00:00I am going to miss you two, tremendously.
00:04It's time to talk Grey's Anatomy, but before we get into Leslie Goldberg's recap for
00:08The Hollywood Reporter, we do have to drop a big spoiler warning for the season 14
00:13finale of the ABC series. So if you're still here, then you should have tissues at the
00:17ready, which kind of goes without saying when it comes to the long-running medical drama.
00:21Thursday's finale featured the previously announced departures of Sarah Drew and Jessica
00:24Capshaw, who played April and Arizona respectively. Intruder Ellen Pompeo's promise
00:28that you only get killed off the show when your behavior is bad. There was no grisly end
00:33or tragic demise for the characters who have become fan favorites. In the finale, weeks
00:37after her brush with death, Drew's April Kepner quit her job at Grace Loan Memorial to do
00:41God's work. This brought the religious character's crisis of faith storyline to a close
00:46and was capped off when April and Matthew tied the knot. Capshaw's Arizona got her happily ever
00:50after as well as she followed through with her plan to move to New York so her daughter
00:53Sophia could be in the same city with her other mother, Callie, played by former series
00:57regular Sarah Ramirez. Ramirez was not featured on screen, but the ABC show subtly incorporated
01:02the fan favorite into the episode by playing her cover of The Story, which she originally
01:06performed during the season 7 musical episode of Graze. In some good news for Capshaw's
01:11Arizona and her legions of fans, the finale featured the reveal that Callie is now single
01:15again over in the Big Apple, leaving the door open for the ex-wives to rekindle their relationship.
01:20Capshaw has been with Graze for 10 seasons, nine as a series regular, playing Arizona, the openly gay
01:25pediatric surgeon who was almost immediately embraced by the LGBTQ community. With former
01:30star Ramirez, Capshaw was part of one of Primetime's first lesbian weddings. The character helped
01:34Graze receive multiple awards from LGBTQ watchdog group GLAAD while also representing a traditionally
01:40underserved community in an era when gay characters were still few and far between. Drew, with the
01:45Shondaland drama for nine seasons, eight as a regular, came in as an intern and has been wildly
01:49praised for April's commitment to her Christianity, which was put to the test this season. Back in March,
01:54when their imminent exits were announced, creator Shonda Rhimes said,
01:57"...it's always hard for me to say goodbye to any of my characters. Both Arizona Robins and April
02:01Kepner are not only beloved but iconic. Both the LGBTQ and devout Christian communities are
02:07underrepresented on TV." Rimes further echoed these sentiments after Thursday's finale when she took
02:11to Twitter to write,
02:12"...I will never stop being grateful for the chance to work with Sarah Drew and Jessica Capshaw.
02:16In April in Arizona, they created powerful, unforgettable characters."
