00:00Alan, what are you doing?
00:04I'm recreating Newton's greatest discovery.
00:07Pop this on your head.
00:10Incoming.
00:14Alan, enough. Stop.
00:16Did you not listen to a word I said after rehearsal?
00:19You said Secret Genius is a serious show
00:22and I have to put some gravity in my performance.
00:25I said gravitas.
00:27Yes.
00:29Oh.
00:32Across the UK,
00:34there are estimated to be a million undiscovered geniuses.
00:38Calling all secret geniuses.
00:41Houses of Parliament here,
00:42we're not going to get any geniuses in there, are they?
00:45Ordinary people.
00:47When I was a kid,
00:48I used to know everybody's reg plate on a state where I lived.
00:51With extraordinary brains.
00:53Nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine, neon, sodium, magnesium, aluminium,
00:56silicon, I think the next one's phosphorus.
00:59Who have no idea just how clever they are.
01:03I had several teachers say to me,
01:04you'll never amount to anything,
01:05so if I can prove a point, let's do it.
01:10Nominated by friends, family or themselves.
01:13People see me and they don't think I'm capable of something like this.
01:17Am I doing this to prove anyone wrong?
01:18Absolutely.
01:19Each week, 12 people from different corners of the UK
01:25Complete the number sequence.
01:28Have been invited to Genius HQ.
01:31Oh my goodness.
01:34Here they'll compete in a series of mind-stretching games.
01:38Where do we begin?
01:39Designed with Mensa.
01:41The society for the world's smartest people.
01:45Ah!
01:46I've literally just figured it out.
01:47Last week...
01:48Oh my God, I've got it right.
01:50Nathan, Ollie and Justin made it through
01:53the North West and Northern Ireland hint.
01:57Cookies.
01:57We're through.
01:58Well done.
01:58Well played.
01:59Now it's the turn of our players from the North East and Scotland.
02:03Struggling here, aren't we?
02:04But which three will make it to the final?
02:07Oh my God!
02:08The winner of Secret Genius is...
02:13I think people sometimes think Vickers can be a bit daft and a bit silly
02:25and have their heads in the clouds.
02:26So this is about pushing at the boundaries of what I'm capable of.
02:30Today, 12 more high-IQ hopefuls will come here to Genius HQ.
02:38I'm a waitress and although I love the job at the restaurant,
02:41being a mum and wife,
02:44my brain still feels like it is craving a bit more than that.
02:48I don't know what though, that's the problem.
02:50Some of them might have an inkling they've got what it takes.
02:54Others will be as surprised to discover they're a secret genius
02:58as I would be to discover I have a talent for mixed martial arts.
03:04I like to look after people.
03:07I think I'm quite nurturing.
03:08And I don't think those are things that you see
03:10in people that you think are intelligent.
03:13I've got these fluffy skills,
03:15but it doesn't mean that everything's switched off here.
03:19Will one of these players have what it takes to make it to the top?
03:23And become Britain's first secret genius.
03:32I'm going to get the kettle on.
03:34I'll come help.
03:34Oh, we've got cups and saucers.
03:36Good as me, saucers.
03:38Nice to meet you. I'm Andy.
03:39Jess. Jess. Good deal.
03:41What made you decide to do this then?
03:44Being a lorry driver,
03:45I am part of an exclusive little group called Mother Truckers.
03:49Say it carefully.
03:50And they had a Facebook post up, basically.
03:55My brain has never really been stretched in the work environment.
04:02It's one of the miracles of my brain
04:04is that I can remember all the lyrics of all the songs
04:06from every tune in the 1980s.
04:08I do have a wide knowledge of ridiculous trivia.
04:11My hubby, bless him, doesn't like sitting next to me
04:14when I watch quizzes because I'll go...
04:16..the answer's such and such, and he gets bruised.
04:23Hello, everyone!
04:25Hello!
04:27Hey, how we doing?
04:29Yeah, good, thanks.
04:30Now, listen, we can all name hundreds of geniuses
04:33from the North East and Scotland.
04:35There's Alexander Graham Bell,
04:37John Logie Baird, Anton Deck.
04:39Mm-hm, yes.
04:40But are any of you fit enough
04:42to stand on the shoulders of those giants?
04:45You don't want me standing on anyone's shoulders.
04:47LAUGHTER
04:48So, listen, are you ready to meet my right-hand genius?
04:54Yes!
04:55Please welcome...
04:56Susie Dent!
04:57APPLAUSE
04:58Susie!
05:02Lovely to see you!
05:05Welcome!
05:06Now, your teachers may not have recognised your brain power,
05:10even though you may have a very high IQ.
05:13But in this competition,
05:15we're hopefully going to change that.
05:17Now, behind these doors
05:19are some of the most advanced intelligence games
05:21designed with Mensa
05:23on the test that they use to measure IQ.
05:26So, first of all,
05:27you are going to take part in two quick-fire games
05:30that you will have just 12 minutes to complete.
05:34After that, you will work in pairs,
05:36and we will be whittled down to just four players,
05:39and then the final game will determine
05:41who goes through to the final.
05:44Good luck.
05:45And see you later.
05:46Bye!
05:47Everyone else can just leave now with me.
05:49LAUGHTER
05:50All of a sudden, it becomes real.
05:53Yeah, a bit nervous now.
05:55I know, it's scary.
05:58So, Susie, what were they facing the first round?
06:02First test is about verbal intelligence.
06:06So, there are four sections to this wheel,
06:08and the players have to turn them around
06:10until they make six common words.
06:14The second test is all about pattern recognition.
06:16Two tiles have been placed incorrectly,
06:19so they need to identify
06:21the correct logical visual sequence
06:24and then swap around the two tiles
06:26until things are lined up correctly.
06:28Oh, and with the clock ticking,
06:29that is pressure.
06:32So, what about you guys?
06:34What do you do?
06:34We have a family restaurant.
06:36Oh, nice.
06:36A Greek restaurant.
06:37Do you smash a lot of plates?
06:38It depends how much Greek wine
06:40the customers drink, basically.
06:41Right, right, right, OK.
06:43And then we've got twins.
06:44They're going to university this year,
06:45so all changes.
06:47This is a big year for me
06:48with the boys leaving.
06:51There's a woman who's been a wife
06:52and had the two kids
06:53and devoted a lot of my life
06:55to household chores
06:56and looking after other people.
06:59The real me that was around
07:00before they were born,
07:02it's hard to remember her.
07:04That can make me sad sometimes.
07:09Family came along
07:11and then the business came along
07:12and then it's kind of 20 years
07:14has skipped past
07:15and I'm suddenly 44.
07:20Selena!
07:20Go on, Selena!
07:21Go on, Selena!
07:23Restaurant manager Selena
07:25is first to face the quickfire round.
07:29I'm ready to find out
07:31who I am when I'm not the waitress
07:33and mother.
07:34Selena, let's see how she does
07:37with this one
07:38because two very different skills
07:40required here,
07:41so you're going to need to be
07:42pretty balanced in your brain power.
07:55Rotate the wheels
07:56until all of the letters align
07:57to create six common words
07:59of four letters each
08:00when you've finished
08:01moving to the next room.
08:04OK, just stop and think a minute.
08:07I spot there's a K
08:09as one of the last letters
08:10so I'm thinking
08:11that's an uncommon letter
08:13so I'm going to start with that.
08:15I said the only thing before K
08:16could be an S or an R.
08:19Good.
08:19So the inner circle
08:21has got a K in it
08:23and it's got a P in it.
08:24Not many words end in K
08:25so I would look for that one first
08:27and then everything else
08:28might slot into place.
08:31I'm thinking
08:31you can have no double Ks,
08:33no double Rs
08:34and things like that
08:35and just discount
08:35what it couldn't be.
08:37OK, yes, there can't be an R and an R.
08:41There could be an RK,
08:43there could be an SS.
08:44Lark.
08:46Some of the words
08:47will be spelled out
08:48looking as if they're correct
08:50but then the others
08:51won't match.
08:53So there are some
08:55real red herrings
08:56and some real distractions here.
08:58Door.
09:00No.
09:03Locked or loud,
09:04trap, fast, bust.
09:06Yes.
09:08Well done.
09:09Amazing.
09:09Yeah.
09:10Super speedy.
09:11That sounds right.
09:13I feel quite confident
09:14that it's correct.
09:15Now she needs to quickly
09:16move on to the next.
09:20OK.
09:22Two of the tiles
09:22have been placed incorrectly.
09:24Complete the mosaic sequence
09:26by swapping these two tiles.
09:28Press the stop button
09:29to finish the test.
09:30OK.
09:31Well,
09:33three blue flowery things.
09:35I start by having a look
09:37if there's something
09:37really obvious,
09:38which there is not.
09:40Mmm.
09:41These are the most simple ones.
09:43These tiles are giving me
09:44Greek taverna vibes.
09:47I'll have two massacres
09:48and a bottle of ouzo,
09:49one straw.
09:50I'm guessing they might
09:51add together maybe?
09:53She's on the right lines.
09:54Some of these sequences
09:55are already correct
09:56and they will give you the clue.
09:59This is that one
10:00and that one added together.
10:02I can see that
10:02different tiles
10:04will add up together
10:05to make other tiles,
10:06but my brain
10:07is just not clicking
10:07into which one is correct.
10:10So the one that has
10:10everything is that one,
10:13but that doesn't make
10:14any sense.
10:15Hold on.
10:16Mmm.
10:18I'm feeling
10:19a little bit panicky.
10:21I'm aware
10:22there's a clock ticking.
10:26Oh.
10:28Oh, well done.
10:29That one, that one,
10:31and that one added together.
10:32That way would make sense.
10:34Oh, well done.
10:46She's got it right.
10:48I think that's okay.
10:49Amazing.
10:50Yeah.
10:50This is a tough one,
10:51isn't it?
10:52It is a tough one.
10:54So do you see,
10:55if you take the top left,
10:56you've got the star.
10:57Going down,
10:58you'll have the space
10:59in which the star fits
11:00and then you'll have
11:01the whole picture
11:01at the bottom.
11:02And left to right,
11:03the third one
11:04is the sum of the first two.
11:06Ah.
11:08Yeah.
11:09I'm happy with that.
11:17What brought you here then?
11:18Just a lot of things
11:19like getting called
11:20like dumb
11:20and an idiot and stuff.
11:21Really?
11:22Oh, no.
11:24People kind of judge me
11:26based on how I look.
11:27I think I've experienced
11:28being underestimated
11:29like as a woman
11:30in just like in jobs
11:32and by like friends
11:33and family
11:33and in lots of different settings.
11:35I don't have much
11:36common sense,
11:37but like...
11:38My friends like
11:39say that I'm so ditzy.
11:42I wanted to do this
11:43to then show
11:44like 14-year-old me
11:46that you can do it.
11:48So there's a bloke
11:50we get eccentric.
11:51You get ditzy.
11:53That's kind of unkind.
11:54Little do they know.
12:00Right, let's see
12:01what the other players
12:03can do.
12:06This is John.
12:08He's sort of looking round
12:09like he wants to buy
12:09the place, isn't he?
12:10Like, hmm, I'll take it.
12:13Create six common words.
12:15Of four letters each.
12:16I think I want to put that.
12:18There.
12:19I see the letter K.
12:20I think that's a good place
12:21to start.
12:22Four letter words.
12:23This could be dangerous
12:24for a priest, couldn't it?
12:26Ahmed, he'd be good
12:27for Movember, wouldn't he?
12:29I've got no testosterone.
12:31I have to start in April.
12:32Come on, you're doing this
12:33for Manchester.
12:35Oh, we're struggling here,
12:37aren't we?
12:37She's gone over halfway through
12:38and she hasn't done this.
12:41Dark boss fast trap.
12:42Yes.
12:43Well done, Jess.
12:44I'm just gonna lock this in.
12:47It's not right, look.
12:47She didn't complete that one
12:49but she locked it in.
12:50Complete the mosaic sequence.
12:51It's by swapping two tiles.
12:53What is that?
12:54Come on, Graham.
12:57Nope.
12:58Red one.
13:01Now here she reminds me of.
13:04Me?
13:05Yes, those cheekbones,
13:06those glasses.
13:07This could be a mirror.
13:08And this one,
13:10that one, that one,
13:11that one.
13:11That one, that one,
13:12that one.
13:12Yes.
13:13Doing both games
13:14in two minutes 44.
13:17Remarkable.
13:17Brings a whole new meaning
13:18to Godspeed.
13:22John's superpowers.
13:26It seemed too easy.
13:27Wow.
13:284-11.
13:29How about that?
13:31Ah!
13:34No, no, no.
13:36No.
13:37I don't think it's right.
13:39That is it.
13:41Now we need to press the button.
13:44Go, go, go.
13:45Yeah, leave the feng shui.
13:49Oh, this is agonising.
13:51He's hovering.
13:53Ahmed!
13:55Yes!
13:57He kept us hanging there,
13:59didn't he?
13:59He did.
14:01I think sometimes
14:02it doesn't matter
14:03how often people tell you
14:05you're very intelligent.
14:07Internally,
14:07you don't necessarily
14:08believe them
14:09and you think,
14:09yeah.
14:10Yeah.
14:11Who have you got
14:11working for you at home?
14:13So,
14:14my dad put me forward
14:15and
14:16I honestly
14:17don't think I'm a genius.
14:19The final player
14:20to attempt
14:21the quickfire round
14:22is 45-year-old Andy.
14:24I've never been unemployed.
14:26I've always gone
14:26from job to job
14:27and been sought after
14:29in some cases.
14:30So, for the first time
14:31in my life at 45
14:31I'm finding myself unemployed
14:33and I'm finding it
14:33really difficult.
14:35Cost of living-wise,
14:36I've just had to move
14:37back here with my mum
14:37and the last job
14:38I applied for
14:39there were 841
14:40other applicants.
14:41It's frustrating
14:42and I think
14:43that sort of
14:44affects your self-worth.
14:45my confidence is gone.
14:49There's a
14:50nagging voice in my head
14:51that keeps saying
14:51like,
14:52I'm not good enough.
14:53I guess that's why
14:54I'm here as well,
14:55part of like
14:55a crossroads.
14:59Andy!
15:01You're going.
15:02Good luck, buddy.
15:05Doing this competition
15:07I want to show myself
15:08that I have got
15:09a bit of intelligence
15:09and I can achieve things
15:11and maybe that
15:12can improve my self-worth.
15:13This is Andy.
15:16He sort of just wants
15:17a bit of validation here.
15:19It will buoy him up
15:20if he needs it.
15:25Sorry, take the reels.
15:29Take the reels.
15:35The letters are not moving.
15:37I'm thinking I'm lost.
15:39I've got no idea
15:40what to do.
15:41Come on, Andy.
15:48Just doubt
15:50it kicks in.
15:52You're not going
15:53to do this in time
15:53and 12 minutes
15:54isn't enough.
15:56Oh, don't get disheartened.
15:58You've got this.
15:59Come on.
16:04Come on, Maria.
16:05School was a funny time
16:20for me.
16:21I don't know how
16:21was it for you.
16:22Well, yeah,
16:22I got expelled
16:23in year nine.
16:24Oh, wow.
16:25Yeah.
16:25I pinched the art
16:26teachers' bunch of cues
16:28and then during
16:29the school holidays
16:29I just went
16:30and let myself
16:31in the school
16:32and took all
16:32the chocolate
16:32out of the touch
16:33and I just...
16:3412 hopefuls
16:36from the north-eastern
16:37Scotland
16:37are taking on
16:39a series of games
16:40based on the test
16:41Mensa use
16:42to measure intelligence.
16:48Come on, Andy.
16:49You've got this.
16:5145-year-old Andy
16:53is the last player
16:54to attempt
16:55Wheel of Words.
16:58Yes.
16:58Yes.
16:59Yes, he's got it.
17:01Things start to click.
17:02I'm thinking,
17:03I can do this.
17:04I can do this.
17:05Dog.
17:06Nope.
17:07Let's try it last.
17:11Trap.
17:12Lost.
17:12Fast.
17:13Oh, my goodness.
17:14No way.
17:15That was so fast.
17:17Complete the mosaic sequence
17:18by swapping these two tiles.
17:23Look how quickly
17:23his eyes are roving
17:24those tiles.
17:26It starts basic
17:27but it adds something
17:27each time.
17:29Yes.
17:29That's it.
17:34Yes.
17:35Wow.
17:36Yeah.
17:38Chop myself.
17:39Yeah.
17:42That was fast.
17:43Well done, Andy.
17:44Yay!
17:50Oh, buddy.
17:52Question, Andy.
17:52Are you up there?
17:55It's done.
17:56You can kind of relax
17:57a little bit now.
17:58You don't know
17:59that you're going to go through.
17:59It's kind of like one of those
18:01did you get the job?
18:03Yeah.
18:04It's like the results now.
18:05Yeah, we'll be in touch.
18:08Hi, guys.
18:10Hi.
18:10What did you think of the games?
18:12I think we might be saying
18:13goodbye, Alan.
18:14Don't say that.
18:16How can I lose
18:17my sister from another mystery?
18:19Absolutely.
18:19But we do have to lose
18:22some of you, okay?
18:24So in no particular order,
18:26this is the people
18:27going through.
18:29Simon.
18:30Nick.
18:35Jess.
18:37opaths.
18:38Ahmed.
18:41Jodi.
18:44John.
18:47Selina.
18:50And the final person
18:55going through is...
18:57Andy that of course means the people going home are Melanie Graham Joe and
19:10Debs oh I'm sorry I know I could have done better come here Debs I ran out of
19:18brain you ran out of brain but I found my tribe Debs come on love your
19:26lorries double parked to come across anyone who is of a similar brain level
19:35to me similar ideas thoughts and feelings is rare to have a whole room of
19:41them is it's just astonishing and it makes you feel understood it's quite warm
19:48fluffy feeling I like it can I get some advice from you guys yeah more
19:52confidence in yourself make it through I feel very lucky and I'm quite proud of
19:58myself as well it can be so yeah right you lot you need to go home eat some oily
20:05fish and rest those brains because things are gonna get tougher
20:10it's day two in genius HQ and just eight players remain hey dad see you know this
20:25thing you push me into yeah I'm really enjoying it cheers for pushing me how are you feeling about
20:32today then I'm just scared scared of not doing well hi guys now for the next game
20:40you're gonna be in pairs you can pick which page you want to be in the one who
20:46was quickest in the quickfire round will pick first so Nick that's you I was really
20:56excited to see that I finished top of the leaderboard for the first round and I was
20:59kind of daunted at having to pick Jess oh that makes me feel real nice yeah oh that's good yeah
21:06wonderful I got pink first I mean that never happened to me in PA the next quickest is John
21:16right who are you gonna pick Andy okay Selina I love you but I'm trying to make sure all the
21:28girls get a chance to get through girls to the finals this theory I would like to get a girl
21:32through to the final so out of four teams there's a girl on three teams so statistically like there'll
21:38be a girl in the final now yeah I'll have a day off love I know you're a genius but you're even
21:46thinking tactically when you're picking I love it you're on the right show okay great I'm gonna go
21:52share with Ahmad so that means Jody and Simon are you happy about this I am indeed it's giving me
22:00gladiator vibes I'm about to feel it contenders ready so you're in your teams the two fastest pairs will
22:09be staying the two slowest pairs sorry babes you're going home so you're feeling okay this morning yeah
22:30I feel very good now ingenious HQ the remaining eight players have now paired up to face the second
22:39round together don't let me down you said you work in I mean I work in retail do your parents ever say
22:48anything about that day in day out yeah really yeah of course my parents doctors my sister's a dentist
22:55brother he works as a consultant I'm a bit behind in that sense I think I've always felt a bit isolated
23:03not being able to keep up you know you're kind of at the back of the pack my dad's still all with me
23:08like you'd make a great doctor then you're both a sage milk I'm just like guys just get it through your
23:12head it's never gonna happen I came here to prove to my family that I'm not black sheep I do believe
23:19that I have potential I just need to I guess find it Susie I'm not gonna lie this pairs round looks baffling
23:31so the pairs are going to split up so that one stands on either side of the puzzle there are eight
23:36words to figure out here they've been given their definitions and their anagrams and they need to pair
23:42them up but of course there's a catch sometimes both definition and anagram are on the same side
23:48when they work out the matching clues it will pull a wire to link the two but the final question
23:55is the killer one I think how many triangles have been formed there's a time limit of 15 minutes
24:02almost tough Ahmed and Selena
24:06you must connect the wires from each anagram to its matching description once you've connected the wires
24:14you must work out how many triangles big and small are contained within the frame okay I'm immediately
24:22scanning both sides I can see there's anagrams I can see the description a vibrant pinkish purple color
24:28that's more vibrant than pink but warmer than purple my eyes dart to the top left fuchsia that was really
24:35quick two refracting telescopes mounted side by side binoculars probably wow in my head I was thinking
24:42I'm glad I chose him because we're on the same wavelength here I've got input device that allows users to type
24:47characters and perform functions so like keyboard or something like that I guess oh I've got people
24:52on this oh you want people yeah I thought they were gonna be opposite oh they're racing through this
24:56one this is impressive a small two-winged insect with long legs and a soft body kind of mosquito oh
25:02my goodness he's not mucking about is he I've got a soft silvery white alkali metal oh wait lithium
25:09is lithium yeah well done Selena good isn't it a deep cylindrical vessel with a flat bottom and a
25:17semi-circular bale for collecting carrying bucket bucket yeah yeah oh she's so impressive a soft usually
25:26cloth bag filled with a yielding material oh cushion well done he just looks at those anagrams and knows
25:32the answers where's cushion come from uh it's from the french cuisson oh cuisson not the thing you
25:40have for breakfast I know the difference between a cushion and a croissant this croissant's got a load of
25:46feathers in it one anagram left s-t-a-c-i-a-t-w-o waistcoat yes I'm actually thinking of going to a
25:59restaurant if she brings the food out as quickly as she does these parcels wow okay the next stage is
26:05that we have to count the triangles should we just be quiet for a minute and just see what we get let's
26:09analyze first yeah but what does this test good point diagrammatic visualization this one the best
26:16way in is to identify the different sizes of triangles and then count them three four five
26:23yeah small I'm thinking let's count small triangles the middle then bigger I'm torn between 11 and 12
26:33well I think I found 12 so far so yeah I said let's go with 12 I'm very confident she knows the answer
26:39so she's really really smart yes that's the correct answer wow they were great team it was fun like I almost
26:48kind of want to do another one I know so Alan there are seven big triangles and then five smaller ones
26:57add them together and you get 12 it's time for the other three pairs to find out whether a problem
27:06shared is a problem halved yeah and half the players Alan are gonna go after the next game we're gonna go from
27:12eight to four yeah I know what half is but thanks for explaining it I was feeling quite nervous but Nick's quite like
27:20loud and confident I think that might help in the teamwork game he just might not understand my accent so
27:24just sort of gets the same kind of stuff I do there just because you're beautiful they think you're
27:32stupid an input device that allows users to type characters and perform functions I think I have
27:39a keyboard here yes well done to have a description up there Jandy Jandy yeah Andy and John I've got
27:46like a bromance going on b-y-k-o-d b-y-k there's too much information there we're trying to share too much
27:54information a soft usually cloth bag hessian maybe no vibrant pinkish purple color fuchsia fuchsia
28:03perfect that was fast two refracting trexar scopes mounted side by side yeah binoculars but mate if I
28:10was to try and pronounce it choice stucky arts whoa that does not help me come until yeah you're right
28:19it doesn't help us it took seed to you in waistcoat yeah that's it that's the last one that's so fast
28:28but now they've got to do the triangles you better count triangles I've got faith in you how would you
28:33get seven what is yoga I've been nine each time we're counting them we're coming up with a different
28:39number eight ten I got ten then I got eleven like if we lose we lose together but I trust you I don't
28:46trust me eleven it's all good oh wait that's seven seven yeah plus five so the twelve yeah pretty much
28:55yes yes that one I don't want it well well done the anagrams will haunt me for life
29:05so you look like two naughty boys who've done something really cheekily amazing and are desperate to tell us
29:16I'm afraid of letting John down but I should do it pretty quickly I think I hope so you've been
29:29crossing wires well I hope now you're crossing fingers in no particular order the first pair going through to
29:38the final round is Selina and Ahmed the next pair going through is Nick and Jess my well time
30:00that of course means we need to say goodbye to Simon and Joe and Andy and John you have done so well but
30:18it was the speed that let you down gotta say your goodbyes I doubt myself constantly I'll be honest
30:33with you for the past couple of days it's disappeared as of all I have a brilliant experience with these
30:40people right incredible I'm gonna go home and thank my dad for pushing me into this how much more nerve-wracking
30:48than I think yes I had plans to work tonight I wasn't expecting to get this far so now I'm gonna
30:55have to call and rearrange the restaurant a little bit to make sure that I can keep going
30:59hey QD that was a lot tougher I'm feeling more and more confident like the further we're getting
31:17through ingenious HQ four players remain but only three will make it through to our finals in Oxford
31:25sweetheart oh thank you that's the name of the game we're about to play so players begin by studying
31:36the triangle of Turkish delight so they have to take in as much information as they can Turkish delight is
31:43the art department on a day off there are questions in the next room have to answer those correctly and
31:49then move on yet again and in the final room which is all about verbal reasoning there are five sweet
31:54jars on each is a clue and the answer to that clue will be the name of the sweet and they have 30 minutes
32:00on the clock do you think intelligence it's like a nature versus no it's an interesting question isn't it
32:11I mean I think getting the input when you're young that from parents like I think that makes a big
32:14difference yeah I didn't really like kind of have that as a kid you like self-motivated yeah I guess
32:20but it came from the kind of shows and things I'd watch or like the games I'd play yeah it's kind of
32:27hard when it feels like gatekeeped in a way for poor people like yeah I think like poorer people tend
32:34to get less opportunities and time to actually start learning and then showing that they're
32:40intelligent I feel like there's a lot of untapped potential in the world definitely as well like
32:46being women do you find that men kind of like judge you oh yeah definitely yeah 27 year old Jess is the
32:55first player to face the final round I think if I went through to the next stage it would prove people
33:02wrong since I've been called like dumb and an idiot in the past and like you know over mean things and
33:06it would just raise my self-confidence oh Jess is a real smart cookie yeah let's see how she does with
33:21this one memorize the details of this stack of text light when you are ready you must move on to the
33:28next room your first question can be found on the jar I see sweets in a colored order and I'm trying
33:41to memorize what's there she has studied slow the jar that displays the correct color pattern of the
33:52Turkish delight green yellow blue green yellow blue green red yellow yeah yes well done quick eyes select
34:07the jar that displays a number of cubes in the Turkish light tower oh god this is about spatial reasoning
34:13because you have to imagine the depth of this pile of time yeah yeah yeah so you'd count up the sides
34:18wouldn't you yeah though it's an awkward it is you've got to imagine how far back it goes yeah I got a
34:25general vibe that it was definitely over a hundred isn't 144 like 12 times 12 I didn't think that would
34:34make sense for how the cubes were stacked correct no way wow you get the impression she amazes herself
34:46work out each puzzle incorrectly identify which three should go into the jar okay it seems to be
34:56weird puzzles which isn't my strong suit so I'm a bit scared so A equals Z Z equals A to working backwards Z Y W and Y Z
35:09sure it's T I just got the T U is toffee toffee toffee well done so this is reversing the order of the alphabet so
35:22A B C D E F G is seven letters from the beginning that's your seven letters from the end it's T I will give you O
35:29and so on yeah my neighbors are N J O U why not and my neighbors are mint oh she just looked at that
35:42continuous traces of jam elderflower jelly ooh jelly very good we're looking for a verbal sequence jelly
35:52what jelly bean I think it's the first letter of each word war worms yes oh wow that was impressive
36:02so jam is J L the flower is E lime lemon oh jelly worms jelly worms I get it now the seven is like an L
36:14oh L L lemon she makes it up so easy doesn't she lemon drop I like she got that so quickly so you'll see
36:31there's a number above you have to tilt the numbers just certain angles to create letters and then you'll
36:36be able to spell lemon drop that is tough what am I squirrel minus question what yeah so that is the
36:47trickiest question oh look at the sweets marshmallows
36:51yes wow
37:03go with that well done that was amazing verbal reasoning so you take two letters out of squirrel yeah
37:14you take the air you take the air so yes off take off one of the Oz licorice oh yeah
37:26the next two players are Nick and Selena it means a lot to me to get this far since starting this
37:34competition I've kind of got this like tiny growing dream that when the boys come back home with their
37:38degrees I might have my certificate to say I'm also smart
37:41I'm just going to go for this one
37:42Selina she's really quick she has been really impressive all the way through okay so we've got a
37:49green stack it's interesting to see how long they study this Turkish delight for I'm just gonna go
37:55they have up to a max of five minutes she gone super speedy the jar that displays the correct
38:02the number of cubes in the tower it was seven by seven I'm gonna go okay I'm looking at it for a couple of seconds going that's can't be right but it is super super skilled
38:09correct you can now move on to the next stream he's done it
38:11hallelujah
38:12hallelujah
38:13hallelujah contains traces of okay so I'm going to go fast select the jar that displays the number
38:14of cubes in the tower it was seven by seven I'm gonna go okay I'm looking at it for a couple of seconds going that's can't be right but it is
38:26it is super super skilled
38:31correct you can now move on to the next stream he's done it hallelujah
38:40contains traces of okay so there's letters in there Nick come on
38:44okay this is obviously jelly worms obviously Alan I love that obviously
38:50jelly worms there we go my neighbors are
38:54okay that's mint
38:57spot-on
38:58look at that she's whizzing through these
39:00T-U-V-W toffee
39:02this game is going really well I'm looking at the keys and my brain has kind of solved it before I've even
39:08like thought about it
39:10now we're cooking on gas
39:12so seven rotate 180 clockwise
39:16lemon drop
39:18that was so fast
39:20squirrel minus something something plus O-I-C
39:24oh my god why is this not obvious
39:27licorice
39:29where does licorice come from
39:31licorice
39:32yeah
39:33I've completely forgot where licorice comes from
39:35oh you are an idiot
39:36come on Nick
39:37take out the Q and the U because they might not be that easy
39:41okay just take a breath
39:43this is silly I'm stressing
39:45oh I'd want it to fall at the last hurdle
39:47oh god that's so annoying
39:50and my mind is just blank
39:53oh licorice
39:56yes yes yes he's done it
39:58oh I see
39:59even if I kick myself on this one I'd rather just try for the time
40:04what's she gone for
40:07chocolate
40:10chocolate
40:11aww
40:12it was all really easy like really easy until just one blank
40:18so it's just a bit frustrating but I'm fine I'll be fine
40:23it's a lot of emotions
40:25um
40:28just because I didn't think I would get this far and now I got this far I was like
40:34it would be nice to just do the final step
40:36that was a toughie
40:42are you confident you'd be one of the three
40:43no
40:44no I'm not confident
40:46really
40:46last to play is phone shop assistant Ahmed
40:54doing this experience has definitely boosted my confidence
40:57it's showing me I am capable of more and I can actually achieve more
41:01I would really like to go to the finals and potentially even win
41:06Ahmed let's see how he gets on
41:10he was extraordinary in the pairs round
41:11he was he's from a family of high flyers and I think he really wants to prove
41:16he's just as intelligent as them
41:18okay select the jar that displays the correct colour pattern of the Turkish delight
41:23I think it's this one
41:27you're so quick
41:30that was very quick
41:31select the jar that displays the number of cubes in the Turkish delight tower
41:35yes
41:45yes
41:45that was one of the fastest we've had
41:47yes
41:48okay
41:48contains traces of a jam, elderflower, lime, lemon, so
41:52usually
41:53raspberry and
41:54that could be anything
41:57that's them
41:58what's he doing with the till
42:05no
42:06probably not
42:07okay
42:08squirrel minus question mark
42:10plus OIC
42:12I have an immediate mind blank
42:16it may as well be French
42:19rotate 180 clockwise
42:21am I supposed to rotate myself
42:23clockwise
42:24yeah I can't flip vertically now
42:31oh Ahmed
42:33he's not quite sure what he's supposed to do
42:35is that from any of these jars
42:38okay
42:40you're not supposed to go back to those jars Ahmed
42:42hey hey hey hey
42:46you can't try before you buy
42:48what
42:51Ahmed
42:52what is this
42:56breathe Ahmed
42:58he's panicking isn't he
42:59he's panicking isn't he
43:03I'm opening all these lids
43:04and they aren't giving me any hints
43:06ugh
43:09well we lose points for not being able to open this
43:13oh no don't drop the jar
43:17there's no logic here there's no strategy here
43:19oh I think the pressure's getting to him do you think he's crumbling
43:24I think it's crumbling
43:25yay
43:29Turkish Delight
43:31ugh
43:36no way
43:38he's got licorice right
43:39yeah
43:40so I think he just took a punt on that
43:45no idea with this one
43:46aww
43:47that was so bad
43:57I found some of it impossible
43:59feel like your brain is burnt out like now at this moment
44:02it is just
44:03zero percent capacity now that's it
44:04battery is dead
44:05I feel like there's just a bit of grey mush knocking about between your ears yeah
44:08grey mush?
44:09I was thinking like air more like
44:12that's my little clever clog
44:16I know who thought standing in a sweet shop could be so terrifying
44:19aww
44:20yeah yeah

45:59that's like mine and Susie's combined
46:02I'm still a bit in shock that I'm here
46:05it's meant so much to come and do this
46:07because even though the real me is still the mother and wife
46:10it's making me feel like I have potential to be more than that in my life
46:13and be more fulfilled
46:15literally still processing it now and thinking
46:18it doesn't feel real
46:21with this talented trio joining the ranks
