00:30This program is brought to you by Toyota.
00:39Today's episode, the statue steal or Togo to go.
00:46Come choose, Carmen Sandiego's pack of pusillanimous punks has prowled again.
00:51This time, they clinched their criminal claws around a statue in the African nation of Togo.
00:56A monument to a plane wreck might seem strange, but it's one of the main attractions in the town of Sarakawa, Togo.
01:05It marks the spot where a plane carrying President Eyadema crashed under very suspicious circumstances in 1974.
01:12The President survived the crash and erected an imposing statue of himself at the site.
01:19It shows him pointing to the ground and saying,
01:21They almost killed me here.
01:24It stood in defiance of the President's enemies until today.
01:27When Wonder Rat, Carmen's whiskered and witless wannabe, took his pawdry tights to Togo, detached the statue and scampered away.
01:38He left an inflatable Wonder Rat doll in its place.
01:41Your mission gumshoes, snap the trap shot on Wonder Rat, return Eyadema's statue to Togo and then capture Carmen Sandiego.
01:50They've ripped off the goods, now chase down those hoods.
01:53Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?
01:56And one of these people could find her!
02:03John Scott!
02:08Urien Tang!
02:13Nick Perez!
02:15And this man is special agent in charge of training new recruits, Greg Lee!
02:28Oh!
02:30Oh yeah!
02:31Why, thank you!
02:33What a crowd!
02:34Very nice, thanks guys!
02:36How are you guys? You heard about the case?
02:37I guess we're gonna start you off with 50 Acme Crime Bucks.
02:39Any time you answer a question correctly, we'll give you 10 more Crime Bucks.
02:42And the two of you with the highest score at the end of this round will then proceed to the next round.
02:45And as always, all of our facts have been verified by National Geographic World, okay?
02:50Chief, let's go!
02:52Greg, Wonder Rat has stolen Eyadema's statue and there's no time to lose.
02:55Now here's the rap sheet on Wonder Rat.
02:58He's Wonder Rat!
02:59Fabulous Wonder Rat!
03:01The mighty Wonder Rat!
03:03He's so desperate to promote himself, he'd pose for the photo on a box of rat poison.
03:08Now, gee, what should I have?
03:11Should I have the crocodile, the zebra, giraffe, or the warthog?
03:16I just can't decide.
03:18Acme Watch for Falling President's Net has tracked Wonder Rat to a Kenyan city that's home to the famous carnivore restaurant.
03:27And those exotic meats really are on the menu.
03:30The town was founded in the 1890s by the British as a headquarters for the construction of the Mombasa to Uganda Railroad.
03:36Now, the railroad was nicknamed the Lunatic Line partly because of its high cost.
03:43It also had a little problem with workers becoming dinner for the wildlife.
03:48In one case, the superintendent of police was dragged from inside a rail car by a hungry lion.
03:54What?
03:55In fact, that very same car can still be seen there today.
04:00Now, there's a very basic lesson here, gumshoes.
04:03It's better to eat than be eaten.
04:06Now, let's see.
04:08What shall I have?
04:10A crocodile, maybe?
04:11A crocodile, maybe.
04:14Okay.
04:15Thanks, Chief.
04:16All right, guys. Name the city, if you will, please.
04:18Is it Nairobi, Kampala, or Dar es Salaam?
04:21Remember the clues that we heard?
04:22City in Kenya, the carnivore restaurant, and former British headquarters for the Mombasa to Uganda Railroad.
04:28John's ready, so is Yuyan.
04:30And Nick is still making up his mind this time, but now he's ready.
04:32John, we'll start with you. What do you say?
04:33Okay, I chose Nairobi.
04:34Nairobi.
04:35What do you think, Yuyan?
04:36I chose Nairobi.
04:37Nairobi. Nick?
04:38I chose Kampala.
04:39Kampala.
04:40Kampala. The answer we're looking for is Nairobi.
04:41Nice job, John and Yuyan.
04:44Okay, so that is John. You have 60, Yuyan 60, Nick, 50, Crying Bucks.
04:47John, tell me about the talent show you were just in.
04:50Well, it was a while ago, and I did stand-up comedy for it.
04:55I guess that was pretty funny. I have to let the audience decide for that.
05:00That was just about it. Nick Perez was in it with me.
05:03Very good. We'll talk about that in just a little bit.
05:04Yuyan, you have a collection you were telling me about.
05:07Yeah, it's a coin collection. It's dented coins. It's really weird, but, you know, it's unique, I guess.
05:12It's what? Bent?
05:13It's bent.
05:14Bent coins.
05:15Sorta.
05:16Great. Okay. Well, Nick, tell me about the talent show.
05:18Well, me and a few friends were in a, we dressed up as the singing group Wilson Phillips,
05:24and we kind of basically made fools of ourselves, but it was a good time.
05:31Well, that's kind of what we do here as well, so I hope you enjoy yourself.
05:34Please welcome them all to the show, if you would, please, let him tell us.
05:39All right, you guys, we're off to a good start. Let's continue to try to find Wonder Rat.
05:43For our next clue, we turn to our loyal and trusted informant from Acme Roughnet,
05:47and as always, our Acme canine language interpreter. How are you?
05:50Good. Peachy.
05:51Thanks for having me with us.
05:52Okay, Fado, what do you say?
05:53Wonder Rats in a Malaysian city whose name means muddy confluence.
06:00What's confluence?
06:01He said it's a place where two rivers unite. Duh.
06:05He also says main gassing is a major sport there.
06:07That's the Malay name for spinning tops.
06:10It's more than just a game for kids. Adult teams compete using tops that weigh as much as 15 pounds,
06:15and the record spinning time is almost two hours.
06:18You said all that in one wolf?
06:20That's what he said.
06:21He says it's all in the pronunciation.
06:23Oh, my goodness.
06:24Well, listen, thank you so much for dropping by. Thanks, Fado.
06:26Thank you very much.
06:28Okay.
06:29Hey.
06:30Go get it, boy.
06:33All right, guys.
06:34Name the city, if you will, please.
06:36Is it Phnom Penh, Singapore, or Kuala Lumpur?
06:39Remember the clues that we heard?
06:41City of Malaysia, its name means muddy confluence and top spinning is a major sport.
06:46Everybody's ready? John, we'll start with you. What do you say?
06:48I chose Kuala Lumpur.
06:49Kuala Lumpur.
06:50You, Yen?
06:51I chose Phnom Penh.
06:52Phnom Penh.
06:53Nick?
06:54I choose Kuala Lumpur.
06:55Kuala Lumpur.
06:56The answer we're looking for is Kuala Lumpur.
06:57Nice job, fellas.
07:00Okay, so let me, John, have 70.
07:02You, Yen, 60.
07:03And Nick, 60 crime bucks.
07:04Now, Acme Crime Net now reports that Wonder Rag is in Hawaii.
07:07Okay, you guys know what that means?
07:09It's time for the...
07:10Oh, my.
07:11You ready?
07:12Okay, boy.
07:13Ready?
07:14Go.
07:15Hey, hey, hey.
07:16He's in Hawaii, so that means that all of these questions for the lightning round will be about Hawaii.
07:23Okay, so each one's worth five crime bucks.
07:24Hands on your buzzers.
07:25Just listen to me.
07:26Here we go.
07:27About how many hotel rooms are there in Waikiki Beach?
07:30Is it 2,760, 9,640, or 38,000?
07:36Nick?
07:3738,000.
07:3838,000's right.
07:39Nice job.
07:40Good for you.
07:42That's a lot of ice buckets.
07:43Okay, question two.
07:44One of Oahu's most famous attractions is Diamond Head.
07:49Is Diamond Head the name of the hula rap singer, a volcano, or a diamond mine?
07:55John?
07:56A volcano?
07:57Very good, yes.
08:01Question three.
08:02In what year did Hawaii become a state?
08:04Was it 1959, 1963, or 1971?
08:07Yuyen?
08:081971.
08:09Sorry, not 1979.
08:10Oh, Nick?
08:111963.
08:12No, it wasn't 1963.
08:14John, was it 1959, 1963, or 1971?
08:18John?
08:191953.
08:20No, I'm sorry.
08:21It was 1959.
08:23Sorry, guys, about that one.
08:25That one hurt.
08:26Okay, so that means at the end of that round, Johnny has 75, Yuyen has 60, and Nick 65 crime bucks.
08:31Okay, nice job, guys.
08:32For our next clue, we now turn to...
08:34Greg, get in here.
08:35Right away.
08:36This man will be right there.
08:37You guys stay here.
08:38We'll check with her.
08:42Oh, this is a fine time to redecorate your office.
08:44What?
08:45I'm not redecorating my office.
08:47These men came in and broke a hole in my wall.
08:50Look!
08:51Hey!
08:52We're digging a sewer line.
08:53Hey!
08:54I mean, either we put it through here, or we gotta do a 2,000 mile detour.
08:57And according to my blueprints, Max, the blueprints...
09:01Hey, buddy.
09:02Hey, buddy.
09:03Hey, buddy.
09:04Hey, buddy.
09:05There's not supposed to be anything here.
09:07That's because this is the secret headquarters of Acme Crime Net.
09:11Oh!
09:12Oh!
09:13Heck!
09:14We are never going to capture Carmen Sandiego with all of these distractions.
09:18Hey!
09:19Acme Crime Net!
09:20You're those guys trying to capture that, uh, Carmen character?
09:22Hey, I remember when she tried to steal that Washington, uh, monument thing.
09:26Took us a week to glue that thing back into place.
09:28That's it.
09:29But, heck, for you guys, a little 2,000 mile diversion?
09:31Man, no problem.
09:32Oh, well, what about the hole?
09:35Oh, yeah.
09:36I'll tell you what.
09:37We'll repair the wall, and just so there's no hard feelings, we'll send the gumshoe who captures
09:42Carmen to anywhere in North America for free.
09:45Deal?
09:46Uh, uh, that's fine, sir.
09:48I think you guys are great, you know?
09:50You know what else I like?
09:51I like every day when you come into the office here, and then you tell him to go away.
09:55Go away.
09:56Oh, well, he, uh, he really likes that part.
10:02You, too.
10:03Yes, ma'am.
10:09Wasn't Scott just the dog guy, and now he's...
10:11Ah, never mind.
10:12Okay, guys.
10:13Uh, remember, we're still looking for the statue and Wonder Rat.
10:16Fortunately for us, though, Acme Bugnet has just intercepted this phone conversation
10:19between Wonder Rat and Carmen Sandiego.
10:21Watch.
10:22Acme's about to trap you.
10:24Head for a city whose population went from zero to 10,000 in one day.
10:28Holy cheese!
10:29Why the big hurry?
10:31Because the U.S. government was giving the land away.
10:34It's in a state that was called Indian Territory until it was open for settlement.
10:38At noon on April 22nd, 1889, gunshots were fired.
10:42That was the signal for thousands of people to charge in and stake their claims.
10:45So the government took Indian Territory and gave it away to other people?
10:50That's stealing!
10:51You oughta know, Cheesemeister.
10:53Now move.
10:54Okay, guys.
10:55Name the city, if you will, please.
10:56Is it Oklahoma City, Dallas, or Santa Fe?
10:59Remember the clues that we heard?
11:00A large city whose population went from zero to 10,000 in one day.
11:04And in the state that was called Indian Territory.
11:06Looks like everybody's ready.
11:07John, we'll start with you.
11:08What do you say?
11:09I chose Santa Fe.
11:10Santa Fe.
11:11You, Yen?
11:12I chose Santa Fe.
11:13Santa Fe. Nick?
11:14I chose Santa Fe.
11:15Everybody said Santa Fe.
11:16Everybody's wrong.
11:17We were looking for Oklahoma City.
11:18Sorry about that, guys.
11:19Uh, yeah, yeah.
11:20Okay, so that means, John, you're gonna stay at 75.
11:21You, Yen, has 60.
11:22And Nick, 65.
11:23Wait a minute.
11:24What's with the lights here?
11:25What's happening?
11:26Oh, no.
11:27It's her.
11:28The mysterious woman.
11:32Gregory.
11:33It's a troubled nation.
11:35I know not of what you speak, woman.
11:38Don't play dumb with me, Mr. Lee.
11:42Oh!
11:43I speak of the place where Wonder Rat hides.
11:46It's the nation's capital.
11:48It's recent history filled with unrest.
11:51Ah, Sunburn.
11:52Please, thank you.
11:53The oppressive regimes of the Duvaliers.
11:55A military coup.
11:56The election of Jean Bertrand Aristide.
11:59Another military coup.
12:02When sorrows come, they come not single spies, but in battalions.
12:07Ooh, Shakespeare.
12:08I like that.
12:09Listen, uh, I know you've given me a lot of information.
12:11I feel sort of bad that I have given you nothing.
12:13And yet, when that saxophone plays, I have an incredible urge to...
12:16Yes.
12:18...give you something.
12:21No, thank you.
12:22It's cherry.
12:23Thanks anyway, Mr. Lee.
12:25But remember...
12:26I'll be back.
12:29Good dramatics for you here today.
12:30We hope you enjoyed it.
12:31Uh, ladies and gentlemen, please name the city, if you will, please.
12:34Is it Santo Domingo, Kingston, or Port-au-Prince?
12:36Remember the clues that we heard?
12:37Capital City and the Duvaliers.
12:38Come up with an answer as quickly as you can, please.
12:39Come up with an answer as quickly as you can, please.
12:40John is ready.
12:41So is Nick, and Yu Yen is now ready.
12:42John, we'll start with you.
12:43What do you think?
12:44I chose Port-au-Prince.
12:45Port-au-Prince.
12:46What do you think, Yu Yen?
12:47I chose Port-au-Prince.
12:48Port-au-Prince.
12:49What do you think, Yu Yen?
12:50I chose Port-au-Prince.
12:51Port-au-Prince.
12:52Nick?
12:53I chose Port-au-Prince.
12:54Port-au-Prince.
12:55The answer we're looking for is Port-au-Prince.
12:56That's the way to do it, John.
12:57I chose Port-au-Prince.
12:58I chose Port-au-Prince.
12:59Port-au-Prince.
13:00What do you think, Yu Yen?
13:01I chose Port-au-Prince.
13:02Port-au-Prince.
13:03What do you think, Yu Yen?
13:04I chose Port-au-Prince.
13:05Port-au-Prince.
13:06Port-au-Prince.
13:07The answer we're looking for is Port-au-Prince.
13:08That's the way to do it.
13:10Okay, so John, you have 85.
13:14Yu Yen, 70.
13:15And Nick, 75.
13:16Now, we've just received word that Wonder Rat has just left Port-au-Prince.
13:18So, let's pick up the chase.
13:23Each one of these is worth five crime bugs.
13:25Hands on your ledgers, please.
13:26please watch the monitor and listen closely. Here we go. Wonder Rat's idea of a good time
13:30is visiting the site of the former penal colony on Devil's Island. Name the country.
13:39John, you're in time. Go ahead. French Guiana. French Guiana's right. He ran all the way
13:43from French Guiana to Guyana without looking back. What country did he pass through? Nick.
13:50Cernum. Cernum's right. He took his maracas to Caracas. What country is he in? Nick.
13:55Venezuela. Venezuela's right. When they caught up with him, they kicked that runty rodent across
13:59the western border. What country is he in now? Nick. Bolivia. Sorry, it's Colombia. Wonder Rat
14:04finally called it quits in the capital of Ecuador. Name it. Yuyen. Quinto. Quito is right. Nice job.
14:11That means at the end of the chase round, John has 90, Yuyen has 75, and Nick 85. That's the way
14:16to do it, guys. Okay, now it is time for the final clue of this round, which means you have to decide
14:24how much you want to risk. If you're right, we'll add that amount to your score. If you're
14:27not right, we'll subtract it from your score. You can risk 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, or 50 Acme
14:33Crime Bucks. Take a look right over here, if you will, please. Here's a portion of the world
14:36where we think Wonder Rat is headed. Now, if you know a lot about this part of the world,
14:39you may want to risk a lot. If you don't know very much about it, though, you may not want
14:43to risk quite so much. So, take a look at the map and think about it.
15:00Okay, everybody's ready for our next clue. We turn to Kim Alexis, special agent for Acme
15:04SupermodelNet. Kim, what's the latest? Okay, gumshoes. Get on the overseas highway south of Miami
15:10and keep going till it ends. You'll be in a place that was once Florida's largest city,
15:16but that was about a century ago. These days, it's a lot more peaceful, and it seems to attract
15:21writers. Eight residents have won Pulitzer Prizes, including Ernest Hemingway and Tennessee Williams.
15:27Wonder Rat's gone there for his autobiography. Tell you what, let's throw him an autograph signing
15:33party in the prison library. Good idea, Kim. Okay, guys, name the place, if you will, please.
15:39Is it Key Largo, Key West, or Grand Bahama Island? Remember the clues that we heard?
15:44Southern end of overseas highway. Once Florida's largest city, and eight residents have won
15:49Pulitzer Prizes. Everybody's ready? Once you have that answer, lay it down right there in front of
15:52you, Nick. Okay, we're going to start with you, Yen. You have 75 crime bucks. How much did you risk?
15:56I risked 20 crime bucks. 20 crime bucks. What'd you say? I chose Key Largo. Sorry,
16:02Key Largo is not the answer we're looking for. You're going to go down 20, but this isn't over yet.
16:06Anything could happen. Nick, you have 85 crime bucks. How much did you risk? I wagered 30
16:10Acme crime bucks. 30 Acme crime bucks. And you, sir, what did you say? I chose Key West. Key West is
16:16right. Nice job. Takes up to 115. John, you're smiling, I see, but before we find out what you
16:23said, tell me how much did you risk? I wagered 20 crime bucks. 20 crime bucks. Now comes the big
16:27thing. What'd you say? I chose Key West. Key West is right. Nice job. That means John and Nick are going
16:32on to the next round. You, Yen, listen, you were a great detective. You were right in there
16:37to the very last. We've assembled a kit that's going to help you in your next case. Chief.
16:42It's the official Acme Crime Net travel kit. It includes an atlas for world travelers,
16:47an official Carmen watch, a Carmen t-shirt, a subscription to National Geographic World
16:58Magazine, and for quick reference when you're hanging on the rim, a portable globe.
17:07Good work. Nice shot, Chief. Okay, guys, now what you have to do is go to Key West to try to track
17:12down Wonder Rat. What you have to do is find him and bring back the statue. But, as you know,
17:17we're not sending our agents out into the field unprepared. Chief, how about a briefing?
17:24The boys down at Acme Photo Recon have put together a few slides on Key West. Now let's have a look.
17:32Key West, Florida. The westernmost of the Florida Keys. Coral islands that extend off the Florida
17:38peninsula. Once a pirate's lair, now tourists from all around the world come for its year-long
17:44sunshine. As a tropical paradise, Key West is hard to beat. Look for the statue sunbathing while the
17:51rat catches a cat nap. Ernest Hemingway's House. Hemingway found the quiet comfort of Key West, the
17:58ideal creative environment. He lived here while writing his novels, For Whom the Bell Tolls,
18:03and A Farewell To Arms. Nice wall, eh? Well, it's one of the many unusual sites found in Key West,
18:13but it's not there anymore. After an auto accident, it was taken down by its owner. Now this Acme
18:20bubble net agent has the right idea. If you feed the fish, they'll come across with info. This marker
18:27stands at the southernmost point in the U.S. outside of Hawaii. And, oh, no. Will you look at that?
18:35What? See those two names on top? Someone has thoughtlessly put graffiti on it. Let's try to get
18:43a closer look on them. Focus on them. Oh, yes. Sue and Janet. I can't quite make out the last names. Well,
18:53Sue and Janet, if you're watching this show, how does it feel to have five million people know you
18:59have defaced public property? But gumshoes, you've got more serious crimes to punish. Wonder Rat has
19:06taken the Togolese president's statue to Key West. Go get them. All right, guys, come on. Here we are in
19:13uh, Key West. Let's step down right there. Take a walk right over that way. Let me show you what we have.
19:17Here are the possible locations where you will be able to find Wonder Rat, the statue, and a warrant
19:21for Wonder Rat's arrest. The first thing you have to do is find the loot. That's the evidence you need
19:25so you can get the warrant. With the warrant, you can then arrest the crook. Now, connect all three of
19:29those things in that order in a single turn, and you get a chance to try to catch Carmen Sandiego. Catch

22:32Carmen Sandiego and get that trip. Do it. We're a little behind it. The cap was giving us some
22:49trouble, but it's off now, and we're rocking. Okay, good job. All right. You've thought about
22:54that, it looks like. Now, what we have to do is try to find Carmen Sandiego, and this phone
22:57conversation here that we have usually tells us about that. Hello. Yes, he's right here. Hello.
23:03If there's one thing a rat can do, it's rat. If you want to find Carmen Sandiego, sniff around Europe.

25:32today, but there's one more thing I want you to do. You know what it is?

25:51down to Belize. She'll take you for a ride on a lone boat to China. Tell me where in the world is
25:59Carmen Sandiego. Steal their soul in Top Korea. They can let it cut right off the roof of the Red Sea to
26:07Greenland. They'll be singing the blues. Well, they never liked and saw her steal.
26:12She'll be going from the jungle. Tell me where in the world is
26:21Carmen Sandiego. She's going to burn Nashville to Norway, but Andrew's in my wishy college.
26:25She'll take off my life. You're going to play back. Well, she'll ransack Pakistan and run a scam in
26:29In Scandinavia, makes you stick a bump down under and go make my pocket friends.
26:34When she was a fiction, misdemeanor, when she stole the beat from me, my tell me.
