00:00After our powerful winter storm we're still dealing with a country who's digging out and
00:09many regions are seeing these slick roads and power outages. We welcome you back to AccuWeather
00:16on this Monday. I'm Ariella Scalise and for those without power a quick reminder about
00:20generator safety. You want to keep generators outside at least 20 feet away from your home.
00:25Never in a garage or near open windows as that carbon monoxide can build up quickly.
00:30And a reminder it's odorless so this is one of the most important safety tips you can take. If you
00:35are using candles for lights place them away from anything that can burn and never leave them
00:38unattended. If your refrigerator has been without power here's the rule of thumb as long as the door
00:44stayed closed food stays safe for about four hours. A full freezer can hold its temperature roughly 48
00:51hours. When in doubt throw it out especially with dairy meat and leftovers and if you've set food
00:56outside in the snow remember that temperatures can fluctuate more than you think so that's not
01:01always reliable in the long-term options. How about those road conditions? Those are going to remain
01:07tricky even where plows have been through seeing a lot of refreeze and on those untreated surfaces.
01:12Ice really common around bridges, ramps, shaded back roads so take it slow and increase your following
01:18distance and avoid sudden braking. If you do start to slide ease off the gas and steer gently in the
01:25direction you want the front of the car to go. All right as we look ahead we're going to stay with
01:32those cold temperatures well below the historical average through the remainder of the week. So some tips
01:38here to minimize travel, stay indoors during the coldest part of the day and keep that winter survival
01:42kit in your car if you must travel. Also good idea to make sure you're learning how to shut off those
01:46water valves for potential pipe burst. Temperatures they may come above freezing in the afternoons but crash
01:53again at night so the refreeze continues to be a problem. Stay warm, stay safe and check on those
01:59neighbors who may need a hand.
