02:05What?
02:10But first, our top story and our top focus tonight, a tragedy.
02:15In Maharashtra, Maharashtra's deputy chief minister, six times deputy.
02:21Ajit Pawar is no more.
02:24Ajit Pawar.
02:25Ajit Pawar died in an air crash this morning at Baramati, a town.
02:30A town which was associated with him and the Pawar family.
02:35In a sense, has lost its guardian.
02:38The reasons for that aircraft.
02:40Ash are not known yet.
02:42Several theories are doing the rounds.
02:45I will first bring you the sequence of events that led to the plane crashing.
02:50Just meters away from the runway at Baramati small airport.
02:55At 8.45 am this morning.
02:58It's our top story.
03:00We have now.
03:01We've got a good part of the plane.
03:02We've got to Rafael.
03:03In the present, we have a good plan.
03:04It's our top story.
03:05In the past, we have a good plan.
03:07Welcome back.
03:08If there's something you got, we're good.
03:09We don't have to go.
03:10There are some different things.
03:11What are we going now?
03:12In the past, come back.
03:13In the past, we have to go with our first on this.
03:15We have to go.
03:16What are we going to try to do with our current?
03:17We frequently have to go to this.
03:18We have to go.
03:20We can go to some more.
03:22We do have to go.
03:23We can go.
03:24We'll keep going.
03:25We can go.
03:26Let's go.
03:27We need to go.
03:28NCP Chief Ajit Anant Rao Pawar in a plane crash on Wednesday.
03:33NCP Chief Ajit Anant Rao Pawar in a plane crash on Wednesday.
03:38The Learjet 45XR twin-engine aircraft crash-landed nearly 50m.
03:43away from the runway of the local airport, killing all five on board.
03:48NCP Chief Ajit Anant Rao Pawar in a plane crash on Wednesday.
03:53NCP Chief Ajit Anant Rao Pawar in a plane crash on Wednesday.
03:58He has joined by NCP Chief Ajit Anant Rao Pawar.
04:01So we need to know the whole mission.
04:03Thank you very much.
04:08I don't think it's a plane, it feels like it's a plane.
04:13That's not too low I mean
04:26It was too low
04:28It was too low
04:18It feels like the air trap came from the house, but the air trap came from the house, but the air trap came from the house.
04:23The sequence of events that...
04:28...that led to the crash pose several questions.
04:33The aircraft first came in contact with Baramati.
04:38The aircraft's next call was...
04:43...when the plane was 30 nautical miles away from Baramati.
04:47They were advised to descend...
04:48...and in our pilot's discretion.
04:50The crew inquired about the winds and visibility.
04:53They were informed that the winds were calm and visibility was around 3000 meters.
04:58The aircraft reported on the final approach of Runaway 11, but the...
05:03...the runaway was not in sight to them.
05:05The plane turned around.
05:07After the go-around...
05:08...the aircraft was asked about its position and the crew reported on the final approach of...
05:13...Runaway 11.
05:14The crew was asked to report if the runaway was in sight.
05:18The crew initially replied and I quote...
05:20...Runaway is currently not in sight.
05:23...will call when runaway is in sight.
05:25Unquote.
05:26After a few seconds...
05:27...the crew...
05:28...reported that the runaway was in sight.
05:31The aircraft was cleared to land and run...
05:33...at 8-43 AM ISG.
05:35However, they did not give a...
05:38back of the landing clearance next the ATC saw flames around
05:43threshold of runaway 11 at 8.44 a.m. IST there was
05:48no mayday or any kind of distress call by the pilot to ATC before the crash
05:53which has now added to the mystery behind the crash
05:58the pilot's decision you know he made an approach from runaway
06:032.9 and then he carried out a missed approach after which again
06:08he tried to make an attempt from runaway 11 this is what I also have no contract
06:13with the pilots they are not there incidentally Baramati
06:18is an uncontrolled airfield traffic information is provided by the instructor
06:23and pilots from the flying training organizations at Baramati who man the ATC
06:28the sequence of events released
06:33by the government is based on the info given by the persons handling the ATC when the crash
06:38took place soon after the crash emergency
06:43services were rushed to the site the wreckage of the aircraft was located on the left
06:48side of runaway 11 the aircraft accident investigation bureau has
06:53now taken over the investigation
06:58the mystery over why and how the plane crash landed still remains uncertain
07:03便 reports india today
07:08Soon after the news of the air crash and Ajit Pawar's passing,
07:13away, reached the political capital of the country, tributes poured
07:18in. Politicians cutting across party lines offered their condolences.
07:23to the Pawar family. Many of them have called for a detailed and
07:28thorough probe into the causes of the accident. Listen in.

09:00is
09:05Thank you very much.
09:10powers that would be the producer he died
09:15today morning a plane crash I'm really shocked
09:20to see the news there is no safety and security of the people of
09:25this country even the political leaders I do not know
09:30what is the fate of the opposition political parties but he was very much with the ruling party
09:35but before few days ago I came to know that from society
09:40network that somebody from other party they gave a statement
09:45that other thought is willing to live the bjp and
09:50now what happened today I need proper investigation under the supervision of supreme court
09:55only we have the trust on supreme court no other agency all the agency
10:00are being totally purchased and really it's a great loss for the country
10:05I need to know that it should happen because it is an accident
10:10It has become unnatural, it has become unnatural, it has become unnatural.
10:15can happen on the other side of the country.
10:20It was also a very big accident.
10:25It was a big plane, a big plane.
10:28It was a great plane.
10:30Oh, I saw what I'm just going on a day.
10:35And while the tributes flow in for Ajit Pawar as well as demands for a...
10:40...probe, I want to raise certain big questions about air safety.
10:45What does the absence of a Mayday call indicate in this case?
10:50If visibility was 3000 meters, why was the first landing aboard?
10:55Why was there no readback after the ATC cleared the landing?
11:00Why did the aircraft miss the runway during the second landing?
11:04And importantly...
11:05...is an uncontrolled small airfield like Baramati, an accident waiting to happen.
11:10My guests include Captain Sam Thomas, President Airlines Pilot Association of...
11:15...India Sanjay Lazar, Aviation Expert of Lazarus...
11:20...A CEO, Alva Life Consultants is joining us. I want to come...
11:25...you Captain Thomas first, this idea of an uncontrolled airfield.
11:30A small airfield like Baramati where the capital...
11:35...or the pilot has to often rely on his own discretion.
11:38The ATC is located...
11:40...in Pune, is it an accident waiting to happen? Is it far more dangerous?
11:45When you are landing a small private aircraft...
11:50...in a small airport like Baramati?
11:54Good evening, first of all.
11:55It's absolutely distressing to come on air each...
12:00...in time for a tragic event like this.
12:03A heartfelt condolence to the...
12:05...the honourable minister's family.
12:08And our heart goes out to...
12:10...that young little girl who was the co-pilot of this airplane.
12:15And Captain Sumit Kapoor was a few years senior to me.
12:19He has briefed...
12:20...he worked with us in Jet Airways...
12:22...as well as Air Sahara.
12:25Having said that to your question of our uncontrolled...
12:30...airfields dangerous?
12:31Not necessarily.
12:33Uncontrolled airfields are...
12:35...are there all over the world.
12:37And I do fly business jets into...
12:40...many uncontrolled airfields.
12:42However, in today's day and age...
12:45...I don't understand why we do not have navigational aids.
12:50That are making...
12:52...approaches to these kinds of airports.
12:55...many uncontrolled airfields very easy.
12:57I believe today that whatever information...
13:00...that we have...
13:01...this was a case of low visibility.
13:04When you say...
13:05...3,200 meters...
13:07...when you have visual flight rules...
13:09...it generally...
13:10...requires...
13:11...five kilometers.
13:12Now...
13:13...what has happened?
13:15We absolutely will not know without...
13:18...DFDR and ATC truck.
13:20...transcripts.
13:21The cockpit voice recorders...
13:23...the ATC transcripts.
13:25And...
13:26...as...
13:27...we...
13:28...keep coming on the channels...
13:30...to tell you...
13:31...sometimes...
13:32...it's not very nice to tell you...
13:33...I told you so.
13:35...particularly in tragic events.
13:37Now this...
13:38...company has had...
13:40...another air crash...
13:41...a couple of years back.
13:43The report of that...
13:44...has not yet come out.
13:45So...
13:46...what...
13:47...we'd like to draw your...
13:48...attention right now...
13:50...is to the scene of the accident.
13:52Did you see the visuals there?
13:53It...
13:54...is a pic...
13:55...a picnic spot.
13:56There are...
13:57...policemen there...
13:58...who don't know...
13:59...what they are there for.
14:00The least they can be...
14:01...doing...
14:02...is to...
14:03...coorden that area off.
14:04That's complete...
14:06...uh...
14:07...sanitization of that area...
14:08...is required...
14:09...because that's complete...
14:10...is completely filled with evidence.
14:11Now...
14:12...what we see there is...
14:13...everybody is trampling over that.
14:15And...
14:16...people are passing judgments...
14:17...on what has happened.
14:18So...
14:19...like I said earlier...
14:20...we do not have the requisite information...
14:23...to...
14:24...tell you...
14:25...how this particular...
14:26...airplane crashed.
14:27Was this...
14:28...Liarjet a problem?
14:29No...
14:30...Liarjet 45...
14:30...is a very good airplane...
14:31...and...
14:32...it...
14:33...by no means...
14:34...is an easy...
14:35...airplane to fly.
14:36Let me tell you that...
14:37...it was one of the fastest...
14:38...corporate jets...
14:39...built in its time.
14:40So it...
14:41...requires a lot of...
14:42...skill...
14:43...and...
14:44...the crew had the requisite...
14:45...because...
14:46...about 15,000 hours...
14:47...and...
14:48...knowing the...
14:49...ah...
14:50...pilot...
14:50...in command...
14:51...I don't think...
14:52...skill was...
14:53...particularly a problem...
14:54...but to your question...
14:55...of whether...
14:56...uncontrolled air spaces...
14:57...are dangerous...
14:58...not...
14:59...necessarily...
15:00...but...
15:00...yes...
15:01...they are a challenge...
15:05...I'm also joined...
15:06...at this moment...
15:07...by Captain Amit Singh...
15:08...who looks very closely...
15:09...at flights...
15:10...safety...
15:11...appreciate...
15:12...you also joining us...
15:13...Captain...
15:14...but...
15:15...I want to come to you...
15:16...Sanjay...
15:17...the directorate general of civil aviation...
15:20...ah...
15:21...says that they had...
15:22...conducted a regulatory audit...
15:23...of the...
15:24...aircraft...
15:25...owner...
15:26...BSR...
15:27...17-plane fleet...
15:28...including the crash...
15:29...aircraft...
15:30...in February...
15:31...2025...
15:32...and we are told...
15:33...that the aircraft...
15:34...was fully air worthy...
15:36...therefore...
15:37...or...
15:38...would it be...
15:39...completely unfair...
15:40...sensationalist...
15:41...to suggest...
15:42...that...
15:43...this was an...
15:44...aircraft...
15:45...that was not...
15:46...air worthy...
15:47...the CGCA makes it very clear...
15:48...that they had...
15:49...conducted a...
15:50...regulatory audit...
15:51...of all the...
15:52...aircraft of VSR...
15:53...in February...
15:54...2025...
15:55...that's just...
15:56...under a year ago...
15:57...well Rajdeep...
15:58...thank you...
15:59...for having me...
16:00...to show...
16:01...first point...
16:02...before I...
16:02...I get to...
16:03...you know...
16:04...I also want to point out...
16:05...which Captain Sam...
16:06...probably...
16:07...there are two...
16:07...playing academies...
16:08...that have been at...
16:09...Baramati...
16:10...over the last...
16:11...at least...
16:12...Kawar has been there...
16:13...for 30 years...
16:12...Kawar Aviation Academy...
16:13...and you've got...
16:14...you had Redbird...
16:15...which came in...
16:16...so there are a lot of...
16:17...student pilots...
16:18...also...
16:19...who operate...
16:20...in and out of...
16:21...Baramati...
16:22...they don't have...
16:22...night flying...
16:23...but they also don't have...
16:24...visual aid...
16:25...you know...
16:26...automated aids...
16:27...like he said...
16:28...that's one point...
16:29...as far as the...
16:30...DGCS statement...
16:31...and I did read it...
16:32...they do claim...
16:33...to have done...
16:34...audit...
16:35...of this...
16:36...company...
16:37...and this...
16:37...particular aircraft...
16:38...last year...
16:39...the point...
16:40...that Sam...
16:41...mentioned...
16:42...is very important...
16:42...there's a 2023...
16:43...crash...
16:44...of the same...
16:45...company...
16:46...similar...
16:47...type...
16:47...of...
16:48...you know...
16:49...learjet...
16:50...45...
16:51...XL...
16:52...in Mumbai...
16:52...not yet...
16:53...come out...
16:54...of the report...
16:55...is three years...
16:56...since then...
16:57...isn't that...
16:58...an indicator...
16:57...of some...
16:58...you know...
16:59...where we are...
17:00...stuck at...
17:01...in our system...
17:02...the second thing is...
17:02...of course...
17:03...they've done a check...
17:04...but we...
17:05...you know...
17:06...and aircraft is...
17:07...is a machine...
17:08...at the end of the day...
17:09...you know...
17:10...you know...
17:11...and aircraft is...
17:12...is a machine...
17:13...at the end of the day...
17:14...we know here...
17:15...that this pilot was...
17:16...a very senior...
17:17...qualified pilot...
17:18...he'd flown on...
17:19...bigger aircraft...
17:20...and big airlines...
17:21...as well as this...
17:22...15,000 hours...
17:23...in command...
17:24...and he did a go-around...
17:25...there was...
17:26...apparently...
17:27...low visibility...
17:28...which the DGCSA...
17:29...and we don't know...
17:31...what happened...
17:32...that made the plane...
17:33...wear off into that...
17:34...you know...
17:35...whether you call it...
17:36...a gorge...
17:37...or a ravine...
17:38...or the side shoulder...
17:39...which is of this...
17:39...table top...
17:40...I think...
17:41...our regulator...
17:42...needs...
17:43...more regulation...
17:44...that's what...
17:44...I'd like to say...
17:45...I have long since...
17:46...said it...
17:47...including on your...
17:48...channel...
17:49...earlier...
17:49...we need...
17:50...a restructuring...
17:51...of our organization...
17:52...because we have...
17:53...become too big...
17:54...as an aviation...
17:54...nation...
17:55...you know...
17:56...and we are growing...
17:57...exponentially...
17:58...every year...
17:59...so we need to look...
17:59...at restructuring...
18:00...the DGCA...
18:01...you know...
18:02...the bill...
18:03...CAA bill...
18:04...which I think...
18:05...Sanath Kaul mentioned...
18:06...on your show...
18:07...a month ago...
18:08...when I was there...
18:09...and that seems...
18:09...to be...
18:10...the need of the hour...
18:11...at this point...
18:12...Rajdeep...
18:13...
18:14...you know...
18:16...I just for a moment...
18:17...want to focus though...
18:18...on VVIP...
18:19...these...
18:20...travelling...
18:21...in these aircraft...
18:22...Captain Amit Singh...
18:23...your founder...
18:24...safety matters...
18:24...and former head...
18:25...flight...
18:26...operations...
18:27...and safety...
18:28...I want to understand from you...
18:29...in cases like this...
18:30...with low visibility...
18:31...should the pilot...
18:32...in an ideal world...
18:34...just turned back...
18:35...gone to Pune...
18:36...rather than push...
18:37...for a second landing...
18:38...there was...
18:39...because Mr. Pawar...
18:40...had a series of meetings...
18:41...scheduled...
18:42...Zilla Parishad...
18:43...elections...
18:44...there was possibly...
18:45...pressure on the pilot...
18:46...to land at that moment...
18:47...does it become more difficult...
18:49...when you are dealing with...
18:50...VVIPs...
18:51...who are working...
18:52...to tight deadlines...
18:53...often have to go...
18:54...to even take the risk...
18:55...or take a chance...
18:56...in low visibility?
18:59Well...
19:00...that is always...
19:01...a pressure...
19:02...need not be said...
19:04...that somebody instructed...
19:05...even without instructions...
19:06...if there is a VVIP...
19:07...on board...
19:08...it...
19:09...then...
19:10...kind of a pressure...
19:11...that I have to perform...
19:12...and a missed approach...
19:13...diver...
19:14...overversion...
19:15...all these are...
19:16...negative connotations...
19:17...and...
19:18...from a pilot's perspective...
19:19...their job is...
19:20...to fly from A to B...
19:21...and...
19:22...if they divert...
19:23...or...
19:24...go-round...
19:25...it is taken...
19:26...psychologically...
19:27...as a failure...
19:28...kind of a failure...
19:29...not exactly failure...
19:30...so there has to be...
19:31...a kind of...
19:32...human factor...
19:33...investigation...
19:34...and...
19:35...I have written...
19:36...a paper on this...
19:37...that has been published...
19:38...in the Cambridge...
19:39...university called...
19:40...Cognitive Lockup...
19:41...why pilots...
19:42...do not go round...
19:44...but this is...
19:45...not purely...
19:46...a case of...
19:47...low visibility...
19:48...it is a systemic...
19:49...problem...
19:50...and it could happen...
19:51...anywhere else...
19:52...even without...
19:53...a VVIP...
19:54...because if you talk...
19:55...about uncontrolled...
19:56...day space...
19:57...then uncontrolled...
19:58...day space...
19:59What was the systemic...
19:59...problem...
20:00...what was the systemic...
20:01...problem...
20:04...the systemic...
20:06...problem is...
20:07...that...
20:08...yes...
20:09...airworthy...
20:10...but...
20:11...the systems...
20:12...are approved...
20:13...and audited...
20:14...by DGCA...
20:15...so the checks...
20:16...are carried out...
20:17...by the engineer...
20:18...but the systems...
20:19...are approved...
20:20...and audited...
20:21...and every time...
20:22...there is an accident...
20:23...there is a special audit...
20:24...so what is the outcome...
20:25...of the audit...
20:26...nobody knows...
20:27...there are regular...
20:28...audits...
20:29...why don't the regular...
20:29...fuller audits...
20:30...fulfill the needs...
20:31...that...
20:32...there is a need...
20:33...for a special audit...
20:34...so that is...
20:34...just...
20:35...basically...
20:36...to...
20:37...show to the public...
20:38...in one of...
20:39...the investigation reports...
20:40...in a flying school...
20:41...accident...
20:42...the investigator...
20:43...at the end of it...
20:44...wrote...
20:44...that...
20:45...soon after the accident...
20:46...the flying school was closed...
20:47...and...
20:48...there was...
20:49...a DGCA audit...
20:49...the purpose of the DGCA audit...
20:50...was...
20:51...to leave...
20:52...option...
20:53...not to...
20:54...find...
20:54...both...
20:55...had done it...
20:56...in the right spirit...
20:57...the accident...
20:58...wouldn't have happened...
20:59...so...
21:00...that...
21:01...we are doing things...
21:02...we do an audit...
21:03...special audit...
21:04...and there is...
21:04...a lot of...
21:05...human cry...
21:06...but...
21:07...actually...
21:08...one part of it...
21:09...no...
21:09...no...
21:10...no...
21:11...no...
21:12...no...
21:13...no...
21:14...but...
21:15...you know...
21:16...captain Sam Thomas...
21:17...do you believe...
21:19...for that...
21:20...when there is this...
21:21...demand being made...
21:22...there is a thorough...
21:23...probe...
21:24...who should conduct this...
21:24...probe...
21:25...at the end of the day...
21:26...the DGCA conducts the probe...
21:27...who is...
21:28...who...
21:29...would you believe...
21:30...is best place to conduct a probe...
21:32...and...
21:33...is there a way to minimize...
21:34...the risk factor...
21:35...I come back to it...
21:36...there are...
21:37...you know...
21:38...Indian...
21:39...Indian skies today...
21:39...have...
21:40...thousands of planes...
21:41...lots of small planes...
21:42...ah...
21:43...flying VVI...
21:44...in particular...
21:45...to the smaller...
21:46...airfields...
21:47...who should conduct the...
21:49...pole...
21:50...so that...
21:51...an element of trust...
21:52...can be restored...
21:54...as the...
21:55...at the moment...
21:56...uh...
21:57...we are not very upbeat...
21:58...about the agencies...
21:59...of conducting...
22:00...probe...
22:01...I put it to you...
22:02...that if...
22:03...captain Amit Singh...
22:04...sanjay...
22:05...and me...
22:06...were to come...
22:07...and audit...
22:08...your India today...
22:09...what do we know...
22:10...about the audit...
22:09...or the functioning...
22:10...of India today...
22:11...so we will not be able...
22:12...to...
22:13...come out with a...
22:14...qualitative report...
22:15...that is actually...
22:16...worth...
22:17...being called an audit...
22:19...so that...
22:20...that is exactly...
22:21...a paper exercise...
22:22...that...
22:23...is being conducted...
22:24...in most of the...
22:24...accidents...
22:26...and...
22:27...like I said...
22:28...let's just take the...
22:29...instance of...
22:30...a King Air...
22:31...that went off the runway...
22:32...about...
22:33...110...
22:34...days...
22:35...back...
22:36...the...
22:37...AAIB...
22:38...which is...
22:39...supposed to be...
22:39...tasked...
22:40...with the investigation...
22:41...has not even opened...
22:42...the file...
22:43...so...
22:44...when...
22:44...we met the...
22:45...AAIB...
22:46...they were so...
22:47...upbeat...
22:48...about their...
22:49...capability...
22:49...while...
22:50...they were...
22:51...investigating...
22:52...the Air India...
22:53...171...
22:54...we put...
22:54...to you...
22:55...that...
22:56...they don't even...
22:57...will not even...
22:58...get to the...
22:59...preliminary stages...
23:00...from the...
23:01...preliminary word...
23:02...we also would like...
23:03...to draw your attention...
23:04...to the...
23:04...preliminary report...
23:05...which was...
23:06...published by...
23:07...AAIB...
23:08...what an...
23:09...international joke...
23:09...that was...
23:10...so...
23:11...we do not...
23:12...we are not upbeat...
23:13...about...
23:14...what is...
23:14...going to come out of this...
23:15...so...
23:16...what...
23:17...we are saying...
23:18...is that...
23:19...until such time...
23:20...that...
23:21...we come...
23:22...up to...
23:23...speed...
23:24...with...
23:25...actual air crash...
23:24...investigations...
23:25...we need an...
23:26...international body...
23:27...a third...
23:28...ampire of sorts...
23:29...to come...
23:29...and look at this...
23:30...and in the meantime...
23:31...all...
23:32...agencies...
23:33...like...
23:34...the police...
23:35...be instructed...
23:36...that...
23:37...if an incident...
23:38...like this...
23:39...happens...
23:40...please...
23:41...from there...
23:42...and...
23:43...just see to it...
23:44...that...
23:45...the place...
23:46...is sanitized...
23:46...no evidence...
23:47...is lost...
23:48...only then...
23:49...can we come...
23:50...to...
23:51...at least...
23:51...the ordinary...
23:52...stage of...
23:53...investigating...
23:54...the accident...
23:56...you know...
23:59...I want to understand...
24:00...two other questions...
24:01...that...
24:02...this air crashes...
24:03...the absence of a...
24:04...mayday call...
24:05...what does that...
24:06...indicate...
24:06...if anything...
24:07...the fact that...
24:08...there was apparently...
24:09...no mayday call...
24:10...what does that...
24:11...indicate...
24:11...anything at all...
24:14...no it could indicate...
24:15...that the pilots...
24:16...were in control...
24:17...of the aircraft...
24:18...till the last minute...
24:19...before they realized...
24:20...that things...
24:21...were hopelessly...
24:21...and...
24:22...a crashes...
24:23...accident is imminent...
24:24...had they...
24:25...known...
24:26...that there was...
24:27...an engine failure...
24:28...or a technical problem...
24:29...they would have analyzed...
24:30...and gone...
24:31...through the...
24:32...mitigation plan...
24:33...troubleshooting...
24:34...and then...
24:35...decided to...
24:36...transmit...
24:36...to create a mayday...
24:37...so mayday...
24:38...is basically...
24:39...uh...
24:40...uh...
24:41...if...
24:41...you look at...
24:42...the voice...
24:43...for example...
24:44...in the Ahmedabad...
24:45...accident...
24:46...the voice...
24:47...transmitted by the pilot...
24:48...of mayday...
24:49...was very calm...
24:50...and composed...
24:51...there was no panic...
24:51...so...
24:52...psychological...
24:53...it's called...
24:54...dissonance...
24:55...the physical part...
24:56...is separated...
24:56...from the mind...
24:57...while...
24:58...there is...
24:59...panic...
25:00...when...
25:01...the pilot see...
25:01...that...
25:02...there is an opportunity...
25:03...to get saved...
25:04...there is an opportunity...
25:05...for escape...
25:06...that is where the panic...
25:06...the voice comes...
25:07...but otherwise...
25:08...a car mayday call...
25:09...is when...
25:10...that you have given up...
25:11...it is imminent...
25:11...that accident...
25:12...has to happen...
25:13...so...
25:14...is a thought of...
25:15...thought process...
25:16...it does not come...
25:17...naturally...
25:18...and pilots...
25:19...till the last minute...
25:20...were trying...
25:21...both the cases...
25:21...they would have...
25:22...tried to...
25:23...avoid...
25:24...mishap...
25:25...there is another thing...
25:26...while you were talking...
25:27...about...
25:28...small aircraft...
25:29...can I just ask...
25:31...sorry...
25:32...sorry...
25:33...sorry to stop you...
25:34...I just want to ask...
25:35...two more technical questions...
25:36...one to you...
25:37...captain...
25:38...thomas...
25:39...why was there...
25:40...no readback...
25:41...after the ATC...
25:41...a cleared landing...
25:42...can you explain...
25:43...why that would happen?
25:44Normally...
25:45...we should...
25:46...have...
25:47...a clear...
25:48...readback...
25:49...but from what I'm...
25:50...trying to...
25:51...figure out...
25:52...and whatever messages...
25:53...I got from Baramati...
25:54...incidentally...
25:55...I...
25:56...did a few...
25:56...flights in...
25:57...Baramati...
25:58...a friend of mine...
25:59...owns a...
26:00...flight school there...
26:01...flew a small...
26:02...twin engine...
26:03...I'm familiar...
26:04...with that runway...
26:05...now...
26:06...I put it...
26:06...to you...
26:07...that the visibility...
26:08...was not 3,200 meters...
26:09...because in 3,200 meters...
26:11...it's more than...
26:12...3 kilometers...
26:13...I can see the runway...
26:14...so...
26:15...that...
26:16...is again...
26:17...questionable...
26:18...these...
26:19...are the factors...
26:20...that people...
26:21...in the know...
26:22...must be...
26:23...asked to...
26:24...contribute...
26:25...as far...
26:26...as the investigation...
26:27...is...
26:28...concerned...
26:29...now...
26:30...there is...
26:31...like you...
26:32...earlier said...
26:31...there is pressure...
26:32...when VVIPs are there...
26:33...if you recollect...
26:34...the...
26:35...CDS...
26:36...who...
26:37...passed away...
26:38...in a helicopter crash...
26:39...in...
26:40...in...
26:41...OT...
26:42...in Wellington...
26:43...that aircraft...
26:44...was being flown...
26:45...by the CEO...
26:46...of the squadron...
26:46...in Sulu...
26:47...so...
26:48...the topmost guys...
26:49...do come under pressure...
26:50...and...
26:51...we'd like to...
26:52...tell...
26:53...that...
26:54...there are...
26:55...innumerable...
26:56...examples...
26:56...Chief Minister...
26:57...Raj Shekhar Reddy...
26:58...Speaker...
26:59...Bale Yogi...
27:00...these were...
27:01...all people...
27:01...who...
27:02...had...
27:03...in some way...
27:04...inadvertently...
27:05...put pressure...
27:06...on the...
27:06...the pilot...
27:07...to complete...
27:08...the mission...
27:09...this is where...
27:10...it had happened...
27:11...you have pointed out...
27:12...a very...
27:11...pertinent fact...
27:12...yes...
27:13...that pressure is there...
27:14...read back...
27:15...why was it not...
27:16...there...
27:17...can only be...
27:18...figured out...
27:19...once we have...
27:20...the ATC transcripts...
27:21...because...
27:21...it's almost...
27:22...reflex...
27:23...for a pilot...
27:24...to say...
27:25...clear to land...
27:26...so and so...
27:26...to that he can...
27:27...go ahead...
27:28...and do whatever...
27:29...he has to do...
27:30...but this...
27:31...doesn't seem...
27:32...to be a 3...
27:311,200-meter visibility accident.
27:36Very quickly, Sanjay Lazar, I just have a minute on this part of the show.
27:41Just a final comment, do you believe that, you know, the
27:46worst thing we can do is jump to any conclusions as was the tendency particularly.
27:51With the Ahmedabad air crash in June, this is a moment to reflect and perhaps...
27:56rather than jump to any conclusions, allow the investigation in a time-bound way.
28:01Absolutely, Rajdeep. First of all, like, you know...
28:06Sam said, condolences go out to the family of those who passed away in this...
28:11tragedy. I myself had dealt with Ajit Dada numerous times, 15 years ago.
28:16when we broke off and joined this union.
28:19So, you know, stickler...
28:21Stickler for timing, stickler for detail, woke up at 5 a.m.
28:24Yes, I do hope that because...
28:26this is such an important event, as all tragedies are.
28:31that we do get a time-bound investigation.
28:33I dearly hope that somebody takes cognizance.
28:36and starts restructuring and reforming our regulator.
28:40Let's have quality...
28:41certified aviators, engineers, technicians...
28:44at the helm of that organization.
28:46You know, God knows we need a PIL to get this correct because...
28:50it's high time.
28:51We are growing in leaps and bounds in this country.
28:54Right.
28:55So, that's all I hope for.
28:56and a quick report.
29:01You know, Captain Amit Singh, just on the last point, why did the...
29:06aircraft miss the runway during a second landing bid?
29:09Do you believe that's the visibility factor?
29:11a quick response?
29:12Well, not just the visibility...
29:16the visibility, of course, would have been low...
29:19but the sun would be in their eyes.
29:21the sun is rising...
29:22from the east.
29:23So, that also affects...
29:25that...
29:26that scatters the light and the glare and everything.
29:29So, there could be a possibility...
29:31of an illusion or...
29:33a black hole effect...
29:34that we call...
29:35which...
29:36that...
29:37basically...
29:38when the visual profile is there...
29:39Right.
29:40pilots tend to duck under.
29:41So, go under the profile...
29:43because of lack of references on the sites.
29:45So...
29:46a lot of issues...
29:47which have to be dealt...
29:48but...
29:49frankly speaking...
29:50AIP will not be in the...
29:51position...
29:52to deal with...
29:53because they don't have the experts...
29:54on human factors...
29:55to find out...
29:56what the root cause...
29:56they can...
29:57at best...
29:58say that...
29:59the pilot did this.
30:00So, that is where...
30:01is going to conclude.
30:03Let's...
30:04you know...
30:05as I said...
30:06we don't...
30:06want to blame anyone...
30:07at this stage...
30:08the worst thing...
30:09you can do...
30:10is jump to conclusions...
30:11these are just...
30:12some of the unanswered...
30:11questions...
30:12and we hope...
30:13that those questions...
30:14will be answered...
30:15by experts...
30:16in a time-bound...
30:17manner...
30:18this is a...
30:19air crash...
30:20that has once again...
30:21raised several...
30:21regarding issues...
30:22particularly...
30:23when VVIPs...
30:24are involved...
30:25I thank my guests...

31:41Always the bridesmaid, never the bride.
31:46Ajit Pawar took oath as Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra six times.
31:51But never could climb the ladder any further.
31:56He made no bones about his ambition of becoming the Chief Minister at least once.
32:01One of the reasons for him breaking ranks with his uncle is
32:06and mentor Sharath Pawar in splitting the NCP in July 2023.
32:11It was his urge to come out of his uncle's shadow.
32:14The split itself came after a first-
32:16bid at Ku failed in 2019.
32:21The split itself came after a second.
32:25The split itself came after a second.
32:26It was the first quarter quarter.
32:28The split itself came after a second.
32:31The split itself came after a second.
32:31Thank you so much for joining us.
32:36and they came to the Pakshajimani.
32:41Ajit Pawar entered politics in 1982 when he was elected on the board.
32:46His first electoral foray was in 1991.
32:51He was elected to the Lok Sabha from Baramati.
32:54But he vacated the Senate.
32:56He took the seat after Sherat Pawar became the defense minister in the Narsimha Rao government.
33:01He was elected as MLA from Baramati the same year and since then...
33:06...has been representing the seat, winning elections eight times.
33:12Responsibility was shared.
33:14Sherat Pawar in Delhi and Ajit Pawar in Delhi...
33:16...Maharashtra nursing the family bastion of Baramati in his uncle's apartment.
33:21He woke up early.
33:26He met his supporters and was accessible to people.
33:29That was how it worked.
33:31Till Ajit Pawar joined hands with the BJP.
33:36The gamble seemed to have backfired in 2024.
33:41Lok Sabha elections when Sherat Pawar's NCP-SP won big.
33:46Ajit Pawar's party to just one MP.
33:49But within months...
33:51Ajit Pawar made a comeback with the NDA winning a super landslide in the assembly post.
33:56Within the NDA, flanked by two Hindutva leaders Ajit Pawar...
34:01...he was the odd one out.
34:02He was staunchly secular.
34:04Objected to communal politics...
34:06...and fielded Muslim candidates.

35:25With the demise of Ajit Pawar, the ANCP has lost a mass leader who was...
35:30also a proven administrator.
35:35It does sound cliché, yet true, that Ajit Pawar's death has left a void.
35:40That the ANCP cannot will.
35:45This report, India Today.
35:50So, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar's death in that tragic...
35:55The air crash leaves a huge void in Maharashtra's politics.
35:58How will that void be filled?
36:00How should one look at the legacy of Ajit Pawar and importantly what happens?
36:05To the NCP and the Pawar family legacy next.
36:09Joining me...
36:10Me now are Daniel Francis, Maharashtra-based political analyst, works also closely...
36:15with Eknath Shinde.
36:16Sudhir Suryavanshi is a senior journalist based...
36:20in Mumbai, Clyde Crasto, national spokesperson and secretary NCP.
36:25Sharad Pawar.
36:26I appreciate all of you joining us on the show.
36:30We come first to you, Clyde Crasto, because the big question how...
36:35A. How do you first assess Ajit Pawar's legacy?
36:39How will you...
36:40How will you best remember Ajit Pawar given the fact that just a few years ago he...
36:45rebelled against Sharad Pawar and broke the NCP?
36:50You see, Raj, the Ajit Dada that I fondly know of is a man...
36:55who was connected to the grassroots.
36:58He was a people's man.
36:59I mean...
37:00For me...
37:01I mean, actually, lots of words because I've worked with him for more than 20 years.
37:05And I remember him as a man who was always on time.
37:10He was an impeccable presence of mind.
37:12I mean, he was always there to help people.
37:14I'll just...
37:15You know, there are...
37:15There are so many anecdotes about him.
37:17I'll give you a simple anecdote as I remember, you know...
37:20A few years ago, we were at Agas Kranti Maidan for Agas Kranti Divas and it was raining...
37:25You know how it rains so heavily in Mumbai sometime in July, August.
37:30And we were, you know, taking shade under the Pandal somewhere and...
37:35At a distance, I saw a figure standing holding an umbrella and then we...
37:40tried to look closer.
37:41It was Ajit Dada who came perfectly on time because he knew this was the time...
37:45for that program to start.
37:46But people had started because it was raining so heavily.
37:49And, you know, the...
37:50Agas Kranti Maidan can get flooded.
37:52But he was there and he was there on time and when we went there...
37:55He said, you know, I'm here because you all are here, we have to be there on time.
37:59Whether it's seven...
38:00One o'clock when he's holding a Janata Darbar, meeting people, helping people...
38:05The legacy of the man is someone whom I will always remember as someone who was there for...
38:10Everyone, you could approach him, you know, you could meet him at any time.
38:14I mean, you know, there is a lot...
38:15You know, you say that you go through a personal assistant or PA or whatever, but if you call...
38:20it out Dada, then he would always answer you.
38:23So, you know, I mean...
38:25I don't know.
38:26I actually...
38:27You know, when...
38:28I...
38:29I...
38:30I take your point because I remember...
38:35doing an interview with him in Baramati two years ago, less than two years ago at 6am in the...
38:40morning.
38:41I was blurry eyed, but he was fresh and he had met dozens of people.
38:45He kept a very punishing schedule, was extremely hard working.
38:48Sudhir Suryavanshi...
38:50You know, Ajit Dada's legacy also is seen to divide people depending on...
38:55how you look at him.
38:56There were those who sort of targeted him, accused him of corruption...
39:00scams and there were those who reminded people that he was a very able administrator...
39:05at several posts and was extremely hard working and as Clyde said...
39:10he kept it to the ground.
39:11How do you see Ajit Pawar's legacy?
39:13Does he leave a huge void?
39:15In Maharashtra's politics, particularly that of the NCP, a party which...
39:20has now revolved in a way around the persona of Ajit Pawar with Sharad Pawar.
39:25Ajit Pawar is now 85.
39:26Ajit Pawar, you know, Rajdeep.
39:27Ajit Pawar is now 85.
39:28Ajit Pawar is now 85.
39:29Ajit Pawar, Rajdeep.
39:30Ajit Navj cost.

39:35Ajit Tawar and you went with the blurry eyes I also remember I just want to
39:40share this anecdote I also remember when I first met him and he has given me
39:45the time of 7 o'clock for the interview and I used to stay in a new Bambi that was far away from the
39:50east place so I was late for 10 minutes and then in between
39:5510 minutes I got more than 50 calls from his PA the people who works with
40:00the other is waiting for you the other is waiting where are you where are you and I
40:03lost that you know 10-15 minutes
40:05then after that there was another schedule of meeting and the series of meeting went still
40:1011 o'clock I waited for him still 11 o'clock then I met him he said Mr. Suryanshi
40:15I waited for you and you are not there on the time so sorry then we fix the next meeting
40:20then since that time I decided to meet him either afternoon or in the evening
40:25because to meeting him early morning was tough for us and it was easy for
40:30him that is the first thing second thing is you know his demise lose
40:35a lot of vacuum a lot of over a not only in his
40:40party family but in Maharashtra politics also if you see the number
40:45other way you know Maharashtra government is stable they don't have any threat you know because
40:50they have more than simple majority in this in a state assembly that is
40:55almost 230 MLS with them against the magic figure of 145
41:00into 88 number of state assembly that is the first thing second thing I think it will
41:05include a big vacuum in NCP both NCP because as a
41:10member both NCP is trying to merge and come together the consensus was made with
41:15in the power family also the baton has to be forwarded to Ajit power and he is
41:20the man who can lead the party and the family and suddenly this incident happened
41:25and I think now the family has to go back again and they have to find out the way
41:30place now what will happen with Ajit power NCP whether people will always remember
41:35or always remain with him who will be their next leader there are many questions now
41:40you are making a very important point
41:45you are actually claiming that the power family had was almost convinced that
41:50there was a need for a merger the merger was imminent and Ajit power would
41:55lead the would lead the NCP am I correct you are saying that an NCP
42:00merger was imminent yeah absolutely NCP merger was imminent
42:05and everybody understood the importance therefore the as a litmus test
42:10as a initial say they you know tied up in the Pune and Pemprinichi
42:15warbush election again they were tying up in the Jilla Parishad election and he was
42:20on his route for campaigning for his candidate in the Baramati and after that he was retired
42:25turning back to the you know Mumbai so merger was on the card and there were many
42:30many people within the NCP in the Sharat power group they were happy
42:35some of them were not happy because they didn't wanted to see it
42:40another leadership but now the sudden demise of Ajit power untimely
42:45demise of Ajit power will make big question mark who will be their lead
42:50leader because Sharat power he is you know almost 85 and very difficult for him to
42:55do you know all this work which Ajit power used to do so it is big question
43:00the power family within the two faction of NCP who will be their leader now that is a big question
43:05okay you know that I will come to
43:10that with Clyde in a moment but Daniel Francis you know it's quite remarkable he was
43:15deputy chief minister six times and under different chief ministers under congress chief minister
43:20like Prithviraj Savan under a BJP chief minister like Devendra Fadnavis again under a
43:25chief minister it almost seemed much like Nitish Kumar is a permanent
43:30chief minister in Bihar Ajit power had become the permanent deputy chief minister
43:35in Maharashtra he almost was invaluable in that sense to whoever was in power they need
43:40needed almost Ajit power around in many ways
43:45Ajit was deserving but never promoted in 2004 if you go back you know the
43:50NCP had you know good numbers to claim the chief minister's post
43:55but they almost gave it away for the Congress party and that they have more seats than the Congress
44:00Congress they had one more seat than the Congress Congress and they couldn't negotiate
44:05it for Ajit power I think that was also a complaint that he had from his part
44:10party bosses but you know he was an essential part
44:15of governance for the last 20 years and mostly part of every government
44:20government except for now is 2014 to 2019 and
44:25he was a very pragmatic leader I think he understood what happened after 2014
44:30and what was important for the party and for the region that
44:35they represented that they need to move closer to the BJP I think that thought
44:40process was not appreciated by his party supremo and he did
44:45move closer to the BJP creating a crisis in 2019
44:50and thereafter we know the story but he was a very pragmatic guy and
44:55you know he had a very very good relationship with
45:00party workers he party leaders yeah
45:05and he moved closer to the BJP but he did not
45:10subscribe
45:15subscribe to the Hindutva ideology in fact more recently when a few BJP leaders made
45:20party remarks against minorities he spoke out against them
45:23I don't know for example
45:25in the winter session of the Maharashtra assembly
45:28all the political leaders
45:30would once visit the RSS headquarters he never participated in something like that
45:35he maintained his identity and he maintained you know it's a very difficult thing to do it
45:40in today's NDA but he did that and managed to do that very well
45:44so he was very
45:45unique he was you know a man of his own making he never compromised
45:50on many things that you know he was he was a cooperative guy
45:55he was either way a congressman you know cut from the same cloth
46:00and he maintained that identity till the last day of his life
46:03so that was a very interesting part
46:05and they see one thing that he was abused four five days before
46:10he joined the NDA by the prime minister himself you know
46:13there's a political name
46:15calling but he was almost vindicated by the BJP itself that he was brought back
46:20in the government and made the number two number three position in the same
46:25NDA so you know he had a very interesting journey you cannot like him you can hate him
46:30but Maharashtra polities could not ignore him
46:35that's right because all the charges that were made by the BJP against him in the
46:40so-called irrigation scam 70,000 crore as it was called
46:44eventually
46:45Ajit Pawar was part of that BJP government many believe he was a little impatient at time
46:50which could border on the reckless quite unlike his uncle
46:55and Sharat Pawar was much more cautious
46:57impatient
46:58impatient
46:59impatient
47:00he said Clyde Crasto yeah Clyde Crasto taking our
47:05from what Sudhir Suryavanshi said do the power what happens now to the NDA
47:10NCP
47:11does the NCP
47:12does the NCP have to make a choice now between going
47:15going with the India Alliance or going with the NDA will the Pawar family now be able to come
47:20together without Ajit Pawar there to sort of guide it on the ground in Maharashtra
47:25in particular Sharat Pawar has spent a large part of his politics in the last 20 years
47:30in Delhi Supriya Sule in Delhi
47:32so who guides the NCP and will we see a
47:35united NCP now
47:38see Rajti this is a time of grief
47:40you know to talk about something like this I think it's not the right time to even discuss
47:45something of this matter but for the for what I'm trying to tell you is that at the end of the day
47:50you know it's it's a tragic thing that has happened to all of us you know
47:55I could you know vaguely decipher what Sudhir Bhai was saying
47:58the thing is you know
48:00he he did what he felt was right you know for himself okay
48:05and it the Kada they decided they wanted to be with Dada some people wanted to be with
48:10I have each one has their provocative and I I'll tell you one thing you know you cannot
48:15rule
48:15you know
48:17you know
48:18you know
48:19you know
48:20you know
48:21everybody has their own standing
48:22you know
48:23everybody has their own standing
48:24you know
48:25everybody has their own standing
48:26everybody has their own standing
48:27we continue doing our work
48:29but to speak about it at this moment
48:32of time where we are all in grief
48:34and let me tell you something
48:35the question could be like
48:37I am a spokesperson of the NCP
48:39but I am talking about Ajit Pahar
48:41let me tell you
48:42Ajit Pahar as an individual
48:45and Ajit Pahar as a political
48:47politician are two different people
48:48all together
48:48and the man has a big heart
48:50I mean
48:52I am controlling my emotions today
48:53I have known
48:54you know
48:55in fact
48:56but
48:57the man had a big heart
48:58you know
48:58and so
48:59today at this time
49:00I don't want to
49:02think of him as a politician
49:03I want to think of him
49:04as a man who was connected
49:05to the grassroots
49:05I want to think of him as
49:07a man who helped people
49:08a man who touched many lives
49:10okay
49:11he did what
49:12he had to do
49:12I mean
49:13it's fair enough
49:14but
49:15this is a man
49:16who we have
49:17lost today
49:17a man who worked
49:19for the people
49:19six o'clock in the morning
49:22if somebody said
49:22dada mala madad kara
49:23and he would never say
49:25he would never tell the P.A.
49:27he would call the P.A. and said
49:28hey vaga
49:29and hey
49:29this has to be done
49:32so let's remember
49:33the man today
49:33as someone who touched
49:34a lot of hearts
49:35let's not think
49:37about what he did
49:38or what he shouldn't
49:39have done
49:39a man with a golden heart
49:41and we've lost
49:41you
49:42a man with a golden heart
49:42and someone
49:47therefore
49:47who won elections
49:48for over 30 years
49:49and you don't win
49:50election after election
49:51after
49:5230 years
49:52for 30 years
49:53barring that one election
49:54where his wife
49:55of course
49:55contested against
49:56Supriya Soleil
49:57something that he was
49:58discomforted by
49:59I can tell you
50:00from my
50:01conversations with him
50:03but the truth of the matter
50:04is he was
50:05as was just said
50:06a doer
50:06and he kept his word
50:08and I will always recall
50:10a conversation
50:11I had with
50:11him in 2024
50:12where he also revealed
50:13his great love
50:14for cricket
50:15and he smiled
50:16because Ajit Pawar
50:18was known
50:18as someone
50:19who didn't like
50:19journalists too much
50:20and didn't smile
50:21too often
50:21but somehow
50:22that day
50:23in Baramati
50:24he smiled a lot
50:25he seemed very relaxed
50:26and my thoughts
50:28are with him
50:29and his family
50:30when Maharashtra
50:31has lost
50:31its deputy chief minister
50:33long-serving
50:33deputy chief minister
50:35Ajit Pawar
50:36in a tragic
50:36air crash
50:37now Ajit Pawar
50:39is someone
50:39who generally
50:40stayed away
50:40from the media
50:41especially the national media
50:43allowing the likes
50:44of Supriya Suley
50:45and Sharad Pawar
50:46really to represent
50:48the NCP
50:49in such
50:49national media
50:50fora
50:51but in September 2024
50:53for the first time
50:54Ajit Pawar
50:55agreed to our
50:56request
50:56to attend
50:57the India Today
50:58pre-Maharashtra
50:59election
51:00conclave
51:00in Mumbai
51:01and in my conversation
51:03with him
51:04we saw a very
51:05different side
51:06to Ajit
51:06Pawar
51:07even smiling
51:08at times
51:09and candidly
51:10admitting
51:10that he
51:11hoped
51:11to be
51:12chief minister
51:12of Maharashtra
51:14one day
