00:00so dark matter is this invisible architect of the universe and even if it's invisible we can
00:27observe it indirectly through the effect it has on the stars in the background and in particular
00:33its gravity and that gravity will subtly bend the light from very distant galaxies
00:52as the light travels towards us from those distant galaxies at the other side of the universe
00:57it has to navigate its way through all the dark matter and light it turns out doesn't travel
01:01in straight lines it gets slightly bent all the time and what happens is that those distant
01:06galaxies appear slightly distorted they appear warped into unusual shapes and by looking at
01:12across the galaxies we sort of see oh there's one that looks like the milky way there's a fuzzy blob
01:16oh hang on there's a really unusual looking galaxy that's because it's got some dark matter in front
01:21of it so that's how dark how james webb space telescope can see dark matter even though it's invisible
