Fiennes, who played the villainous Lord Voldemort across four Harry Potter films, told The New York Times Magazine that the “verbal abuse” Rowling receives online is “disgusting” and “appalling.”
Transcript
00:00Ralph Fiennes is defending Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling over her controversial stance on
00:04transgender rights. Fiennes, of course, played Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter films.
00:09In a new interview with the New York Times, he discussed Rowling's comments concerning
00:13transgender rights. He said of Rowling,
00:15The verbal abuse directed at her is disgusting. It's appalling. I mean,
00:19I can understand a viewpoint that might be angry at what she says about women,
00:22but it's not some obscene, uber-right-wing fascist. He continued,
00:26it's just a woman saying, I'm a woman, and I feel I'm a woman, and I want to be able to say that
00:30I'm a woman, and I understand where she's coming from, even though I'm not a woman.
00:34The controversy began in June 2020 when the author first tweeted about an op-ed piece regarding,
00:39people who menstruate, and mocked the story for not using the word women. The tweet generated
00:43backlash, which prompted the author to repeatedly and ever more adamantly defend herself and
00:48elaborate on her views concerning transgender rights in a lengthy essay. Fiennes has defended
00:52Rowling on earlier occasions. However, several of his fellow Harry Potter castmates, including
00:56Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, have issued statements in support of the trans
01:01community in response to the controversy. Rowling's comments have also been condemned by a number of
01:06LGBTQ plus rights groups, including GLAAD, the Human Rights Coalition, and the Trevor Project.
