00:00The Welsh Ambulance Service has revealed some of the non-emergency calls made.
00:05to 999 in the past year. Among them was someone with a sore throat, someone with a
00:10wobbly tooth and someone with ointment in their eye. One person called 999
00:15because they had accidentally swallowed mouthwash, while another called with a fishing hook in their finger.
00:20Of the 414,118 incidents last year, 15%
00:25which is 62,454 were not appropriate for the
00:30Ambulance Service, roughly one in every seven. The Trust is reminding the public to only call
00:35999 if someone is seriously ill or injured. The NHS 111 Wales
00:40website or phone number should be a first port of call for advice and information.
00:45Pharmacists offer free advice and over-the-counter medicines for common ailments like coughs and cold.
00:50While minor injury units can deal with minor burns, bites and stings.
00:55The service has changed the way it deals with 999 calls with a new 5-tier call category
01:00system being piloted.
01:01Three new categories which replace the current
01:05amber and green categories and build upon the purple arrest and red emergency.
01:10three new categories already introduced in July for the most life-threatening cause have been
01:15designed to improve care for patients and ensure that they get the right response for their needs.
01:20Purple arrest for patients in cardiac or respiratory arrest who need an
01:25ambulance immediately. Red emergency for patients at high risk of
01:30cardiac or respiratory arrest like someone who's choking and also
01:35needs help immediately. Orange now. For serious conditions
01:40requiring a face-to-face clinical assessment, tests and transfer to hospital or
01:45specialist care. Like someone with a suspected stroke. Yellow soon.
01:50For patients who need a more thorough assessment over the phone or face-to-face before we decide how
01:55how to treat them. Like someone with abdominal pain. They could stay at home or we
02:00may arrange transport to a clinic or hospital. And green planned. For less
02:05urgent calls like someone with a chest infection. These patients can usually be treated safely
02:10safely at home with the right to care from local services. Under the new approach,
02:15rapid clinical screening by paramedics and nurses in the control room also helps to identify
02:20time sensitive conditions more quickly to deliver a safer service and improve outcomes.
02:25for patients. The way Welsh Government measures our performance is changing too.
02:30as part of a continued focus on the quality of care we provide, rather than how many minutes
02:35it takes us to arrive. The key measure for purple calls is
02:40the percentage of cardiac arrest patients successfully resuscitated on arrival at hospital.
02:45which represents our broader ambition to improve cardiac arrest survival rates in Wales.
02:50every second counts in a cardiac arrest and early intervention.
02:55often from a bystander will give a person the best possible chance of survival.
