Indonesia installs thermal scanners in major airports following Nipah virus outbreak in India

Indonesia begins running thermal scanners at its major airports, including on the resort island of Bali, on Jan. 28, 2026, following an outbreak of the Nipah virus in India. At least 5.89 million foreign tourists visited Bali last year, according to the island's statistics bureau, including those from India. The virus, which is carried by fruit bats and animals such as pigs, can cause fever and brain inflammation and has a fatality rate of between 40 percent and 75 percent. Although it can spread from person to person, transmission is not easy and typically requires prolonged contact with an infected individual.
