00:00Blessed be, not so much.
00:02A sexy Handmaid's Tale costume has sparked serious outrage online.
00:06As many of us are trying to decide what to be for Halloween,
00:09here's one look you want to stay away from.
00:11This year, online retailer Yandy introduced a costume inspired by Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale,
00:17but the swift criticism has caused the website to take action.
00:20We can't explain this away. They will say that we're part of the resistance.
00:23If you chung that girl one ounce of kindness, she would never have left.
00:27The Handmaid's Tale, starring Elizabeth Moss, imagines a future where women's rights have been stripped away
00:32and they are repeatedly subjected to sexual assault.
00:35In response to what Yandy's calling their Brave Red Maiden costume, one Twitter user said,
00:40I'm dressing up as existential despair this Halloween.
00:42Someone else tweeted, I think I'm going to be sick.
00:45They didn't have one person there to say this might not be a good idea.
00:49And check out this comment, nothing like a sexy rape victim for Halloween. Fun, huh Yandy?
00:54But Yandy was listening. Following the social media outrage,
00:57the retailer removed the item from their website and released a statement saying,
01:01Over the last few hours, it has become obvious that our Yandy Brave Red Maiden costume
01:06is being seen as a symbol of women's oppression rather than an expression of women's empowerment.
01:11This is unfortunate as it was not our intention on any level.
01:14Our initial inspiration to create the piece was through witnessing its use in recent months
01:19as a powerful protest image. Given the sincere, heartfelt response supported by numerous personal stories we've received,
01:25we are removing the costume from our site.
