00:00An extremely famous person is coming to say hi.
00:03How are you?
00:04How are you?
00:04Hello.
00:05Hi, how's it going?
00:06Good to see you, man.
00:07I'm already excited to talk to you because I've heard you've got a documentary that you're working on right now.
00:12Yeah, yeah.
00:12That's going to have a lot going on in this.
00:14So where do you even start?
00:15I don't know.
00:15It's the beginning, maybe.
00:17I think I'll just be telling my story and then they'll go out and talk to everybody.
00:23I don't know.
00:24I'm not directing it, so who knows where to come from.
00:27But it's such a long story, beautiful career.
00:31What did you feel you had to have there that had to be in the documentary that maybe you hadn't spoken about before?
00:41It's not that I had to.
00:43It's just truth.
00:44Just being honest about whatever it is that we talk about.
00:49I don't have anything to hide.
00:51My life is my life.
00:53And I'm not afraid to show it.
00:56And you've been so involved in music for so long.
00:58How do you feel about the state of music right now?
01:00Because if you ask me, R&B is having a huge resurgence.
01:03You're talking about Kehlani.
01:04You're talking about Leon Thomas, who's nominated tonight.
01:06Kehlani's nominated, too.
01:07How do you feel about those artists in R&B right now?
01:09Well, I'm especially proud because Kehlani and Chris Riddick, who produced and also wrote it with her, and Leon Thomas, all those kids started in my studio.
01:22And we worked together in the studio.
01:23We actually did Ariana Grande together.
01:25And that was in the very beginning, years ago.
01:29So I'm very proud.
01:31I'm like a proud father to watch them winning these awards tonight because it's like, you know, that was years ago.
01:37And they've been putting time in it.
01:40And I'm especially proud of Leon as well because Leon is, I've been telling everybody that Mutt is kind of like describes who he is because the reality is that he is a musical Mutt.
01:52And he's always been able to do everything.
01:55And it's taken this long for him to kind of actually happen because he could do so many things that no one could figure him out.
02:03So I think now the world is finally catching up and figuring out that he can do everything and they can accept everything, anything from him.
02:11And when you look at the new crop, do you compare them to the greats that you work with?
02:16Or is it a whole new generation and they approach things differently?
02:19They definitely approach things differently, as every generation does.
02:22Because we can't expect people to do exactly what we did because it would all be the same anyway.
02:28And they have different influences.
02:29This world is a completely different world and they don't see things the same way we saw them.
02:34So I expect it to be different.
02:36And I always kind of sit to the side and watch.
02:41And that allows me to kind of like be involved sometimes because I don't say, you've got to do it this way.
02:47I kind of watch the world that they're living in as well.
02:50But it must be so gratifying for you also to see that your tradition and the traditions before you, like the legacy of great music, continues with the new generations.
03:01And they're aware of it.
03:02Yes.
03:03And that's the best thing with these guys.
03:06They were always respectful and I was always respectful to them.
03:10And so it's great to see them win.
03:12So it's a great night for me.
03:14Well, I can't wait to watch the documentary.
03:16Thank you so much for stopping and hanging out and talking about us.
03:17I appreciate it.
03:19Take care.
03:19Of course.
