00:00Welcome back to Newswire here on SportsGrid. Great to catch up with Brett Siegel from Clutch Points.
00:04The NBA trade deadline is fast approaching and certainly one of the biggest names in the NBA has been floated out there as far as a trade is concerned.
00:12Let's check in with Brett on that. Brett, thanks for coming on Newswire. Really appreciate it ahead of this deadline on the 5th.
00:17So look, Milwaukee, they have a very big decision to make. Normally, Brett, in these situations, I say when there's smoke, there's fire.
00:24So I certainly do think that the end is coming to Giannis' career in Milwaukee, but I think it's fair to ask, are the Bucs being a little hasty in making a deal in the next week?
00:36Should they wait until the offseason, which certainly would open this up to more teams being interested?
00:42Well, that's certainly the question that everybody's asking ahead of the deadline is, are the Bucs going to move Giannis on to Takumpa now, or are they going to wait until the offseason?
00:49And honestly, I think that the time is now. And the reason I say that is for two things particularly.
00:55One, the Bucs have leverage right now. And what I mean by that is they can say to teams they want all their draft assets, they want all their young players,
01:02and those teams that are really interested in Giannis, the Bucs will be able to know who those are and what they can specifically get from those teams.
01:09And then the second aspect of a trade right now is that Giannis is going to be eligible for a Supermax contract,
01:14a four-year, well over $240 million contract extension, but he can only get that with a new team if he's traded before this deadline on February 5th.
01:23Otherwise, he has to wait until January of 2027. And time is money, Craig, and these players, they want to sign those contract extensions right away.
01:31And so that's something that will definitely play a factor over the next six days.
01:36Naturally, this time of the year, Brett, there's going to be names and players floated out there.
01:40There's some correlation, though, with some of the teams. We can go through them here.
01:43And then certainly your report here on Golden State, but New York, Miami, Toronto, no surprise there.
01:49We've also heard Oklahoma City get floated because, of course, they have all the draft picks as well.
01:54And you reported the Warriors. So, you know, I did see I don't I don't know if there was a hypothetical or a potential trade that would involve Jimmy Butler.
02:02And I was like, wait a second. How does that make any sense? That guy's out for the year.
02:06But you tell me which team makes the most sense at this point and who has the capital to get it done?
02:11In terms of a one on one trade of just the Bucs and another team being involved, this is the Warriors trade deadline.
02:18It's going all out for Giannis Antetokounmpo. It's leveraging all their draft assets through 2032.
02:23It's putting Jimmy Butler with his what will be an expiring 50 plus million dollar contract next season, putting that on the table.
02:30Jonathan Kaminga, Moses Moody, Brandon Pajemski, all young talents that the Warriors have drafted in the first round over the years that are all going to be included in this trade dialogue with the Bucs.
02:39And Giannis Antetokounmpo, he has been the main target for the Warriors ever since Kevin Durant left in 2019.
02:46And Joe Lakop, who's the owner of the Warriors, has made it very clear that as the player, he would be willing to relinquish all these assets that the Warriors have been holding through the years to go out and get.
02:56Well, that time has come and Giannis Antetokounmpo is available for a trade before this deadline.
03:01And Joe Lakop has six days to prove just how much of those words he's willing to back up.
03:06Yeah, we'll see.
03:07Kaminga also demanding a trade from the Warriors, which makes things easier from the Warriors side when they know they have to trade someone, although maybe leverage a little bit lost there.
03:16Here's the GM of the Warriors, Mike Dunleavy, on the upcoming deadline.
03:21I haven't talked to you, I don't think, since the report of Kaminga's trade demand.
03:25How did you take that?
03:27And does Jimmy's injury alter the way you're approaching what Kaminga could happen to him by the trade deadline?
03:37Yeah, I mean, I think as far as the demand, I'm aware of that.
03:41I think when you, you know, in terms of demands, when you make a demand, there needs to be demand on the market.
03:47So we'll see where that unfolds.
03:50But Hurd, always with these guys, I tell them I'm willing to work with them, you know, want to help people out, whether that's JK or any player on our roster.
04:00So we're good with, you know, if that's his wishes, trying to figure that out.
04:04But we got to do what's best for our organization, and that's what we'll do.
04:07Do you think the Warriors are the most active team coming up here at the deadline, Brett?
04:12Certainly feels like so much smoke surrounding them.
04:14Well, certainly, because they're making everything available for Giannis.
04:17That is the guy that they want.
04:19And like I said, it's the guy that Joe Lacob has signaled through the years, ever since Mike Dunleavy took over as the GM of the Warriors.
04:25That's the player that they want.
04:27And that's the player that they envision being the future of their franchise once Stephen Curry is ready to hang it up and retire.
04:33And I'll tell you this, Craig, they are going to be one of the most aggressive teams.
04:37And quite honestly, I think that they have the best assets to pull off a Giannis trade right now.
04:41But if they don't get Giannis, that's when the questions come up for the Warriors.
04:45Will they do anything?
04:46And quite honestly, I don't think that they will.
04:48I think that it's just they're going to hold on to their assets.
04:50They're going to wait for Giannis, and they're going to be patient because they're not going to be willing to give up everything that they are for Antetokounmpo for any other player in the league.
04:58All right.
04:59Meanwhile, other names that are out there, Anthony Davis, of course, is not going to be a Maverick forever.
05:05We know that.
05:05But it's hard to trade players that are hurt.
05:08I've learned this in all sports.
05:09And so AD out there, John Morant, similar situation here.
05:13A lot of baggage with him.
05:15DeMontis Sabonis may be a little bit easier.
05:17Michael Porter Jr., very easy if the Nets do want to move on from that.
05:21So I guess we'll see what happens, Brett.
05:23You know, sometimes we build these trade deadlines up and nothing happens.
05:26And then other times Luka gets traded.
05:28You know, you just never know what's going to happen in the NBA.
05:31Which one do you think it is this year?
05:32I think that as of right now, a Giannis trade does look likely.
05:37It just really depends on what the Bucs want, because the Warriors package, it is what it is.
05:41It's not going to get better.
05:42It's not going to get worse.
05:43And it's a very strong package compared to what other teams can offer out there.
05:47So if that's what the Bucs want, Giannis could be heading to Golden State.
05:50Obviously, you've seen the Knicks, the Minnesota Timberwolves, Miami Heat involved there as well.
05:55And we could see more assets become available in the offseason for Giannis.
05:58But that's the big star that everybody's waiting to see of what's going to happen there.
06:03Obviously, some of those other names, like you mentioned, Anthony Davis, John Morant, Michael Porter Jr.
06:08It doesn't seem like those three guys are going to be on the move.
06:10They've been involved in rumors leading up to the deadline.
06:12But there's just not a market for many of those guys.
06:15And quite honestly, teams aren't willing to give up the picks that would be necessary to get them.
06:20So unless Giannis has traded, I don't see the Miami Heat circling back for a John Morant trade.
06:25Of course, anything can change.
06:26And after the Luka Doncic trade last year, you would never really know.
06:29But it really does seem like that everybody's waiting to see what happens with Giannis first before making a move.
06:34It does make sense.
06:35You know, Brett, in watching these things transpire through the years.
06:39And look, I understand all the things that have happened with John Morant.
06:43But simply put, I guess I would put it to you like this.
06:45Have we seen a star of this caliber and this age so young fall so quickly from grace to be a player that is not only going for very little potentially in a trade, but almost an untradeable player?
06:59It's sort of unprecedented in this league because the player is still good.
07:03Well, he's certainly not untradeable.
07:04There's teams out there that would be interested in him.
07:07It's just the Grizzlies asking price.
07:09He's still the face of their franchise, and they don't want to give him up for what the Atlanta Hawks just got for Trey Young, which was CJ McCollum.
07:15And Corey Kispert with no draft picks, no real young talents to build your future around.
07:20And so that's what the Grizzlies want.
07:22If they can get a first-round pick from a team and they can get, like, one or two young talents, then they'd be willing to listen on John Morant trades.
07:30But that just has not happened to this point.
07:32The Miami Heat have been wanting to get a Trey Young-type deal for John Morant.
07:37And so that's where the market is.
07:38There's no teams that are really willing to give up assets for him at this time.
07:41But John Morant's certainly still an all-star-level talent when he's healthy.
07:44He's just in a bad situation right now where he's not seeing eye-to-eye with the Grizzlies organization.
07:50And so maybe this offseason we'll see those two sides part.
07:53All right, Brett, before we go, any other deals you anticipate or any other players to keep an eye on over the next week?
08:00Well, the Cleveland Cavaliers have been very active ahead of the trade deadline.
08:03They're currently the league's only second apron team, and they're looking to get below that mark right now.
08:08And so DeAndre Hunter has been a name coming up in trade talks.
08:11They have held dialogue with the Los Angeles Lakers as of late.
08:15And talks have been progressing so far where the Lakers have been talking about Rui Hachimura, Dalton Connect, being pieces that could go back.
08:21There's even talk of a third team in the Brooklyn Nets possibly getting involved to facilitate salary.
08:26So DeAndre Hunter stuff is moving.
08:28They're also looking to trade Lonzo Ball in Cleveland.
08:30And then over in Sacramento, Keon Ellis is a name that almost everybody in the league is talking about.
08:35Every team has reached out about Ellis since he's on a minimum-like contract.
08:40And also, the Kings are looking to get off DeMar DeRozan and Malik Monk's salary.
08:43So perhaps there's a deal that could be worked out there that doesn't involve all this Giannis drama.
08:48But until that first big domino falls, Craig, all eyes are going to be on Milwaukee and waiting to see what the decision is there.
08:54All right, we will see over the next week.
08:57Brett, thanks again for coming on Newswire.
08:58Really appreciate it.
08:59And we'll catch up again soon.
09:00Thanks again.
09:01Appreciate it.
