.
12:04Just building up confidence in the surface with the new car,
12:07so no problems, just needing to go a bit quicker.
12:11Disappointment in Stage 1 for Seat's two WRC entries.
12:15Marcus Grunholm retired in the Stage with a fuel pump failure.
12:19Harry Rovenperer had an identical problem.
12:22He did, however, manage to limp out of the Stage.
12:24The team think that some foreign substance in the fuel,
12:28and probably sort of water-based,
12:30froze at some stage in the fuel pump.
12:33But Harry Rovenperer still in,
12:35even though Marcus Grunholm is out.
12:37Rovenperer, though, not looking happy at all.
12:39Marcus has retired with another programme exactly,
12:43something where he couldn't start the engine again.
12:46And Harry had a lot of problems during this stage,
12:49and he has lost eight minutes.
12:50So, I mean, it's not a very good start.
12:53But it's our first year in Sweden with these cars,
12:56and we have to learn quite a lot.
12:58So, Tommy Mackinan leading then after the first couple of stages
13:03by half a second from Carlos Sainz.
13:05The battle well and truly on.
13:06And Thomas Radstrom determined to get involved as well.
13:10Didier Oriel halfway between him and Colin McRae
13:13with Sebastian Lindholm,
13:14yet another Scandinavian driver in the top order.
13:17Well, it looks all very straightforward here.
13:26You just choose studded tyres and off you go.
13:28But that's not the story at all.
13:30Because of the lack of deep snow,
13:32it's been a very difficult choice for the drivers
13:35and for the tyre manufacturers.
13:37And because quite a lot of them have changed teams,
13:38and as a result, some of them tyre manufacturers,
13:41over the winter,
13:42some really don't know quite what to expect.
13:45Among them are drivers like Colin McRae
13:48moving from Pirelli to Michelin,
13:50and Juhar Kankinen moving the other way.
13:52The biggest problem with this rally this year
13:54is because there's no snow,
13:56it's obviously been a hard frost,
13:57but what that means is that you very quickly
13:59get down to the gravel,
14:01and that creates havoc with the tyres.
14:03So, basically, it will become more of a technical rally,
14:06and the drivers will have to think a little bit
14:08on the longer stages to try and preserve the tyres
14:10on, say, the early section,
14:12so that at least it can be competitive on the latter section.
14:15So, it's not normally the Swedish rally
14:17is quite straightforward,
14:18it's a consistent surface from start to finish
14:20when it's full of snow,
14:21but because there's no snow and it's just ice snubbing,
14:24it makes it much more technical,
14:25and I think, you know,
14:27on the long stages,
14:28you'll see some quite significant differences
14:30in the times,
14:31whereas you wouldn't if it was consistent.
14:33Well, the really long stages come in day two of the event,
14:36but as we mentioned,
14:37tyres here in Sweden,
14:39the only event in the calendar
14:40where they use studs.
14:41The tyres are narrower than normal,
14:44and there are different kinds of studs
14:46for the different surfaces,
14:47as Emis Chattard of Michelin explains.
14:49Two kind of tyres,
14:51this one for the snow,
14:53and the second one for the ice.
14:55You can see the completely different
14:56tread block patterns on them, he says.
14:58Blocks of rubber have to be very strong indeed
15:00to hold the studs in,
15:01because it's pretty tough work
15:02breaking down into the surface of the ice.
15:05Drivers have to choose the pattern,
15:06and then the stud length
15:08is very important as well.
15:10There are two different sizes,
15:115mm and 7mm studs,
15:13and the effort required
15:14to break into the ice surface
15:16with the two differences of length
15:18is very different.
15:23Now, in his left hand,
15:24he's got the shorter, stubbier 5mm.
15:26In the right hand there,
15:28as we're looking at it,
15:29sorry, right and left,
15:30there's the longest 7mm one.
15:32The 7mm, very sharp,
15:34good for cold ice,
15:35minus 20 to minus 30.
15:37It says when we're getting into gravel
15:38and slightly warmer ice,
15:40we have to use the tougher,
15:41stubbier 5mm stud,
15:43but it takes a lot more friction
15:46to force its way into the ice.
15:51Well, Makinen did a great job
15:52in terms of tyre choice on the Monti.
15:54Will he be able to do the same in Sweden?
15:57We'll see after the break
15:58how the second part of day one
15:59went for him and all the others.
16:01Back to the FIA World Rally Championship
16:06with Ford.
16:16Welcome back to Eurosport's
16:17nightly coverage.
16:18This is the first day
16:19of the Swedish Rally Round 2
16:21of the 99 WRC.
16:23Well, 6th overall
16:35at the end of the first day,
16:36Richard Burns.
16:37He had a pretty wretched time
16:38on the Monte Carlo Rally
16:39on his return
16:40from Mitsubishi
16:41to Subaru.
16:43In 5th place
16:44is Colin McRae
16:45in the Ford Focus.
16:47Now, check out
16:48just in front
16:49of the driver here,
16:50very clearly you can see
16:51a crazed windscreen
16:52which can't have helped.
16:53But things were even worse
16:54on the next stage.
16:56McRae went off
16:56at some 80 miles an hour
16:58shattering the wheel,
16:59tyre and disc.
17:01It was a long,
17:01fast right-hander
17:02and he went off
17:03on the outside
17:04of the corner.
17:06Well, let's hear him
17:07talk us through it.
17:09I just slid a bit wide
17:10in a corner
17:11and the back wheel
17:12went in the ditch
17:12and there must have been
17:13a big rock in the snow
17:14and it broke the rear wheel.
17:17So we had to do
17:17about 10 k's
17:18with a broken rear wheel.
17:19How much time
17:20do you think you've lost?
17:21About a minute
17:22to everyone.
17:25That's the way it goes.
17:27That would have been
17:27a perfect day.
17:28It can only get better.
17:31Colin taking it all
17:32in very good spirit.
17:33Fourth then
17:34on the end of day one.
17:36Didier Auriol
17:37in the Toyota Corolla
17:38and the two Toyotas
17:40really putting in
17:41a very strong challenge
17:42indeed
17:42in the early going here.
17:44Well, we've ridden
17:48on board
17:49with his teammates.
17:51Let's have a chance
17:51now to join
17:52Didier Auriol
17:53and Denis Girardet.

18:39Fantastic stuff, flat out in 6th gear, barely touching the ice
18:45Third place, though, a great overall result after day one for Thomas Radstrom
18:50No problems today?
18:55Some small problems, I mean, this clutch is really funny sometimes
18:58But I get more used to it now, I hope
19:01I don't install the engine tomorrow
19:03In fact, he installed the engine three times at the starts of stages
19:07Which is what he's referring to
19:08Carlos Sainz, second at the end of the first day by just 1.7 seconds
19:13He and Tommy Makanen really do cut it fine
19:15The margin between them is almost nil
19:17Well, Carlos Sainz, he's finished in this position in the last three years
19:22What does he think about day one?
19:26We were going quite fast today
19:29Trying to go as fast as possible
19:33And, well, everything was working okay
19:35The tyres were working very well
19:37The car as well
19:38The car, we didn't have any problems at all
19:40And so everything went well
19:42Actually, today, the conditions were
19:45The road conditions were quite good
19:47I have been here with less snow
19:48The only problem is, in a few stages, we did not have snow banks
19:52And that is not so nice
19:54But some other stages, the conditions were really better than previous years
19:58What he's referring to there, of course, are the banks of snow at the edges of the stages
20:02That the drivers use quite often to straighten up a sliding car
20:05So then, the leader after the first day
20:08The winner of the first round of the championship
20:10The reigning champion, indeed three times
20:12The world champion, Tommy Makanen
20:14Well, Finns have won the Swedish before
20:17He did it last year
20:18He did it in 96
20:19Juhar Kankinen did it back in 86
20:21When he won the world championship
20:22Tommy Makanen leading and looking strong
20:25In the morning, these stages, they were good
20:30Because there was not so much snow
20:33But later in the afternoon
20:38These stages from Tuespur down to here
20:41There was quite a lot more snow
20:42And the grip was not so good
20:46But to be in the first car
20:48It was, I think, a slight disadvantage
20:50But tomorrow's stages, I think, they are clean
20:53And there is no snow at all
20:55And I think it doesn't matter who is the first
20:57Of course, it only matters who's first
21:01At the end of the final stage
21:02Tommy Makanen leads then by 1.7 seconds
21:05From Carlos Sainz
21:06Thomas Redstrom, a great third place
21:08Didier Oriel, hanging in there in fourth
21:10Colin McRae, after that wheel shattered
21:13Lost a minute
21:13So he's nearly two adrift in fifth place
21:15Richard Burns in sixth
21:17And just outside the top six
21:19Juhar Kankinen is seventh
21:20Hagstrom's Toyota is eighth
21:22And Bruno Tiri in the fly-by-wire
21:25Subaru Legacy is in tenth position
21:28But he is now not registered for points
21:31Twelve leg two
21:32This is going to be the real car breaker
21:34This should possibly decide the event
21:36The fourth stage today in Yudbo is 48 kilometers
21:40And that could be the one that decides the event
21:43Of course, choose the wrong tires
21:45And halfway through you will find yourself
21:47With no studs and no grip
21:50And at these kind of speeds
21:51Nobody wants to be in that position
21:53I'm Martin Haven
21:54Until tomorrow night
21:55From me and Toby Moody in the trenches
21:57Bye-bye
21:58The FIA World Rally Championship
22:14Having passed the man who held that position overnight
22:18His teammate Richard Burns
22:20The driver from Reading sliding down the order
22:23As the man from Espoo moves up it
22:26Well, the top four drivers are on Michelin tires
22:31Fifth and sixth position on Pirellis
22:34Is there something of another tire story going on here?
22:37Or could it simply be down to the facts
22:39That both Subaru drivers
22:41Were on Michelin tires last year
22:43Kankinen at Ford and Burns at Mitsubishi
22:46And they really don't quite yet understand
22:48The Pirelli tire arsenal for these conditions
22:5170, long medium left
22:5470, crest to long K right
22:59Opens to long medium right
23:02Over bridge
23:03And tightens to long K right
23:05Tightens
23:06And fast left
23:0970, long, easy left
23:15Well, whatever the situation
23:19It's clear that both the Subaru drivers
23:21Are struggling somewhat for grip
23:23On the P0 covers
23:24But as I said
23:25Getting used to the cars
23:28And getting used to the tires
23:29On such a specialist event
23:31Is not the work of a moment
23:32And it may just be unfamiliarity
23:34With the Pirelli arsenal
23:35That is giving them these problems
23:38However, Kankinen in fifth
23:39Richard Burns in sixth
23:41And it looks as though
23:42The Subarus will score strongly
23:44In terms of world championship points
23:46At least
23:46Bruno Thierry incidentally
23:47In the fly-by-wire car
23:49Just outside the leading group
23:51After a transmission change
23:53During the middle of day two
23:54So there we go
23:56Halfway through
23:57Well, early days
23:58In fact, in day two
23:59Stage ten
24:00The bulk of the day is still to go
24:01Kankinen now extending his advantage
24:04To eleven and a half seconds
24:07Over Carlos Sainz
24:08Radstrom adrift
24:09But in touch
24:10Didier Oriel adrift
24:11But in touch
24:11With third place
24:12Kankinen and Burns
24:14As you can see
24:14Three minutes away
24:15From the lead group
24:16And really squabbling
24:17Between themselves
24:18From the bottom two rungs
24:19Of the top six ladder
24:21More action
24:22In a second
24:23Valley Championship
24:26Michelin
24:28The more we progress
24:29The further you go
24:30Swedish rally rounds
24:37That's two of the 1999
24:39World Rally Championship
24:40And day two
24:41The battle for fifth and sixth place
24:43Being fought out
24:44Between Subaru pair
24:45Richard Burns
24:45And Juhar Kankinen
24:46Burns started fifth overnight
24:48Kankinen took the place back
24:50And then promptly lost it again
24:51In the middle of the afternoon
24:52To Richard Burns
24:53So the former champion
24:59Back down in sixth position
25:01I can give you half
25:12How was the stage
25:13Oh, it was okay
25:14Not too bad
25:17But tire doesn't work
25:20Same thing than before
25:21So, it won't travel out there?
25:23Not too bad
25:24But a little bit, yes
25:25Well, I think
25:31Body language
25:32And what he didn't say
25:33Expressing exactly
25:34What he felt there
25:35Juhar Kankinen
25:36Not entirely happy
25:37At the moment
25:38In the Subaru
25:39Richard Burns
25:41Having fought back
25:42On stages 11 and 12
25:44Into fifth position
25:45Passing his teammate
25:46But with a pair of them
25:47Three minutes adrift
25:48Of the lead battle
25:48It really is
25:49Inter-Nissan rivalry
25:50For Subaru
25:52Richard, how was the stage?
26:04Hard work
26:05After about two thirds of the way
26:07Then we lost
26:08Quite a lot of grip
26:09So, from there on
26:11I was
26:11You just have to
26:13Drive to the level of grip
26:14You have
26:14And it wasn't much
26:15Do you think you make
26:17The right choice for tires?
26:18I don't
26:19Don't really know
26:19You don't know
26:21Because I don't know
26:23If anybody else has taken
26:24What other options
26:25We have
26:25But that's it
26:29Little bit of a
26:32Suck it and see proposition
26:33Clearly at the moment
26:34For both men
26:34And Subaru
26:36Not really being able
26:36To guide them clearly
26:38In what they might consider
26:39To be the ideal direction
26:41Of course
26:41The Subarus alone
26:42Among the front running cars
26:43On Pirellis
26:44It means that they can't
26:45Look at what other people
26:46Are using
26:47As a guide to whether
26:48They were right or wrong
26:49Fourth position then
26:50Didier Oriel
26:51This is on the
26:5248km
26:54Potential car breaker
26:56And potential rally
26:57Changing stage 12
26:58The Jutbo stage
27:00Didier Oriel
27:01At high speed
27:02And still holding on
27:04Very well indeed
27:05To the pace
27:06Of the front runners
27:06Didier Oriel
27:22Second fastest here
27:23It was okay
27:24It was quite
27:26Quite hard for the tyre
27:28So sometimes
27:30You think you try
27:31Too slow
27:32But you have no grip
27:33At all
27:34So you just try
27:34To find the grip
27:35Everything's fine
27:38Yeah
27:39I think I find a good adjust
27:40Now with my balance
27:41Of diff
27:42I was quite happy
27:43In the stage
27:44Yeah
27:45Well still holding on
27:48To third place
27:49Thomas Radstrom
27:50In Ford's
27:51Remaining focus
27:52Radstrom
28:02Radstrom restarted
28:03On leg two
28:0420 seconds behind
28:05Carlos Sainz's
28:06Second place Toyota
28:07But managed to carve
28:08The deficits down
28:09To nearly half that
28:10Finishing just
28:1111.7 behind
28:13Although in the
28:15Later stages
28:16In the afternoon
28:17Particularly after
28:17Stage 12
28:18That was extended
28:19Once more
28:20As the Spaniard
28:21Rallied
28:21And at the end
28:23Of the day
28:23Radstrom finishes
28:2418 seconds
28:25In arrears
28:26Thomas a fantastic
28:36Show for the
28:37Swedish fans
28:37Maybe you can do
28:38It tomorrow as well
28:39I hope so
28:41I have tried
28:42Absolutely
28:43Flat out today
28:44But
28:44Unfortunately
28:45We took
28:46Wrong tyres
28:47On the long stage
28:48And then I lost
28:48A lot of time
28:50I will say
28:50Well stage 14
28:53The last of the day
28:54Held at the base
28:56Of the Olympic
28:57Ski jumping hill
28:59You saw it
28:59In the background
29:00There
29:00And the super special
29:02With a monster
29:0420,000 plus
29:05Crowd
29:06Freezing in clearly
29:08Now
29:08Sub-zero temperatures
29:09And the traditional
29:11Two by two
29:12Format
29:12Here we see
29:16Carlos Sainz
29:17Versus
29:18Tommy McKinnon
29:19Well Carlos Sainz
29:31Ending the day
29:32In second place
29:33Carlos
29:34You've got it all to do
29:35Tomorrow
29:36Yeah
29:37I think it's
29:38Nearly impossible
29:39If Tommy has no
29:40Problem
29:41I think it's
29:42Impossible
29:42Tommy has said
29:43It's been one of
29:44The hardest days
29:44He's ever done
29:45Well it doesn't
29:47Look like that
29:47Carlos Sainz
29:51In very good form
29:52In day
29:52Tommy
29:53McKinnon
29:54As well
29:54Tommy
29:55Finishing day two
29:56Are you happy
29:57To be in the position
29:58That you are in
29:59With the time
29:59That you have
30:00Yes
30:01Very happy
30:02I have to say
30:03It's been an excellent day
30:05Hard day
30:06Hard day
30:07Carlos and Thomas
30:09And Didier
30:10Has been pushing
30:11Very hard
30:12All day
30:13And
30:13It's been very difficult
30:16But
30:16Everything
30:17Has been going well
30:18And
30:18Car
30:19Tyres
30:21Everything
30:21No problems
30:22Well Carlos Sainz
30:25You clearly saw there
30:26Looking a little bit
30:27Resigned to his fate
30:2930.8 seconds
30:30Adrift
30:31And a fairly short
30:33Day three
30:34To round out
30:35This Swedish rally
30:36Thomas Radstrom
30:3748 seconds behind
30:3818 seconds behind
30:40Sainz
30:40Possibility of second place
30:41On merit
30:42Still a possibility
30:43Of course
30:44Of disaster
30:45As we've seen
30:45All too recently
30:46Up until
30:47The final moment
30:48Didier Oriel
30:49Fourth
30:50And the battle
30:51For fifth and sixth
30:52Solely I think
30:53Between the two
30:53Subarus of
30:54Burns
30:54And Kankinen

31:48Championship
31:48With
31:49With
31:49With
32:49the engine and the other underpinnings are hung but inside which the driver and the co-driver
32:55are placed for maximum security well tommy mackinen on stage 15 here with an overnight lead
33:02of some 30 seconds but it's so easy to hemorrhage time away if you make a poor tire choice mackinen's
33:09choice as on the monte carlo rally has been inspired throughout the swedish events though
33:14and certainly in terms of his choice from the michelin armoury on the final day of the swedish
33:19rally there was to be no mistakes in that department none either in terms of driving
33:31tommy mackinen going very well indeed through the opening tests on this early morning return
33:37back to the rally hq at karlstadt
33:48well mackinen led through most of day one giving best only to carlos science after a couple of stages
33:54and since then he has been firmly in charge the man who won in 96 and 98. okay nice stage nice fast
34:03excellent excellent condition excellent conditions and the man himself in top form as well well we
34:11heard from carlos science yesterday evening saying i think it's now impossible to catch tommy
34:16and certainly if mackinen keeps the car on the island it's hard to see
34:20quite what the all spanish crew in the lead toyota could do about it
34:26science though despite the rye smile and the clearly upbeat attitudes at the end of the second leg
34:33had far from given up any hopes of victory and was going to ring every ounce of performance out of
34:38his car that it could possibly give
34:45everything still to play for in the last 50 of the 350 nearly stage kilometers of this event
34:54carlos science using every inch of the road and much more as well
34:58if necessary to keep the toyota on the island
35:15well tommy mackinen professed to being a little bit tired this morning carlos science saying that he was
35:23he was trying as hard as possible with moya saying that although mackinen seemed to have a good lead he
35:30said uh we've been trying as hard as we can just to make sure he doesn't take it too easy
35:36of course with these speeds and on surfaces like this just a moment's concentration
35:49could be fatal but so far no slip ups from the two leaders i'm trying hard because thomas is only
35:5617 seconds behind so it's still 100 percent
35:59well a tommy ahead of him and a thomas behind and that thomas
36:08is the 33 year old sweet thomas radstrom brought into the ford camp and now in the self-surviving
36:15focus after colin mccrae's car sprung some kind of terminal problem the beginning of day two
36:23well the ford crew will have to wait until they get back to their british workshops to find out just
36:27what was the problem with the car but certainly radstrom has been going like a train
36:3450 50 medium left in bad right minus 80
36:46crest 20 medium left minus 40 bad right
36:57250
37:01crest 150
37:04crest in fast right 180
37:10medium right minus
37:15in fast left tightens medium plus
37:20120
37:26well radstrom with his eyes on a podium position but clearly not content with the third that he held
37:32overnight and looking enviously at carlos science's second position to make it an all scandinavian
37:38one two
37:39after stage 16 the second of the morning he said i'm not surprised to learn that carlos was quicker
37:44than me there was a lot of uphill sections and my engine isn't as powerful as the toyota's
37:49oh yes he said and the car's heavier too
37:57well that was after stage 16
38:11well that was after stage 16 the second of the morning radstrom was fourth fastest through there
38:17he was 5.6 seconds slower than the quickest car and that was carlos science tommy mackinnon was third
38:24quickest 4.9 adrift the closest man to the pace of science was didier oriel so while radstrom was looking ahead of him
38:33and casting his glance towards carlos
38:37he had to spare a look in the mirrors as well from time to time
38:41because the frenchman was pressing hard in the toyota in fourth place
38:44well over the last couple of seasons didier oriel's trademark grin has come and gone as
38:57his fortunes have waxed and waned but at the moment he seems to be relatively happy with his performance
39:05not wildly ecstatic perhaps after the end of the monte and
39:09not quite so happy with the setups he'd chosen for the toyota at the end of the first day
39:14of the swedish rally but after day two much much more in harmony with his car
39:20and on day three determined to try and snatch a podium position from radstrom
39:24and get two toyotas in the top three
39:38didier oriel's instructions to his ice and gravel note crews included not just telling him
39:57where the particularly tricky sections were but look out he said for anywhere that i can cut
40:02the corners cut cut cut think of it all the time and after coming out of some of the stages he was
40:08saying uh i really don't want to go back and look just where i had the car
40:15and envision there a perfect example a safe corner nicely cut another
40:19tenth or perhaps a hundredth of a second or two saved but it all counts
40:24we try to put the pressure we see what about this stage okay no problem it's fine slippery sometimes
40:46sometimes you sideways a lot with the studs because it's very hard and not a lot of ice but okay
40:54didier oriel the master of the understatement there slippery on an ice rally tommy macken and then
41:02after two stages on the final morning still leading from carlos science but the gap starting to be
41:08whittled down a little is macken and taking it easy or has science found something radstrom with didier
41:13oriel again closing on him so the toyota's both pulling themselves up by their bootstraps richard burns
41:20just two seconds ahead of his teammate juhar kankinen in all the point scoring positions more in a moment
41:27welcome back to euro sports final night of coverage of rally sweden this is bruno thierry
41:32the number 11 subaru debuting the company's fly-by-wire transmission system that enables the driver to
41:38select gears via a switch system mounted on the steering column this was changed to a normal manual
41:45gearbox on day two after they felt they'd got enough performance data and wanted to keep the car in
41:50the event we've had no real problems at all except for one overall problem that we seem to we seem to
41:59be struggling for grip and really all we can put it down to is the fact that the weather conditions are
42:04quite different to anything we had in testing and we were pleased with the way the tires were working
42:09uh in the testing but it's much milder we just haven't had the opportunity to test in these
42:14conditions and we seem to have been caught out a little bit well subaru of course on the pirelli
42:19covers so too our seat and this is harry rovenperer the finn also having problems with a fuel pump
42:26failure on day one that put his teammate marcus grunheim out while rovenperer dropped to about 80th
42:31overall but he was fighting back and had worked himself up in the 17th before the end of the events
42:37peter solberg the young norwegian in a works run escorts wrc learning fast and doing as malcolm wilson
42:43asked trying his very best to finish the event although sometimes it looked as though perhaps
42:48he might be in for a slap on the wrist from the boss well he comes in a fine 11th overall
42:54and from the rally catalunya onwards he will be mounted in a ford focus
42:58yeah i think it's going very well take no chances try to listen to malcolm and act professional and
43:13try to do the best of it i don't compare with nobody i just drive my own speed and
43:19i'm quite happy we have much more to go faster but have to use our head sometimes
43:28good lad freddie loix the belgian a real novice in these conditions and after his early retirement
43:35on stage one of the monte carlo rally wants to extend his championship a little bit more
43:40his objective here to learn about sweden but most of all to finish the rally in the mitsubishi
43:46he's ninth overall marco martin and thomas kitzing of estonia in their ford escort wrc have been
43:52inside the top 10 since day one and the estonian oil service sponsored car running very strongly
43:59indeed the pair putting in a fine performance
44:02just ahead of the eighth placed escort is the car number 12 the toyota corolla of passy hackstrom
44:17and terro gardermeister the finished pair reveling in the conditions scandinavian drivers of course
44:23excelling in the snow and ice passy hackstrom seventh overall on the return to karlstadt a fine
44:30result for him but disappointment indeed for kenneth ericsson and hyundai they had led the formula
44:36two category almost throughout the event into the final stage alistair mcrae was forced out on day two
44:43with a mechanical problem but ericsson let's looked set to take the korean manufacturer's first major title
44:50award until a kilometer and a half into the final stage the engine decided that its rally was over
44:57and as a result so too was the swedes ericsson a former winner of the event out of luck this time
45:04pers van then in the opel astra kit car winning formula two harry yoki in volkswagen's registered entry
45:13taking the points in the two liter cup your puka in the mitsubishi lancer winning in group n with
45:21that finished co-driver jaka hankunen after a rally long battle with swedish hero stig olav walfredsen
45:32well towards the end of the day two battles one overall between carlos sainz chasing tommy mackinen and
45:40one for fourth place and third place didier oriel chasing this man thomas radstrom
45:45so anything could change in the top four positions going into the final stage 20 seconds
45:54between mackinen and science and between science and radstrom but the swede only 4.3 seconds ahead
46:01of didier oriel the frenchman far from giving up very close indeed for third place well join us after the
46:09break to see whether it's the vastly experienced multiple championship willing talents of didier oriel
46:15that win out or is it the sweden and his ice and snow experience that will hold on to that third
46:24podium position we'll be back with the final action from the swedish rally just after this
46:29long medium left and keep left to very long medium right
46:44150 long fast left
46:53well for richard burns after a disappointing return to the subaru team with whom he really
46:57cut his rallying teeth on the monte carlo rally slightly more impressive here he started number
47:02five he finished number five but to finish ahead of four times world champion johar kankinen in
47:08identical machinery well you know you've been in a bit of a battle when you've done that
47:12i'll be very happy if we if we finished here in front of you i mean that's the best we could have
47:27done um really in this conditions the car has been okay but the tires have been the let down for you
47:34on this rally uh yeah on this rally we'll see over the whole world championship maybe it's a bit better
47:39well perhaps pirelli being caught out by the conditions of course neither johar kankinen
47:49nor richard burns particularly au fait with pirelli having driven on michelin over the last few
47:54years they go of course next to the safari rally which richard burns won last year wonder what he will
47:59do this time out well didier oriel now all attention on the battle between him and this man thomas
48:05radstrom into the final stage oriel 4.3 seconds behind and radstrom knowing that he has to give it
48:12absolutely everything in probably far less than perfect conditions on this final test
48:35the car is fantastic the handling is the weight is a little bit too much at the moment but uh later
48:42on the year we will see and even the engine
48:51well radstrom and gallagher waiting for the news of the other times
48:55was that about as quick as you can go
48:57i don't think you can go any quicker than that
49:04if you can he's well we know he's good but
49:14well the waiting must be almost as deadly for radstrom and gallagher as the chasing is
49:19for didier oriel and co-driver denis jiraday
49:30and how did he do the other times
49:34on the other hand
49:38left

49:5750 mètres, attention to the left, attention to the rebranchement, out, attention to the interior.
50:06Auriel cutting the corners and throwing the car all over the road in a desperate attempt to find,
50:13nearly five seconds on the final stage to take that third position.
50:19Frencreux, attention, Frencreux, attention, right, 5 plus arbres, Frencreux, attention, right, 5 plus arbres.
50:28110 mètres, attention, 5 plus a cord, 5 plus a cord, and it's the arrival, it's the arrival, it's the arrival, it's the arrival.
50:36Ah, it's a soud, my God! 52, 52, you've tried everything.
50:44Well, you've done all you can, said Denis Giriday.
50:47I've tried everything to cut everywhere.
50:50Sorry, Denis.
50:51Enough today?
50:52No, just a few.
51:02Fred Gallagher compares the times, and he knows that he and Radstrom are third, and Auriel and Girardet,
51:09you can just see the disappointment written all over their faces.
51:12Carlos Sainz second, not that happy either.
51:17We'll try to do something, because, as I said, this is getting boring.
51:20Thank you very much.
51:21For you, and for everybody.
51:23Not probably for them, but it's always the same story, so we have to try to change it.
51:28Which will be in Safari.
51:29Well, them, of course, being Tommy McKinnon and Mitsubishi.
51:35Carlos Sainz, rueful and humorous in defeat, as ever.
51:40Well, the winner in Sweden, as he was in Monte Carlo, the reigning champion, bandwagon, rolls on again.
51:47Mackinnon, Mitsubishi, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
51:52And they didn't.
51:53Yes, of course, I'm very happy.
51:55It's incredible, incredible feeling.
51:59And for Mitsubishi, a record equaling sixth world championship victory for the manufacturer in a row.
52:06Richard Burns, one, and Tommy McKinnon, five of those six wins.
52:12And that equals the performance of Lancia's Delta, back in the late 80s.
52:18But at this rate, I'm afraid, there's very little to suggest that Mitsubishi are that keen on stopping the trend,
52:25no matter how much Carlos Sainz might want to stop them.
52:28So there you go, Tommy McKinnon, Risto Madison Mackie, and the Mitsubishi, winners of the Swedish Rally 1999.
52:41And with a perfect 10 out of 10 score from the first two rounds of the championship,
52:46McKinnon has really launched his title defense in the best possible manner.
52:51Carlos Sainz coming up, 18.1 seconds short.
52:53Thomas Radstrom, a great third place.
52:56Didier Oriel, crushingly disappointed just to have fallen short of that podium place.
53:02But he scores points for Toyota in fourth place and for himself.
53:06Richard Burns and Juhar Kankinen both points scoring for Subaru.
53:10And even Bruno Thierry just in the top 10 with his car.
53:18Well, the driver standings then.
53:19McKinnon leading on 20 points.
53:22Oriel and Kankinen tied in second place.
53:25Carlos Sainz, third place after that second position here in Sweden, of course.
53:29No point from Monaco, from him though.
53:31Thomas Radstrom and Francois Delacour, courtesy of his result in Monte Carlo, fifth and sixth.
53:37But Mitsubishi leading from Toyota and Subaru.
53:40Seat and Ford also in the point scoring runners at the moment.
53:43Well, we focused on the overall battle, the Formula 2 and the Group N battles for drivers.
53:54But in Formula 2, the manufacturer series being led by Renault from Volkswagen.
53:59How soon though, before Hyundai really take up the challenge and clinch their first victory?
54:04It can't be long.
54:06Well, that's it from Rally Sweden. I hope you've enjoyed being with me over the last three nights.
54:12From Gilbert Wah, our producer down in the trenches, with Toby Moody on site in Sweden.
54:16And from me, Martin Haven, in the warmth of the studio.
54:20Thank you very much for watching.
54:21We'll be back with more World Rally Championship action, of course, from a very different climate.
54:26That of East Africa with the Safari, the Kenyan rally that is the car breaker, perhaps of all car breakers.
54:32February the 26th, 27th, 28th, another Friday.
54:35Some plans are?
54:40For me and I will be Material for the Diamond and the formeries on Vulcan.
54:45See the campaign members of the House at least 3 over again.
54:54This band is the Mirfey, the Blue and the Agency.
