00:00After a night of wild winds, heavy rain and power cuts, the clean up begins. Derby residents
00:11woke on Sunday to find uprooted trees and toppled fences.
00:15I think we've got away with it a lot. A lot of other people in town had a bit more worser
00:22cases.
00:23Trees down in the backyard, it got so soaked, they've literally just fallen over and the
00:27roots are sticking up.
00:28Howling, winds, noisy, just like a train, but a non-stop train. And at one stage there
00:36I thought, stop, I don't want this noise anymore.
00:38Remote communities on the Dampier Peninsula were impacted first as the cyclone crossed
00:44the coast as a Category 2 system on Saturday afternoon. Authorities had more than ten calls
00:49for help. Local prisoners helping clear fallen trees in Derby.
00:54Ex-tropical cyclone Luana dumped more than 200 millimetres of rain in some areas, with authorities
01:01predicting more to come over the next two days. The focus now turning to inland communities
01:07vulnerable to flooding.
01:09Everyone's pretty used to this sort of weather this time of year and so are well stocked
01:13and have had their continued supplies coming in. But as we see the weather system through
01:17the week, there's potential for persistent thunderstorms and rainfall. So we'll just
01:22watch that and as required people can reach out and seek support.
01:25Residents and tourists are being urged to take care on the roads and reconsider their travel.
