00:01A Roman-era shipwreck has been discovered off the coast of Sicily near Mazzaro del Vallo.
00:07The wreck dates back to between the 2nd and 1st centuries BC and lies at a depth of 46
00:12metres.
00:13Local media reported the ship is roughly 21 metres long and 6 metres wide.
00:20Footage released by Italian authorities show hundreds of amphores scattered around which
00:25the ship had been carrying, along with two lead anchor stalks.
00:29Italy's Minister of Culture Alessandro Giulli described the find as one of the most important
00:34underwater archaeological discoveries in recent years.
00:38Divers from the Cultural Heritage Protection Arm of Palermo's police said they located
00:43the site following a tip-off from a private citizen.
00:46Further research will now be carried out to reconstruct the site's archaeological context
00:51and establish the necessary measures for its protection.
00:55The discovery comes just days after another major find off the coast of Sicily, where
01:00a large underwater crater and new hydrothermal vents were found.
