00:00The tropical cyclone Lawana is still tracking at a Category 1 intensity.
00:07It is expected to bring up damaging wind gusts of up to 130km per hour,
00:13but it is expected to intensify before it makes landfall.
00:17So it's expected to make landfall around 11am later this morning,
00:21right at the tip of the Dampier Peninsula as a Category 2 intensity.
00:25It's then expected to track southeast towards Derby.
00:28Heavy rainfall and strong winds have already started to settle in in some communities across the peninsula here.
00:34Severe weather warnings have also been issued for parts of the Kimberley, North Interior and Pilbara.
00:40There's also a Cyclone Watch and Act prepared to take shelter alert in place for the Dampier Peninsula
00:45and for communities further south, including Derby.
00:48We have seen cyclones go through these remote communities before and the damage that it has caused.
00:53This can be, you know, from trees being uprooted, power lines being damaged,
00:57even the potential for roofs to be blown off.
00:59So emergency services, they are now urging residents to stay as up to date as possible.
01:04They say now is not the time to be preparing the property.
01:07That time has now passed.
01:09And if you are within the path of the cyclone, it is now time to ensure that you enact your cyclone plan.
01:14And what is the latest from communities who are preparing for the cyclone?
01:21Yeah, so these residents from remote communities along the Dampier Peninsula, they now are preparing for their second cyclone in the past month.
01:28Over the new year period, they were impacted by ex-tropical cyclone Haley.
01:33And the arrival of Luana has coincided with their efforts to clean up.
01:37But what we have heard from this morning, we have heard from Adia Loon community CEO.
01:41He has reported that 73 millimetres of rain has fallen over their community overnight, with heavy downpours still to come.
01:48We have also heard from further south in Derby, the Shire president there.
01:52He is just advising residents to stay up to date as possible and not become complacent as they brace for the cyclone.
02:00We do also know that some residents have already evacuated yesterday.
02:04We spoke to one resident, she was one of 50 locals who evacuated from the community of Jarrodin yesterday.
02:09She was understandably pretty nervous given the damage they had seen from ex-tropical cyclone Haley.
02:15So these evacuation centres are open in Broome and Derby today.
02:19We are just advising residents to stay up to date with emergency WA weather warnings and alerts and of course ABC's role in coverage.
