00:00Susie, you know we're looking for a secret genius.
00:07Yeah.
00:08What does a secret genius look like?
00:10Well, that's the thing. They don't have to look or be like anyone.
00:13Could they be plump and maybe be a classic pair?
00:16Sure.
00:17Could they be slightly thinning at the back, you know, in the hair department?
00:21Absolutely.
00:22Could their teeth maybe not be the best?
00:24Why not?
00:25Susie, are you saying I could be a secret genius?
00:28Oh.
00:30And I wouldn't say classic pair.
00:38Across the UK, there are estimated to be a million undiscovered geniuses.
00:44Calling all secret geniuses.
00:47As is a parliament here, we're not going to get any geniuses in there, are they?
00:51Ordinary people.
00:53When I was a kid, I used to know everybody's reg plate aren't a state where I lived.
00:57With extraordinary brains.
00:59Nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine, neon, sodium, magnesium, aluminium, silicon, I think the next one's phosphorus.
01:05Who have no idea just how clever they are.
01:08I got about four GCSEs.
01:11But somewhere deep down, I reckon I've got some kind of hidden potential.
01:15Nominated by friends, family or themselves.
01:18People see me and they don't think I'm capable of something like this.
01:23Am I doing this to prove anyone wrong?
01:24Absolutely.
01:25Each week, 12 people from different corners of the UK...
01:30Complete the number sequence.
01:32...have been invited to Genius HQ.
01:36Oh, my goodness.
01:38Here they'll compete in a series of mind-stretching games...
01:40Where do we begin?
01:42...designed with Nensa, the society for the world's smartest people.
01:46I've literally just figured it out.
01:49Straight in, superpowers.
01:51To find out if they have more potential than they ever thought possible.
01:55Oh, my God.
01:56I got it right.
01:57Come on, you're doing this for Manchester.
01:58Maybe I am clever.
01:59But only the top three from each regional heat will make it to the final.
02:00Oh, my God.
02:01The winner of Secret Genius is...
02:02The winner of Secret Genius is...
02:25I'm a receptionist for a hotel chain.
02:29People 100% underestimate me.
02:32Some of them just think you're a minimum wage moron.
02:36Hello, and welcome to Secret Genius.
02:39Today, it's the good people of the North West and Northern Ireland...
02:43...who might always have suspected they have sky-high IQs...
02:46...but have remained as untested as the set of skeets...
02:49...my mum and dad bought me for my 14th birthday.
02:52When I was at school, I was labelled as being thick.
02:56I'm kind of thinking, you know, I am reasonably clever.
02:59Fingers crossed I can prove that I'm not as thick as the school teachers said.
03:03Will someone's grey matter come good when it matters...
03:06...and see them lift the Secret Genius crown?
03:09Hello.
03:10My name's CJ.
03:11Nice to meet you all.
03:12I've never done it like this before. Have you?
03:15No.
03:16I've never even done an intelligence test or anything like that.
03:19So I'm kind of just trusting that I won't regret doing this.
03:21It's good to push yourself out of the common zone.
03:23They've been out again though, isn't it?
03:25Have you had to come far?
03:26Oh, I've come from Telford.
03:28Have you ever been?
03:29I haven't.
03:30Well, you're not missing out, to be fair.
03:31What do you do for work?
03:33I work on an ambulance crew.
03:34Amazing!
03:35I'm a single mum.
03:37I work nights.
03:38I respond to 999 calls.
03:40Oh, I bet that's high pressure, though.
03:42It can be.
03:43It can be.
03:44I seem to be able to pull things out of my arse from nowhere.
03:49Pretty well remember all our patients' details.
03:52Name address, next of kin, phone number, date of birth, allergies.
03:56What do you do for work?
03:57I'm a dance teacher and run a dance school.
03:59Amazing!
04:00Oh, my God.
04:02Dance has always been in me.
04:03I've been dancing since I was three.
04:05I can't do as much as I used to do in terms of teaching.
04:08The hips and the feet are failing.
04:10The brain's not yet, so what can it do?
04:12What do you do for a living?
04:14I'm a shepherd.
04:15That's what I do for money.
04:16I wasn't expecting such a diverse group of people.
04:19I was expecting a bit more lab coats and lecturers and that.
04:22Do you work with sheepdogs?
04:24I have a sheepdog.
04:25Can a dog be a genius?
04:27Hi, guys!
04:30How are you all feeling?
04:33Yeah!
04:35You are representing North West and Northern Ireland.
04:38Who's got the thickest accent?
04:40Come on.
04:41Probably me.
04:42I am really common.
04:43You're really common.
04:44Oh, my God, so am I.
04:46But listen, you're thinking, how can he be in charge?
04:50And you're right.
04:51We need a responsible adult.
04:53And until we find one of them, let's welcome resident brain box,
04:57Miss Susie Dent.
04:58Oh, Susie's come all the way from 1978.
05:04Look at that.
05:06Woo!
05:07Gone.
05:08Ooh.
05:09Ooh, love it.
05:10Anyway, welcome.
05:11Now, for some of you, the school system may not have helped you reach your full potential,
05:16even though you may have a very high IQ.
05:19But in this competition, we're hopefully going to change that.
05:23Behind these doors are some spectacular but slightly devilish games.
05:28These have all been designed with Mensa based on the tests that they use to measure intelligence.
05:34So today, we are going to be putting you to the test with two quick fire rounds.
05:39Which you will have 12 minutes to complete.
05:42And the bottom four of you will be going home.
05:45Followed by a pairs round in which you will need to team up and collaborate.
05:48But only the top two pairs will be going through to the next round.
05:53Yes, so have a little look around and see who you think is your intellectual match, okay?
05:57You don't look impressed.
06:00And then three of you will go through to the final.
06:04Are you ready for your first game?
06:06Yeah.
06:07I'll be watching.
06:08Don't let that put you off.
06:09You got this, okay?
06:11Woo!
06:12Yeah!
06:13Fist pump!
06:14Stop being so common.
06:19That was a lot.
06:23Deep breaths, CJ.
06:24Deep breaths.
06:25So, Susie, what are we actually testing here, then?
06:29Well, each of these games has been designed with Mensa to test our players more intelligence
06:34and the instinctual workings of their brain.
06:40So, across the four heats, each player must try to complete each game correctly
06:44in the fastest time possible.
06:46And in today's quick fire round, only the top eight players will make it through.
06:51What was it that brought you here?
06:55My friends always kind of say, like, oh, Jo's a genius.
06:58When this came up, I was like, oh, do you think I should do this?
07:01And she's like, well, yeah.
07:02That's so interesting because I think a few of us have been recommended by someone else.
07:06I don't know if there's a thing there about maybe we don't see ourselves as anything special,
07:10but someone else does.
07:11For me, it was my mum.
07:12She's my biggest fan of my mum.
07:14Bless her.
07:16Nathan!
07:17Go on, Nathan!
07:19Go on, Nathan.
07:21Carlisle-born Nathan is first to take on the quick fire round.
07:26My brain is like someone sellotaped together a load of wires
07:31and then struck them with lightning.
07:33Now, that can sound a little bit like a terrible thing, absolute chaos.
07:38Sometimes it is chaos, but I feel like it means there's also a lot of potential in there.
07:43Tell me a bit about Nathan.
07:44Well, he's from Carlisle.
07:46Bullied at school, self-confessed nerd.
07:48Nerds are cool.
07:49They are cool.
07:50You know, the first use of nerd was in Dr. Seuss when I ran the zoo.
07:52Do you remember the Dr. Seuss book?
07:53Yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:54He devised this weird animal called a nerd.
07:57Is that where it comes from?
07:58That's where we got it all from.
07:59Okay.
08:00Geeks used to bite their heads off live chickens, but that's another story.
08:06I am certainly different, whether that's good or bad.
08:10Maybe this will help me find out.
08:18Let's go.
08:19All the months of the year can be spelled with these letters apart from one.
08:27That month has one letter missing.
08:29Which letter is missing and from which month?
08:32On the surface, quite straightforward.
08:34So every single month of the year can be spelled with these letters bar one.
08:39Oh, Susie, imagine all the people at home playing along.
08:43Because you can.
08:44I'm watching you.
08:46That's a lot of letters.
08:48So, what this is testing is our players' ability to process and interpret written information.
08:54So, this is what we call verbal reasoning.
08:57I think, right, how am I going to do this?
08:59And the first thing that comes to me is just go through them one by one.
09:03January, I've got J-A-N.
09:06He's going through this systematically, Nathan.
09:09It might be the longer approach.
09:10You go January, February.
09:11Is there an M?
09:12Is there an A-Y?
09:13See, some people might just go in and have an incredibly quick scan.
09:17March.
09:18I'm not seeing a H at the moment.
09:21I'm just going to scan backwards again.
09:24What you do is I think of all the months and think of letters that jump out.
09:29Yeah, that is exactly the right strategy.
09:31Look, the least common letter, like the I in April, the F in February, the H in March,
09:36that's where to start.
09:38I found the H.
09:39Lesser used ones.
09:40Yes, yeah.
09:41That's a really good way to go.
09:42I have an answer.
09:44The key is they have to write both the letter down and the month.
09:47I'm pretty confident with my answer.
09:49Well done, Nathan.
09:50He got there in 4 minutes 38.
09:52That is a really solid start.
09:54Get on to the next game.
09:55Time's clicking.
10:00Place the shapes in the correct positions on the grid
10:03to ensure each line adds up to the given value.
10:06You must keep all the numbers on the blocks facing the right way up.
10:10You must press the stop button to finish.
10:12They have to arrange different numbers so that each row matches the total on the left-hand side.
10:19OK.
10:20So, 11, 15, 20, 26.
10:22So now we're testing our players' ability to think logically and solve new problems.
10:27So this is what we call fluid reasoning.
10:29I start by going for the biggest numbers.
10:32The biggest total surely will have to be made with some of the biggest numbers.
10:37But if I have the tens in that one, that's 20.
10:39He's put the tens at the top.
10:40Well, that's clever, isn't it?
10:42The tens got to go at the top.
10:43Yeah.
10:44The two tens, they can't go in any of the ones apart from the top one because they alone add up to all of the other totals or exceed them.
10:52So that has to go in the top one.
10:54Oh, his mind is working.
10:55It's whizzing a lot.
10:56It's whizzing a lot.
10:57A dozen, yeah.
10:58If that's one and five, that's six, six, five, maybe.
11:01I look at four and two, five and one, other things that add up to six.
11:04The six is what I need.
11:06And one.
11:07That's 26.
11:08I stick the three here.
11:11It works.
11:12So I pick up the piece with the twos on it.
11:16It's kind of a corner piece.
11:18And there is a corner that I really want it to fit in, but it would mean rotating it.
11:21I think it just has to be upright.
11:23The twos are the wrong way round, and the instructions specifically say right way up.
11:32Four.
11:33What does that add up to?
11:34Seven.
11:35Four.
11:36That's eleven.
11:37I'm just going to double check that this is legal, but I'm pretty sure it is.
11:38Legal?
11:39What?
11:40You must keep all the numbers on the blocks facing the right way up.
11:42Those numbers are the right way up, even if they're rotated.
11:45I think that's allowed.
11:46I think that's a valid solution.
11:48So I'm going to stop.
11:51He's thinking the right way up is facing up rather than facing down.
11:55But the right way up is essentially the right orientation.
11:58I think he's misinterpreted the rules.
12:00And anyway, no one would really think to put their numbers face down, would they?
12:04So Nathan only got the first game right, but in really good time.
12:08So unless eight other players ace both rounds, he's got a really good chance of going through.
12:13I feel confident.
12:18Do you like working at your hotel?
12:20It's all right working there just to tide me over, yeah.
12:23What would you do if you'd say you could just do anything?
12:25Oh, well, I'm a performer.
12:26I'm a drag queen.
12:27Oh, no.
12:28Yeah.
12:29How long have you been doing drag queens?
12:31Just since I was 18, so a couple of years now.
12:33What happened after school and you went to college?
12:36I didn't offer to go to Cambridge University.
12:40Amazing.
12:41That's amazing.
12:43At face value, people probably wouldn't think I was clever.
12:48They'd probably think I was a bit simple.
12:50Yeah, I've always just had an interest in academia and literature and reading.
12:55It wasn't right for me at the time, and my family thought I was making a huge mistake.
12:59I moved out on my own.
13:01Wow.
13:02Just started at the hotel and doing this, it'd be just nice to show them that I'm talented in different ways.
13:11Yep.
13:20Right, let's see what the others are capable of.
13:22Which letter is missing and from which months?
13:26Can I rearrange these?
13:27Nothing's gonna stop me.
13:29Why?
13:30The whole idea is really just to give it a quick scan.
13:32Is this the best strategy?
13:34Probably not.
13:35It's gonna take ages.
13:37There's an A before January.
13:39Oh, another one rearranging them.
13:41Yes.
13:42I like her look, don't you?
13:43Very much.
13:44It's like a haunted Victorian schoolgirl.
13:46Let's try putting them in.
13:48Oh, yeah.
13:49No, not again.
13:51I'm dealing out the cards that I've got in my hand, one at a time.
13:54He's collecting them all in his hands, I can't even see them.
13:58Wow.
13:59That was a real raspberry.
14:01Okay.
14:02Oh, Helen.
14:03I start to think of months that have less used letters in.
14:07I think I've got it.
14:08I've got to stop a G.
14:10Helen's on fire.
14:11She means business.
14:13Well, I've got no clue about this one.
14:15I've tried everything.
14:16If I had six hours to do this, it'd be all right, but we don't.
14:19We've got 12 minutes, so this is hopeless.
14:22I'm just gonna guess.
14:23Got the correct month, but the incorrect letter.
14:25Yep.
14:26I really don't think I'm seeing a G.
14:28Excellent.
14:29Lovely writing.
14:30G.
14:31August.
14:32Okay, so it's no G.
14:34Oh, my goodness.
14:35This is so sharp.
14:37With the two tens, there's only one line.
14:39It can go on, so it has to go there.
14:41And now that I've got those tens in place, and I was thinking,
14:44okay, what else have I got?
14:47What?
14:48How fast was that?
14:49Justin.
14:503.49.
14:514.40.
14:527.53.
14:53Well done, Helen.
14:54Just a dancer.
14:55She's proving you're not.
14:56Hey!
14:57How was that?
14:58Yeah, all right, I think.
14:59Last to attempt the quick-fire round, 32-year-old Ollie.
15:02You've got children as well, haven't you?
15:03Right, so I've got two boys.
15:04Dan's 16, and Luke's is 12.
15:05What about you, a little boy?
15:06How old's he?
15:07He's just turning five, but...
15:08It's the first time I've not done school, Ronan.
15:09Really?
15:10Yeah, yeah.
15:11Yeah, yeah.
15:12Yeah, yeah.
15:13Yeah, yeah.
15:14Yeah, yeah.
15:15Yeah, yeah.
15:16Yeah, yeah.
15:17Yeah, yeah.
15:18It's the first time I've not done school, Ronan.
15:20Really?
15:21Yeah, yeah.
15:22All that.
15:23It's really weird.
15:24Oh, are you getting a bit emotional?
15:25Yeah, because I just miss him.
15:27Oh, yeah.
15:28Sometimes he does remind me a lot of me.
15:30He's got a good memory, and even when he was sort of 18 months old,
15:34he would recite the Gruffalo word for word, and...
15:37Do you know what I mean?
15:38Yeah?
15:39Yeah, I'm really sorry.
15:40Don't apologise.
15:41When I were a kid, I used to know
15:45everybody's reg play on the estate where I lived.
15:47I probably knew off by all.
15:4960 or 70 car reg plates.
15:52Don't apologise, that's all.
15:54I do like little sponges on there together.
15:56At school, I think I should have at least tried.
16:00I did not want to do A-levels.
16:02I did not want to do a degree.
16:03I don't think I've ever shown any sort of passion to progress.
16:06Some people are just really good at knowing what they want to do,
16:09and I've never had that.
16:11I worked in shops, in sales, in a call centre.
16:15I learnt to do plumbing.
16:17I hated it.
16:19Oli!
16:21I've done this through morbid curiosity.
16:27Am I actually good at something, or am I just dim-witted,
16:32but good at remembering stuff?
16:34This is lovely Oli.
16:35I love the name Oli.
16:36If I am a secret genius, I think it would be nice to be able
16:40to tap into it and then apply it to my son, Finlay.
16:58It couldn't have been a worse task for me.
17:03I'm not very good at anagrams,
17:05and I'm not very good at word searches and things.
17:08I'm thinking start logically month by month
17:12and go through and spell them.
17:15I'm not getting anywhere here.
17:20Shit.
17:33I taught my dog some sign language.
17:35Didn't you? That's clever.
17:36Yeah.
17:37I just made up my own sign language for the dog.
17:4012 people from the North West and Northern Ireland
17:43are taking on a series of Mensa-inspired games
17:46to see if they have the intelligence of a genius.
17:51I'm quite nervous.
17:53You're absolutely fine.
17:55My family think I'm clever.
17:56Whether I'm a genius or not, I don't know.
17:58I'm hoping...
18:00I'm really...
18:01Generally, I'm hoping that I am.
18:08Ambulance crew member Oli
18:09is the last to work out which letter is missing from which month.
18:16Oh, she's struggling with this one.
18:17But if she can get one game right in a quick enough time,
18:21it might just get her through to the next round.
18:24I'm still not really getting anywhere fast.
18:27And I look up at clock and I've used about seven minutes.
18:31I really haven't got a clue of that one.
18:32She hasn't got a clue.
18:34So I'm just going to say it's E.
18:37Move on.
18:38She's just left it.
18:40She's gone.
18:41Oli.
18:42Oli has left the building.
18:47I'm completely letting the nerves get the better of me.
18:50Has she gone on to the second?
18:52I might not have time to do the next task.
18:56Alan, she's only got five minutes left.
18:57I really hope she can do this.
19:00Come on, Oli.
19:01Place the shapes in their correct positions on the grid
19:03to ensure each line adds up to the given value.
19:07Cool.
19:09I'm thinking this one's going to be just as difficult,
19:15if not more difficult.
19:19I were always really quite good at mental arithmetic.
19:22When you're recognising patterns and things like that.
19:26I looked at the top row with 26 and I thought,
19:28well, the double ten can only go on the top row.
19:32Oh!
19:34Oh, my goodness.
19:35She's been so fast.
19:36Oh, my God!
19:43That was impressive.
19:44I mean, that was incredibly fast.
19:46She did that second game in 2 minutes 48.
19:49I felt relieved that I've done it, but then at the same time,
19:52I was just thinking, I could have had an extra three minutes next door.
19:55How are we feeling?
19:56How are we feeling?
20:01How are we feeling about results?
20:03Nervous?
20:04I think, personally, I'll be really shocked if I stay.
20:06Hi, guys.
20:07Hello.
20:08Got you some Wednesdaydale and an ice brew, because I know we've got some Northerners in.
20:15Yes.
20:16How did you find the games?
20:18Good.
20:19The missing month.
20:20The letter was G from the month August.
20:25And you had to write down both the letter and the month, okay?
20:28You didn't need to rearrange all the letters on the board like you're auditioning for Countdown.
20:33Shit.
20:34And with the second game, the easiest way was to put the larger numbers at the top.
20:40Some of you looked like you were doing your tax returns in a wind tunnel.
20:43Six of you got both games correct, whilst two of you got one right in a quick enough time to get you through to the next round.
20:54The eight players with the best combination of speed and accuracy are, in no particular order...
21:05Harley.
21:08Helen.
21:12Nathan.
21:14Joe.
21:18Jasmine.
21:21Sarah.
21:25Justin.
21:30And last to go through is...
21:36Ollie.
21:40Surprised?
21:41Yeah, really surprised.
21:42I'm just really shocked that I would have top eight. I really thought that I'd messed it up royally.
21:48Okay, so obviously that leaves four people going home and of course that means CJ, Ethan, Steve and Liz you can go back to your flock.
22:02It would have been nice to have done better but at least I got the August part right. You know, it's back to the hotel for me.
22:13I'll go and rest your brains because the games are going to get harder.
22:15I've made it to the next round. I'm really relieved. I don't think there's anyone more surprised than you are.
22:26That was unbelievable.
22:27Yeah, that probably would take help. Yeah.
22:28Aw, well done everyone.
22:29Well done everyone.
22:30We're all going to do fine.
22:31Aw, well done everyone.
22:32Well done everyone.
22:33Well done everyone.
22:34We're all going to do fine.
22:35So when did this start? Is this just happened overnight or...?
22:36Then I woke up this morning and was just completely gone.
22:37It's day two for the eight remaining possible geniuses.
22:42I know that I sometimes get stuck in this imposter syndrome thing where it's like yeah but maybe I've just fluked it or...
23:06Yeah.
23:07It's a terrible way to think.
23:10Deep breath what sort of strengths do you have what do you think you're really good up?
23:14That's gonna help you so I can walk into a room and I'll spot little details and then I can recall and sort of years later
23:21Hi guys
23:25How we all feeling
23:27Brain had a bit of a rest
23:30Oh my god blink twice if you're having a good time
23:34Ah-ha right answer right okay for this next round you're gonna work in pairs
23:42You want to test your communication and teamwork skills, but most importantly your memory and
23:49Verbal you choose the pairs yourself the one who was quickest in the previous games picks first and so on
23:56Okay, so the first person to pick
23:59Is Justin yesterday you got both quick fire rounds
24:04Correct in three minutes and 49 seconds
24:08Well, except that I've got the quickest score yesterday. I was very very surprised to pick someone you think you're gonna work well with
24:15I'm happy with Ollie you better have a good memory. You said before your hand, so I hope so
24:20Right the next person to choose their pair is
24:25Joe who are you gonna pick I'm gonna pick Nathan because he's great
24:29Yes, you are sweet. It was quite nice to be picked early on I'm kind of used to for example in PE
24:36Being one of the later picks so hopefully I can do my bit to make our team do well
24:41The next fastest person not in a pair is Helen the tap-dancing Queen who you're gonna go for
24:48I'll go with Jasmine. I won't ask Jasmine. Now you feel about this. I don't feel I'm gonna get much back thumbs up
24:56That of course leaves Harley and Sarah
24:59Now only the two fastest pairs will go through to the next round so get those brains in gear good luck
25:08Thank you
25:10So Susie what does round two involve well, this is one I love so it takes place in an ice cream parlor
25:18It requires a huge amount of memory recall
25:22That's what we're testing first and foremost with this one as you will see so Alan you're having a party who's coming just four guests though
25:28Free guests. I'm actually one of the guests. It's a real slap in the face
25:32It's true and each of them requires a bespoke ice cream
25:37So one of the players is gonna have to relay the orders to the other player who's then gonna have to make the ice cream
25:43These roles can be swapped at any time, but they only have 15 minutes on the clock
25:47Hopefully my memories are all right
25:49Communication skills if we can't communicate then we're shagged, aren't we?
25:53Ollie! Justin!
25:57Come on, you can do this
26:02I'm really happy that he picked me and I'm also
26:05Nervous I really don't want to let him down and I'd be so upset if he got knocked out because of me
26:11My stomach feels like it's about to fall out my arse
26:24It's day two of the North West and Northern Ireland heat and
26:28And Justin and Ollie are the first pair to tackle round two
26:34I scream
26:36Instructions make an ice cream for four customers
26:39Only one person at a time will be able to hear the order and you can listen to the order as many times as you like
26:44You must place the four completed ice creams on the counter and press the stop button to finish
26:49Are you happy with that? Yeah
26:51Do you want to do the orders and I'll do the ice creams because you're good at memory, aren't you?
26:55Yes
26:55Which one would you choose to memorize or would you choose to make?
26:59I'd make it because I'd have a little lick myself
27:01Adele wants a four scoop ice cream starting with vanilla at the bottom chocolate cookies and cream and strawberry on the top
27:15two wafers two flakes and sprinkles
27:18So the first one is vanilla at the bottom then chocolate cookies and cream then strawberry the first order is relatively simple two wafers two flakes and
27:34Sprinkles thinking yeah, I've I've got that one. That's locked in
27:39I'd like to keep it into the next one
27:41Amanda only wants two scoops
27:43She wants the top two flavors of Adele's but wants to swap cookies and cream for mango sorbet
27:50Oh, it's tricky with double the flakes that Adele has but half the wafers and strawberry sauce
27:58It changes really suddenly from being really simple to doing like functional maths and remembering things now
28:05the next one is mango sorbet and
28:08Strawberry one wafer four flakes strawberry sauce. Well done. That's good. That is good. Oh
28:19Look, it's my order. What's your favorite ice cream, Alan? Oh a knobbly-bobbly, of course
28:24Alan's ice cream is the same as Adele's but his bottom flavor is mint and he wants double the number of wafers
28:32So Alan wants mint on the bottom
28:46I do think I have got quite a good memory, but I just really don't want to let him down. He wants
28:54chocolate
28:56Yeah, no, it's fine. And that's always in the back of your mind. You know, you've got to get the order right
29:02Yeah, then cookies and cream. Yeah, then strawberry. Okay. I forgot wafers and I'll come back
29:14Been that
29:17It was right I think her nerves are getting to her Alan
29:20I'm finding a bit of frustration because she seems to be taking a long time to make sure that she can remember it and I'm thinking you're just
29:26Going for one order
29:28Do you want to listen to that last okay?
29:30It confused me which one wanted double? Justin has gone to the phone now, so that's good. They're alternating a little bit
29:38Yeah, Adele's but mint and double the number of wafers
29:42So it's mint
29:44Can you remember what Adele's was? Chocolate
29:46Cookies and cream
29:48Strawberry
29:50But it would double the wafers, weren't it? The wafers, yeah
29:52You're happy with that? Yeah
29:54And some sprinkles
29:56And sprinkles, correct
29:58Great
29:59Right, they're on the last one
30:01Ant wants double the scoops of what Amanda is having, but he wants to swap strawberry for lemon sorbet
30:09He wants half of Amanda's flakes, but double the number of Adele's wafers
30:16So Ant is the same as Adele's, but he wants to double the number
30:19I've completely lost it
30:22He's a bit confused
30:24I really really appreciate how difficult it had been for Ollie and I felt so guilty
30:28I can't remember it
30:29Do you want to start doing that whilst I go back and listen again? I can make it
30:31I can make it, yeah
30:32You make it, I'll go back and listen again
30:33While you re-listen
30:35Come on, Justin
30:37Ant wants double the scoops of what Amanda is having
30:41So it is Adele's, half the flakes, double the wafers
30:44I thought it weren't the same as Amanda, but he wanted double
30:46So it's double what Adele had
30:48Justin said that is definitely the double of Adele and not Amanda
30:53And he said yeah
30:54And I just think to myself, yeah, well if you're happy, I'm happy
30:57That's massive
30:59It's massive because it's double Adele's and not Amanda's
31:04We're going to be ready
31:06I mean she's gonna go out of business if she gives that size look
31:12That was tough
31:14I can say they got three out of the four
31:17Three?
31:18Three out of the four
31:19Oh wow
31:20And their time was 13.57 so they did not have long left
31:22Let's see if any of the others can get all four correct shall we?
31:26Would you like to listen to the order first?
31:28Do you want to go and listen?
31:29Go and listen first
31:30Good at memory?
31:31I'm not too bad
31:32I think we should both listen at some point anyway
31:33So shall I just go over here?
31:35Yes
31:36Vanilla, chocolate, cookies and cream
31:39Poor old Jasmine
31:40Vanilla, chocolate, cookies and cream
31:43I think we're both confident with that one
31:45Two flakes, two wafers and sprinkles
31:47Well done Sarah, that was spot on
31:48The second order comes through and I panic
31:51I always used to pick up routines very quickly
31:54My retention skills were very good
31:57But that time pressed just a bit much
31:59So hard
32:00Oh, oh she's gone crazy
32:02Okay
32:03I don't want to let Jasmine down
32:05I think you feel stressed
32:06Memory is one of the hardest, hardest things
32:09Oh god
32:10When you're put on the spot your mind just goes blank
32:12Totally
32:13I feel like I want to listen again, I'm so sorry
32:16Amanda wants the top two of Adele's
32:19But she wants to swap the cookies and cream for mango sorbet
32:22So Harley and I, this is going okay
32:24Carry on
32:25If you want to go and listen
32:26Yeah
32:27Okay
32:28Frankly, I feel a bit cheeky in this moment
32:30Because Joe is having to remember all the orders
32:33Which is the crux of the game
32:35Correct
32:36That was very slick
32:38Alan's ice cream is the same as Adele's
32:41Adele?
32:42Is she really your best friend?
32:43Yeah
32:44Has she married me?
32:46I'm now divorced so let's just move on
32:48I don't really want to talk about it
32:50Do you want to go over
32:51I'll go over and have a listen
32:52Yeah
32:53Good, Nathan's going to listen now
32:55So I got that Ant is having double Amanda
33:03That, that was complicated and I think you want to go and listen to it again
33:06Oh
33:07Nathan
33:08Nathan
33:09She does look a little bit stressed
33:11And I'm now questioning this that there's something about doubling
33:15Oh, that's too much sauce Jasmine
33:20Mango
33:21Mango
33:22Tea lemon
33:23I'm a bit aware that I'm taking more of a forward roll than I normally would
33:27Are you happy with that?
33:28Stop
33:29Yep
33:311105 without 15 minutes
33:33Yeah
33:34Wow, wow, wow, that's good
33:35You were definitely better being over there than me
33:37Am I getting the impression she's not pleased with this?
33:40Well, there we go
33:41There we go
33:42Okay
33:43You're good, we're good, we're good, we're good
33:44Yep
33:45Okay
33:46Okay
33:51We did what we could
33:57Nothing in the world could have preferred me for that
33:59Yeah
34:00There's no point guessing
34:01Yeah
34:02Nope, absolutely
34:03We've done what we've done
34:04Hello everyone
34:06Hello
34:07So what did you think of the game?
34:10Excellent
34:11Four of you have scooped to place in the final game
34:17The other four I think had brain freeze
34:21So, the four going through are
34:29Nathan and Jo
34:32You got all four correct
34:35Nathan, you look shocked
34:36I honestly, I thought I was useless
34:39I thought Jo did everything
34:40He really wasn't
34:41But
34:42I'm so proud
34:44And the other pair going through with three correct is
34:51Justin and Ollie
34:52Oh
34:53100% that was you
34:54So glad I picked it
34:57Oh, well that's nice
34:58But obviously that means we've got to say goodbye to you for
35:04Well done
35:05Nice
35:06I did panic a little bit in there
35:07And it was mainly because there was two of us
35:09I'd much rather fail on my own than fail and let somebody else down
35:13I am really proud of myself for getting this far
35:16I think it's a massive achievement
35:18I can't believe it
35:20I'm in complete shock really
35:22Like such disbelief
35:24Just comparing myself to everybody else
35:25Thinking they're really smart
35:27And definitely not feeling confident about the last round
35:29Sat down thinking all the fun go
35:31I've had a really nice couple of days
35:32Yeah
35:33And I've got that
35:34Herbalancing feeling like
35:35Ah shit
35:36Do it again
35:38So
35:39You're going through to the final game
35:41I know you've been surrounded by frozen food
35:43But why don't you lot go off and cool down
35:46Because things are gonna get tougher
35:48The worst bit is is that there's four of us here and later on one of us is going to leave
36:07Yeah
36:08You know I mean it is it is horrible
36:10In the final game at Genius HQ we have four players left
36:15Trying to be in the best headspace I can be
36:18Where three will go through to our finals in Oxford
36:21What are they playing?
36:22They're playing a game called Come to Light
36:24It's the ultimate test of their pattern recognition and memory skills
36:28And they have up to 30 minutes to complete both stages of the game
36:32Oli
36:33First to play for a place in the finals is ambulance crew member Oli
36:38Thank you
36:39I don't think I've ever excelled at anything
36:41So to then be told like oh yeah actually you are really clever or gifted or whatever
36:47I would be shocked
36:54Are they all your lamps Susie?
36:56Susie
36:57Yeah
36:58Just call me Miss Havisham
36:59I was gonna say your hoarding's quite niche
37:01In front of you is a set of lamps
37:04A lamp will illuminate on the sound of a beep
37:07In this final round you will hear a beep
37:09And at each beep one of the lamps will light
37:12And you will have to spot as a player the sequence in which these lamps are being illuminated
37:18And at some point the lights are going to stop illuminating but the beep will continue
37:22And the players have to follow the beep around and when it stops they have to tell us which lamp would have been illuminated if the lighting had continued
37:30When the beeps stop you must pull the toggle off the lamp which should now be illuminated
37:36She'll make light work of this
37:41I look at patterns most days I look at ECGs and that's just a pattern on a line
37:45So I'm thinking okay if we can just figure out the sequence we've got this
37:51It's all happening quite quickly as the lights start I start counting them
38:02So they're going one, two, three, miss three
38:05And then I was thinking the next one would be one, two, three, miss four
38:08Yeah I've got this now it's gonna be three and miss five
38:14Yeah that's right
38:18And then the sixth one
38:21No light comes on
38:23And I'm like okay right
38:25Which one just went
38:27But then the beeps carry on
38:28So there's three more beeps
38:29So I'm thinking oh yeah I've got to continue the pattern around with no lights
38:33So I'm counting the sixth lamp
38:36I pull the toggle at the end
38:40Oh my god I got it right
38:45That's great look at that
38:48I know
38:49She really means business on it
38:55Memorise the rule for each colour
38:57Beside each colour is an instruction as to what move you need to take on a giant
39:02It's a bit like a disco mat
39:04When you are ready say start the sequence
39:07Then you will see a sequence of colours that will correspond to the rules that you have memorised
39:12The lampshades will light according to the colour of the instruction
39:15You must move through the grid using these rules
39:18When the sequence finishes you must stand in the corresponding square
39:22I look at red and it says that's three steps to the right
39:25So I tap my right side three times
39:28And then blue is one to the left
39:29Well blue is one, one thumb
39:31And then yellow I've got a gold ring on
39:34So I'm thinking stand still
39:36So put your hands in front
39:37Touch the yellow ring
39:38Pink was two forward
39:40And I've got two pink flowers on my shoes
39:42Two flowers, two forward
39:43Start the sequence
39:46As the colours go on I'm sort of tapping my side
39:56And doing probably really daft movements
39:59To try and remember what I should be doing for each colour
40:02She follows the instructions to the letter
40:05I get to a blue one and move one to the left
40:09And then the lights suddenly start going really quick
40:12And I'm starting to think oh god I'm not going to keep up with this
40:18I see a green one and I take two steps back
40:22And when I look up there are no more lights
40:26I didn't see anything after green so I think I'm going to lock in at this one
40:30I definitely followed those instructions right
40:34That felt so quick
40:36She did that in less than a quarter of the time she had
40:396.35
40:41Wow
40:42Oh no
40:43I hope I've not fucked it up
40:45On that last one I think I like looked backwards
40:47And now I'm like thinking oh no did I miss a colour?
40:50But it's too late now
40:52Next up, Justin
40:55Justin means business, he's put his glasses on
40:58Yeah
41:00Come on then, watch the sequence
41:02I know that this is the one that should be
41:05But maybe it wasn't that one, maybe it's the one before
41:07So I went for the one before
41:09Oh my god
41:11Let's see how Nathan gets on without Joe
41:15Look around Nathan
41:21I've really no idea at this point
41:23Because I missed the first few lamps
41:26I've just realised going in sets of three
41:28And the number of lights it's missing is increasing
41:33Good
41:34Every time the amount that don't light up increases by one
41:39That was fast, well done Nathan
41:41I'm ready to start the sequence
41:47Kink
41:48Oh, I'm snorted
41:50I imagine Nathan being quite a good dancer
41:52It's always the quiet ones, isn't it?
41:54I bet he doesn't mean Macarena or something
41:57HE LAUGHS
42:15This is my final position
42:17Well done Nathan
42:18So how's it that you're feeling now that we're done?
42:21I reckon I got the first part relatively quick
42:24Yeah
42:26Last to play the final game
42:28Sports management consultant Joe
42:30Thank you
42:31Thank you very much
42:32That's the second time today you've saved me
42:34Not at all
42:35I look at you and I see someone who is totally, totally intelligent
42:39But maybe doesn't always believe it
42:42Or you're just really shy about it
42:45I don't know, but I'd like to know
42:48At school I was called out in assembly
42:50Because I got 100% on my SATs
42:53Which was obviously a brilliant achievement
42:55But introverted shy Joe was like mortified
42:58Going out to the front to get this certificate
43:00I know that I've carried that into my adult life
43:04I'm always told
43:06Or like in meetings
43:08Speak more
43:09Or
43:10You know just
43:11Yeah
43:12Share what you're thinking
43:13Sometimes I am holding back
43:15And I need to be more confident
43:17So I'm aware of that
43:18It's
43:19I think this is just really interesting
43:21For me
43:22To
43:23Have some internal validation
43:26That actually I might be clever
43:28Yeah
43:29Me and my brother are very similar
43:32And he's very ambitious
43:33And he
43:35Has achieved really great things
43:38And
43:39I don't know if it's
43:41I'm introverted
43:42He's not so introverted
43:44I'm female
43:45And he's male
43:46And I think there's some slight differences there
43:48That mean
43:49He has gone after things
43:50And
43:52And
43:53Has achieved great things
43:54I think there's a real kind of value that can't really be replicated
44:04In
44:05Believing in yourself
44:07I've had the privilege to see probably more than the rest
44:12How brilliantly you did
44:13It was me picking up that phone and listening to what you'd actually heard
44:18And thinking how simple what you told me was
44:22But how complex what I heard was
44:26You couldn't have done that if you weren't smart
44:31Joe!
44:32I would never have applied for something like this ten years ago
44:37Because I didn't want to own or celebrate what I can do
44:40I shouldn't need the validation
44:42But it would just make me realise
44:44Okay
44:45Like people aren't making this up Joe
44:47You do have a different way of thinking
44:48And it's okay to celebrate that
44:50It would be interesting to see how she gets on now
44:55She's not with Nathan
44:59One
45:00Two
45:02Three
45:03Then we miss
45:04Three
45:05She's got it
45:06She's got it
45:07She's got the sequence
45:08Then we miss six
45:09One
45:10Two
45:12Three
45:16Yes
45:17Yes
45:18Okay she's done that with ample time
45:19But if she really wants to get into the top three
45:21She has got to smash this
45:23Come on Joe
45:25Right
45:26As I'm reading out the colours
45:27I think this kind of reminds me of the cha-cha slide
45:30Let's just go with it
45:32Red
45:33Three steps to the right
45:34Blue
45:35One step to the left
45:37And I actually feel quite confident with this rhyme
45:40Start the sequence
45:46Green is two steps back
45:48Wow
45:49Two steps forward
45:50Oh my goodness
45:51That's so quick
45:52Blue is this one
45:53Green is this one
45:54Okay right
45:55Goodness gracious
45:56That's quick
45:57I think it's this one
45:58Well done
45:59Wow wow wow
46:00Someone's through to the finals in Oxford
46:02I'm gonna
46:05Oh no press it
46:10I'll go again
46:11She's on the right spot
46:13I think she's doubting herself
46:14I'm really conscious of time
46:15But I think I will kick myself
46:17If this isn't the right place
46:20No
46:22Let's just make sure it's accurate rather than fast
46:25No that's so not necessary
46:27You were right Joe
46:28She has such a problem with self-belief and confidence so
46:34Agonising then to see
46:36She's got to believe in herself
46:37She's brilliant
46:38Yes
46:39Red
46:42Three steps to the right
46:44Green is two steps backwards
46:46Blue is a step to the left
46:48This is the quick bit
46:49Two
46:50One
46:51Two
46:53Do the pattern again
46:54I land in the same position
46:56And I think
46:57Two out of two isn't bad
46:58Let's just go for this one
47:00This is my final position
47:02Come on
47:03Yes
47:09She got both parts of the challenge right
47:11But she did take a little while didn't she
47:16I think all of us have done better than we thought we would do
47:19So
47:21That's got to be
47:23A positive
47:24Absolutely
47:25But I'll still be a bit gutted if I go home next
47:27Oh God
47:28How could you not be?
47:29I know
47:30Hello everyone
47:32So what did you think of the game?
47:35It was fun
47:36I thought it was fun
47:37Flashing lights
47:38Bit of a disco
47:39That's what I thought
47:40Yeah
47:41All I needed was a viennetta and a bottle of rosƩ
47:43It's a normal Saturday night for me
47:46OK well listen
47:47Do you want the good news?
47:48You all completed the game right
47:51Oh
47:52So it's down to time
47:53OK I'm afraid
47:56The first person going through to the final
48:00And our top performer
48:03It was
48:06It was Oli
48:07Thank you
48:08Thank you
48:09Are you pleased with that?
48:10I can't believe I'm in this final
48:11No I am going to have to go home and chew on it for a bit
48:14Well well done
48:15Yeah thank you
48:16Thank you
48:17You're crying
48:18Yeah
48:19I'm making sure to that actually
48:20Oh
48:21In second place and going through to the final it's
48:25Nathan
48:26And the last person going through to the final is
48:40It's Justin
48:43Well done Justin
48:44I'm so pleased I've gone through
48:45Yeah
48:46I'm so pleased I've gone through
48:47Yeah
48:48I really am so pleased that I've gone through but you know it means someone's got to go home it's horrible
48:50But you know you've done so well to get here you really have
48:54Oh Joe
48:55Joe
48:56Honestly it's all good
48:57You're all good
48:58I am glad that I at least got it right and I'm gutted that I didn't just back myself the first time
49:06God smash it
49:07This has to be a turning point now to trust myself and go for it
49:12Good game
49:13It's true
49:14Well played
49:16I can't believe that
49:18What a mess of emotions
49:19On one hand really happy
49:20On one hand kind of surprised
49:22I'm absolutely gutted for Joe
49:23Bless it
49:24And you did the best in that round
49:25I know
49:26Isn't that mad
49:28They don't know it yet
49:29By the end of the competition
49:31Two of them will discover their IQ scores are in the top 1% of the country
49:37Up there with Marie Curie and Apple founder Steve Jobs
49:42Funny I get compared to them all the time
49:45Shit the bed
49:46Being a lorry driver I am part of an exclusive little group called the mother truckers
50:00Next time
50:01Four letter words this could be dangerous for a priest
50:04Hallelujah
50:05Our next 12 hopefuls from the North East and Scotland
50:09Contenders ready
50:11I've got a small two winged insect
50:13Mosquito I've got mosquito
50:15Wow
50:16Out of four teams
50:17There's a girl on three teams
50:18So statistically
50:19There will be a girl in the final now
50:20I'll have a day off love
50:22I mean
50:23Oh
50:24Oh
50:34Lord
50:38Oh
