00:00This is Korea 1952. The combat zone has developed into a sporadic twilight war of artillery duels and night patrol. Flash attacks in small areas, rollovers and rollbacks, and positions that change hands over and over and over again, until neither side could say what positions it controlled. Not even the soldiers themselves.
00:27And these are the soldiers. Officers like Lieutenant Tom Flagler, whose decisions must not be wrong. Non-coms like Sergeant Vince Gasperi, who must see these decisions carried out. And the men who follow. Felix, who tries to laugh at war. Stacey, who fights it with his Browning automatic rifle.
00:48O'Hirons, to whom the battlefield is the shortest route home. Moose, the communications man. Geronimo, the Apache Indian, taking to a modern kind of war path.
00:59Marku, the boy. The only one who didn't have to cross an ocean to find this war. There's the mortar team, George and Strangler. Called the plumbers because of that tube that spits death.
01:11And the other soldiers of the United Nations, as represented by the British tankers, Sergeant Kemsumit, Corporal Enoch, and Private Fortinoy.
01:22Every soldier fights his own war. But win or lose, he tries to do that which is the most difficult of all things in war.
01:31He tries to stay alive.
01:33He can take place.
02:00Let's go.

11:15Separated from your column, Sergeant?
11:17No, sir.
11:18Our tank was dug in on a forward outpost on Hill 801.
11:21Chinese rolled over and bypassed us.
11:24They lost a couple of crewmen in the fight.
11:26You know, a part of a larger force?
11:29Much of you is all we've got.
11:30We were an I-combat patrol out of Easy Company.
11:34Walked right into their big push.
11:36This is the piece they got out.
11:38How's your radio?
11:39Knocked out.
11:39Moose, any luck?
11:42Still on sick call, Lieutenant.
11:44Could be fatal.
11:45Well, stay with it.
11:47We've been rattling around trying to get back to Easy Company.
11:50Bouncing off red patrols and all.
11:51We've worked our way around to here.
11:53Behind the muscle.
11:54The muscle?
12:00Sullivan's muscle.
12:01For Captain Sullivan of Easy Company.
12:03Hill 806.
12:05They must have evacuated that hill.
12:07Our whole line's been broken.
12:10The muscle is the key to this whole range of hills.
12:12They wouldn't bug out of that position.
12:13Well, even if your company is there,
12:14it'd be far more sensible ahead south.
12:17Easy Company needs us.
12:18We're headed up there, Sergeant.
12:28You can come along if you want to.
12:29We married up with these foot soldiers, David.
12:43We'd have scouting and security.
12:45And the petrol's low.
12:46We don't know where our people are with.
12:47We might stall out before reaching into thee.
12:49The sound of the tank carries, sir.
13:03You have to put your scouts far out.
13:04Vince, put that on the tank.
13:06On your feet.
13:06We're in a hand here.
13:07You ain't gonna take that beast along.
13:10We're not gonna leave it here.
13:11What do we do with it?
13:12Its mating call carries 50 miles.
13:14You heard the man, Felix.
13:18You did fine, lady.
13:21Stay with him.
13:31He can take it, lady.
13:32These married men can take most anything.
13:37A magnet.
13:44That's what it is.
13:45It's a magnet.
13:46It'll draw every red in Korea.
13:48Aye, nah, kid, Felix.
13:50You make more noise than Phyllis.
13:51They're putting everything in cans these days.
13:54What are you, Peaches?
13:55The name's Arie.
13:57Addie?
13:58Peaches, I can tell by your honest face
14:00that she was framed.
14:01Now, I'll tell you what.
14:02If the moon's full tonight,
14:04I'll slip you a can opener.
14:05Geronimo?
14:07Take my coup.
14:09First scout, 200 yards out.
14:10You stay 100 yards behind him.
14:12Move.
14:18Felix and Moose,
14:19right and left flankers.
14:21Vince, bring up the rear.
14:22Stacy, you stick with Vince.
14:25Let's go.
14:25Let's go.
14:40Let's go.
14:41Let's go.
15:11Let me up out of here.
15:22Lie back now, soldier. Take it easy.
15:24But let me up.
15:24Listen to the lady, Dan. She knows.
15:28How'd I get on this rowdy coaster, lieutenant?
15:31The boys chipped in and treated you.
15:34You cop one, Dan, but stay with it.
15:36We'll get you back to Maggie, two-story frame house, Patterson, the home of Gilla.
15:40Who's your lady friend?
15:42Best-looking nurse on the peninsula.
15:45And don't get fresh. Your royal lady would knock your ears off.
15:49Ain't it the truth?
15:50When it's bad, talk to him about his hometown, Patterson, New Jersey.
15:58Maggie's his wife. He's crazy about her.
16:02Know anything about baseball?
16:04A little.
16:05He's got a dream he dreams all the time.
16:07That Boston is beating the Yanks.
16:09If he gets violent, tell him Boston won.
16:11You a good friend of yours?
16:13Depends on what you mean by friend.
16:14Well, you seem to know all about him.
16:21Vincent Kaspari.
16:23Wife, two kids, girls.
16:25Paying off the mortgage on a small house in Los Angeles.
16:27Likes to fish.
16:29Going to college when he's discharged.
16:32Felix O'Hara.
16:33Age 24.
16:35Cotton salesman out of Memphis.
16:37Studied accounting nights.
16:38Four girlfriends.
16:39Engaged to three of them.
16:40Probably married the other.
16:41Stacy Della Nueva.
16:44Fair middleweight fighter worried about putting on pounds.
16:47Wife in Duluth.
16:49What's your story, lieutenant?
16:51Work that out for yourself, lady.
16:53Didn't you come to Korea for adventure?
16:55My job brought me here.
16:58Had all the adventure I could handle on my back porch.
17:01I can see why.
17:03Where's your back porch?
17:05Evansville, Indiana.
17:07She won't find it where you're looking.
17:09You talk big city.
17:11Go to college in New York.
17:12There are a couple of other big cities.
17:15Like Chicago.
17:17Institute of Technology.
17:19Not married.
17:21Probably not engaged.
17:22By your own choice.
17:25Well, now you know all about me, too.
17:27It's important here, lady.
17:28I gotta know which way you'll jump when something pops.
17:31What do you think?
17:34You'll do.
17:36I'll do what?
17:37What?
17:37What?
17:40What?
17:50What?
17:51What?
18:04What?
18:04Help cover it up.
18:34Fins, take the front.
19:04Fins, take the front.
19:19Fins, take the front.
19:27Fins, take the front.
19:40Steady now, I'll say when.
19:41No, sergeant, I'll say when.
19:57Forget my rank and sound off.
20:06You'll feel better.
20:07A small mop-up patrol we could have smeared.
20:10I'm not out to win the war here, sergeant.
20:12I don't want to attract attention.
20:14You yanks have to run the show, don't you?
20:17So you don't like us colonials, eh?
20:20Now that's a crying shame.
20:23Get ready to go.
20:25And if that scout had gotten any closer, he could have enlisted.
20:28That's as close as I like it, mister.
20:30I'm tight.
20:31Felix is down there, keep an eye on them.
20:34What am I, the only guy on salary?
20:46This is the sloppiest battle for you.
20:49Hold it down.
20:50Lieutenant.
20:55It could be.
20:57See if any of these are alive, Moose.
21:00You never can tell, Lieutenant, the way the lines work out in this mess.
21:03Some are always bleeding into networks.
21:05With our luck, these will probably lead to the Russian embassy.
21:08The poor bloke.
21:10This rattling tank, his wound can't close.
21:13Don't be angry with him, miss.
21:15She was made to kill.
21:16She does that well.
21:17Come on, help me.
21:23Hello?
21:24Hello?
21:25Anything doing?
21:26This is easy patrol one.
21:27Hello?
21:28Hello?
21:32Who said you could bring him down?
21:34He's had all he can take.
21:35That shaking, jolting tank is tearing him apart.
21:37It takes four tired men to carry him, lady.
21:39I need every man and his rifle.
21:40I don't care much what you need.
21:42You want this man to die?
21:43Ohians understands.
21:44Put him on the tank and keep him in one piece.
21:46That's your job.
21:47Dan's a little guy, Lieutenant.
21:49I could pack him on my back.
21:50I'll spell the sergeant.
21:51Alright.
21:52Mortar.
22:01Hello?
22:02Hello?
22:03Do you hear me?
22:04Anybody there?
22:05Hello?
22:06Hello!
22:12What gives?
22:13Must be that red patrol that passed.
22:15I guess he ran into something down there.
22:21A couple of plumbers.
22:32How'd they get here?
22:34Probably the same way we did.
22:35Fire!
22:46Fire and move!
22:51That would have been right on the nose.
23:08Those reds are darn good.
23:10Fire!
23:16Those guys were good.
23:18But only second best after all.
23:20I could cry.
23:22Fire!
23:28Let's go!
23:43I picked a fine time to foul up!
23:45I'm sorry, George.
23:46It must be a die.
23:47You're a clobberhead!
23:48If you just wouldn't be so loud.
23:49It's all your fault.
24:07The reds wouldn't have spotted us if you hadn't have moved.
24:09And you ought to feed you to them.
24:10It's my fault, George.
24:11Absolutely.
24:11But you'll get me out of it.
24:12You're the greatest boy the way you got that mortar.
24:15Man, am I glad to see you people.
24:16I'll bet you are.
24:18Where's your outfit, soldier?
24:19They got chewed up this morning.
24:21Me and the strangler played dead.
24:23The reds moved on past keeping up the pressure.
24:25We've just been trying to raise up.
24:30We'll have to fight them now.
24:33Vince.
24:38Come on.
24:38Get down with Vince.
24:56Get down with Vince.
24:58Spread out.
24:58Get down with Vince.
25:28Get down with Vince.
25:40Here they come!
25:43Now's the time.
25:44Point blank.
25:45Fire at will.
25:46Hey!
26:16Oh, my God.
26:46Hello, hello. Anybody sober? Good morning.
26:50Good night.
27:16Good girl, Phyllis.
27:36Oh, you've earned your key.
27:40We accept your apology.
27:46Okay, back it up.
27:48All right, Ben.
28:05A tank.
28:07Easy company's gonna like you.
28:08What's so unusual?
28:18Nothing, nothing.
28:24Geronimo, Marko, same deal.
28:25Fine cover for the tank.
28:26I'll take a moose.
28:40Where we going, Lieutenant?
28:42Sullivan's muscle.
28:45It's awful quiet up there, Lieutenant.
28:48There was heavy fire up there this morning, sir, and then it stopped sudden.
28:51Like somebody pulled a switch.
28:53If anyone knows for sure, that Easy Company isn't on that hill.
28:57Speak up.
29:21Does he know what he's doing?
29:25He's an army pro.
29:27Got an Easy Company's home, mother and apple pie to the man.
29:30How can he be sure his company's on that hill?
29:34The man's got an instinct about the company.
29:37Something comes right up through the soles of his boots and leads him to it every time.
29:41He could be wrong.
29:43He could be.
29:44It's not likely.
29:59You cotton-piggin.
30:03Felix, my lad, you'll catch your death at home.
30:07Don't make jokes, Addie.
30:10One of my best friends is open to exposure and pain.
30:13With a size 8 be of any hope.
30:16Peaches, you British doll.
30:18You never told me we had the same size feet.
30:20You never asked.
30:30Go forward, Moose.
30:31I'll take him.
30:31I'll carry that for you, mister.
30:45Lady, you can have anything I've got except this gun.
30:47Besides, do you want to lose your arm at the standing?
30:49Lady, you mean if I don't carry a gun, they can't shoot at me?
30:53That's what the book says.
30:55Of course, most of these people can't read.
30:58That's a foreign figure of a soldier you make.
31:01Ought I, though?
31:02I'll tell you a secret.
31:04It's the man, not the uniform.
31:06Ah, so that's what it is.
31:08Yep.
31:08Thanks, old buddy-buddy.
31:09I'll save you a dance.
31:10Imported.
31:26Just keep carrying that tube.
31:27Never mind that stuff the gun that carries his own weapon.
31:30You're always complaining.
31:31Look, you wouldn't last five minutes in this war without me.
31:33Now, five loving minutes.
31:34I know that, George.
31:36I don't mean anything.
31:37I just thought you might spell me for a while.
31:39Will you just shut up, huh, and carry your load?
31:42Look, Strangler, I'll look after you.
31:43I'll even do your thinking for you.
31:44But just shut up now, huh?
31:45Hey.
31:47Knock it off or keep it to yourselves.
31:49You hear him?
31:50Quit complaining.
31:53He's always riding the little guy.
31:55Why don't you stop him?
31:57Every man fights his own war, lady.
31:59And every man's afraid.
32:01The big guy burns off by riding the little guy.
32:04Doesn't make it right.
32:06Strangler carries the big man on his back like I'm carrying Dan.
32:09Feel sorry for George, lady.
32:13He's the one that's hurting.
32:15Don't be so sure of everything and everyone.
32:18You could be wrong.
32:19Can't afford to be.
32:20Not about my people.
32:22Now take you.
32:23Like the rest, you're afraid.
32:26To ease up your nerves and jump at everything I say.
32:28All right, Lieutenant.
32:30That's the rest of us.
32:31You're the only one that's not afraid of anything.
32:37Stop a minute.
32:38I think his bandage is loose.
32:39Make it tight, lady.
33:01Stop calling me lady.
33:04I've got a name.
33:06But you are a lady.
33:11Is that thing loaded?
33:13Yeah, why?
33:14Back in Evansville, I used to handle fresh guys' bare knuckles.
33:21But a girl has to keep up with the times.
33:23Stacey, bring him along.
33:37We haven't got enough petrol to go on like this, sir.
33:41All right, we'll take the shortcut then.
33:42All right, let's go.
34:12Freeze.
34:41We're in a minefield.
34:42Hey, help me.
34:48Stranglers hurt.
34:49Nobody move.
34:50Nobody move.
34:50Let's take him behind the tank.
35:14You follow me.
35:18Geronimo, pick up this gear.
35:19Aye.
