00:15Her government is now entering talks with the US and Denmark over the future
00:19of her country
00:20President Donald Trump is still seeking an unprecedented...
00:24foothold in the Arctic island
00:26despite climbing down on his previous threats...
00:29to forcibly seize or acquire the territory
00:33Minister, thank you so much...
00:34for joining us.
00:35It's a pleasure to have you.
00:36Thank you for having me.
00:37Can I first ask you to reflect on the dramatic recent...
00:42few days when the future of Greenland was really in the balance...
00:46after all of this can Greenlanders still consider...
00:51Trump's America to be their ally and friend?
00:54If I reflect back on...
00:56for the last 14 days and so...
00:58I think it was...
00:59we saw an increased...
01:01regarding Greenland in terms of the American interest...
01:04but mind you, the US have had an interest...
01:06I've seen Greenland for the past many years actually...
01:09more than hundreds of years...
01:10so we are quite...
01:11used to this interest from the US...
01:13and we do realize that we are part of that...
01:15now...
01:16in the National Security Interest Sphere...
01:18so that part is not new to us...
01:20of course...
01:21there has been an increased rhetoric...
01:22about buying or...
01:23or acquiring Greenland...
01:24or even taking us...
01:25by...
01:26by a force...
01:27we are not a territory...
01:28we are a country...
01:29equal...
01:30equal...
01:31within the Kingdom of Denmark...
01:33and...
01:34we...
01:35are a people in our own...
01:36right...
01:37acknowledged by law...
01:38and therefore...
01:39of course...
01:40it would be a...
01:41great...
01:41violation of international law...
01:43if...
01:44if anything was to happen...
01:45without our consent...
01:46Trump has...
01:47obviously...
01:48climbed down...
01:49on his...
01:50most...
01:51three...
01:51threatening...
01:52rhetoric...
01:53but you are now...
01:54entering talks...
01:55with his administration...
01:56as well as...
01:57with Denmark...
01:58on a future...
01:59kind of...
02:00deal...
02:01Trump says that...
02:01a framework deal...
02:02does exist...
02:03are you aware...
02:04of that framework...
02:05and what does it entail?
02:06there is no...
02:08deal yet...
02:09what we have...
02:10is an agreement...
02:11to venture into...
02:12a dialogue...
02:13between...
02:14it's gonna be...
02:15I think...
02:16maybe a number of...
02:16different dialogues...
02:17I think there will be...
02:18a NATO-led...
02:19dialogue...
02:20that has to do with...
02:21maybe...
02:22an increased presence...
02:23from NATO...
02:24in the high north...
02:25that could be...
02:26greenland...
02:26we would welcome that...
02:28then there would be...
02:29these trilateral...
02:31dialogues...
02:32between...
02:33the US...
02:34on one side...
02:35and the Kingdom of Denmark...
02:36consistent in this part...
02:36of Greenland in Denmark...
02:37on the other side...
02:38and we still have...
02:39to gain clarity...
02:40about what...
02:41is...
02:42what is the...
02:43American...
02:44interests...
02:45concretely...
02:46because we really...
02:46haven't...
02:47heard anything...
02:48yet...
02:49and then there might...
02:50be something...
02:51regarding...
02:51a more...
02:52a closer...
02:53business tie...
02:54and that would be...
02:55a whole...
02:56other dialogue...
02:57as well...
02:58You mentioned...
02:59that you are...
03:00a country...
03:01you are...
03:02a people...
03:03and your Prime Minister...
03:04has...
03:05said that...
03:06Greenland's...
03:06sovereignty...
03:07and...
03:08integrity...
03:09of its borders...
03:10cannot be...
03:11violated...
03:12it's non-negotiable...
03:11yet...
03:12Trump...
03:13is saying...
03:14in public...
03:15that he wants...
03:16full access...
03:17to...
03:16your country...
03:17do you think...
03:18that...
03:19a compromise...
03:20is possible...
03:21here?
03:21I think...
03:22if you look at...
03:23the 1951...
03:24agreement...
03:25already in place...
03:26the US has...
03:27wide access...
03:28to Greenland...
03:29and we have...
03:30no problems...
03:31with this...
03:31also...
03:32do not have...
03:33any problems...
03:34with some...
03:35sort of...
03:36update...
03:37of that...
03:38agreement...
03:39that would entail...
03:40and how...
03:41that would be...
03:42possible...
03:43with our Red Lions...
03:44which is...
03:44mentioned...
03:45that we want...
03:46the territory...
03:47to be...
03:48the realm...
03:49to be...
03:49intact...
03:50and our...
03:51sovereignty...
03:52to be intact...
03:53You are...
03:54however...
03:55Minister...
03:56for...
03:57Greenland...
03:58is a hotbed...
03:59of...
04:00critical...
04:01raw materials...
04:02and...
04:02would...
04:03that...
04:04be...
04:05up...
04:06for negotiations...
04:07that have increased...
04:08American access to...
04:07those resources...
04:08more mining...
04:09contracts...
04:10as part...
04:10of the commercial deal...
04:11that you've referenced...
04:12I do not want...
04:13to combine...
04:14any form...
04:15of defense...
04:16agreement...
04:17with...
04:18...
04:17access to our...
04:18minerals...
04:19we need to keep...
04:20these things...
04:21in their separate...
04:22baskets...
04:23if you...
04:22well...
04:23and...
04:24we are...
04:25very...
04:27much...
04:28open to...
04:29investments...
04:30and collaborations...
04:31with the...
04:32you.
04:33you...
04:34you...
04:35you...
04:36you...
04:37start to um to put it all together in the same basket because it's
04:42different things we cannot give another country full access to our minerals
04:47uh this is a rule-based country so so we of course you need to
04:52follow the local rules and regulations in order to gain access but we have
04:57definitely
04:57every interest in deepening our relationship and figuring out this how can we
05:02to our mutual benefit develop our mineral sector and several different
05:07investors countries are interested of course in
05:11in developing greenlands
05:12mineral sector including uh some companies with chinese links um
05:17do you understand that trump has some uh concerns around that and would
05:22you be willing to limit um the extent to which the west
05:39you
05:27adversaries such as china can invest in your mineral sector
05:40currently
05:32as i'm aware we have two chinese companies invested in a mineral sector
05:37both
05:37these licenses are inactive and both are being fought in court actually
05:42against
05:42the government of real and so i don't see a lot of chinese interest into a
05:47mineral sector
05:47we don't see a lot of
05:52I think we have shown quite clearly
05:57dans les années où nous étions en termes d'allier-ships et d'partners-ships.
06:02Et nous avons...
06:02Nous avons vraiment choisié l'université de l'Union Européenne et de l'Union Européenne.
06:07Les États-Unis, Canada, UK.
06:11Et je pense que...
06:12We have both in regulation and in policy shown where we stand.
06:17Minister, the past few days have been quite...
06:22...fightening for some Greenlanders, especially when Trump initially was using rhetoric.
06:27Such as the possibility of using force to seize the territory.
06:32You mentioned that there could potentially be dialogue around increased NATO presence.
06:37But do you think today that Europe and West...
06:42...and allies other than the US would be ready and able to defend?
06:47I think there's more than one answer to that question.
06:52Really, I think that NATO has proven itself to be a good alliance.
06:57In other countries, the Member States do not always agree on everything.
07:00But it has, I think, shown...
07:02...and given prosperity and peace to a wider part of the world than just the NATO members.
07:07States.
07:08So I think it's a good alliance too.
07:09I believe that everything will be unchanged.
07:12...and that there is a huge change in the future.
07:13If you look at the world historically, now things have changed throughout the...
07:17et les Alliés ont changé, et bien sûr, c'est ce qui s'est aussi passé.
