U.S. President Donald Trump held bilateral talks with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, where security, NATO commitments, and Greenland dominated the discussion.
During remarks, Trump defended his stance on Greenland, saying it would be “very expensive” for the U.S. not to have control over the strategic territory, arguing that American security interests are better served with Greenland than without it.
The meeting comes amid growing transatlantic tensions and renewed debate over Arctic security, NATO unity, and U.S. influence in the region.

00:00Well thank you very much it's an honor to be with you and I thank the
00:29media for being here we've taken long trips and this was a long one but it's
00:35been working very well we're having tremendous meetings with heads of state
00:39with people a very big consequence having to do with war and peace which is
00:45why we're here and I just want to thank the secretary-general for being with us
00:50we have a few things to discuss it was a meeting I actually look very forward to
00:55he's doing a fantastic job we've been friends we lifted the GDP from 2% to
01:005% together that was done jointly and it worked out really very well and we
01:06appreciate it Mark so we'll be talking about various things we'll be talking
01:09about Greenland I imagine it may come up in our discussion and but I think the
01:16trip has been amazing so far it's been amazing as you know we're saying and
01:20tomorrow we're doing something else having to do with the board of peace we're
01:24getting tremendous acceptance of that it's gonna be great so we'll see how
01:29that all works out but we're doing that tomorrow so thank you very much media
01:33thank you very much and Mark we just wanted to say again as I did this
01:37morning when I was in a panel I want to thank you again for what you did since
01:41coming in in January Trump 47 basically getting the Europeans and Canada to really
01:48step up and that led to the enormous success we had in the egg with 5% which
01:52is crucial to defend ourselves and to also equalize this is what the US is
01:56paying this was a problem already there since Eisenhower I always tell the
02:00Europeans you're completely committed to NATO but there is also that one
02:03irritant and it is this factor that the Europeans were not paying the same as the
02:08US was paying and we solved it and this is crucial also because we need the money to
02:12protect ourselves there's one thing I heard you say yesterday and today you are not
02:16absolutely sure that the Europeans would come to the rescue of the US if you will
02:20be attacked let me tell you they will and they did in Afghanistan as you know
02:25for every American who paid the ultimate for every two Americans who paid the
02:30ultimate price price there was one soldier from another NATO country who did not
02:35come back to his family from the Netherlands from Denmark particularly for
02:39other countries so you can be assured absolutely if ever the US will be under
02:44attack your allies will be with you absolutely there's absolute guarantee I
02:48really want to tell you this because this is important it pains me if you think it
02:51is not and under your leadership this alliance is stronger than ever thank you
02:56very much it's a great compliment any questions the Danish foreign minister
03:02rejected your call to negotiate on Greenland what what will I didn't call him sorry the
03:09press the Danish foreign minister rejected what you said in your speech that you were hoping to
03:14negotiate to acquire Greenland essentially saying that this is not something that they
03:18are willing to discuss so what will those negotiations well they didn't tell me that so when they tell me
03:23because I don't like getting it second-hand if he wants to tell me he'll tell me that to my face
03:27and when will you be discussing this I have no idea when you said I'll be discussing it with this man
03:32right here mr. president he's frankly more important mr. president when you said you would
03:37remember if Denmark did not agree to a deal on Greenland what did you mean what are the consequences
03:43you'll have to figure that out for yourself you're a smart guy mr. president do you see a price for
03:48Greenland that's reasonable I could see that yeah I can see I could see that but there's a bigger
03:54price and that's the price of the price of safety and security and national security and international
04:00security having to do with many of your countries that's really the price and that's the big price and
04:06as you know we're doing the Golden Dome it's going to be very expensive and it's better if we have
04:12Greenland than it is without it's going to be safer it's going to be stronger it's going to be
04:16better for Europe and it's going to be better for us and so we'll see what happens any other question
04:23well I hope that that's true I mean he's he's a good man he's never lied to me before you know
04:37we've had a good relationship and he made that statement that's nice and I just you know when I
04:41see what's happening with Greenland I wonder because I want Greenland for security I don't
04:46want it for anything else we have so much rare earth we don't know what to do with it we don't
04:51need it for anything else and in terms of Greenland you know you have to go 25 feet down through ice
04:57to get it it's not it's not something that a lot of people are going to do or want to do no this is
05:02security we're talking about and I can say one thing about Mark he wants security and he wants security
05:07for all of us I think it's you know we're a member of NATO he wants security for NATO and beyond so
05:13when he says that Steve I think it's you know it's very nice okay thank you very much everybody thank
05:20you press thank you thank you press thank you press let's go let's go start moving
