Six people confirmed missing after landslide at New Zealand campsite

Six people have been confirmed missing in a landslide that ripped through a busy campground on New Zealand's North Island, authorities said on Jan. 23, 2026, as emergency crew continued to comb through the rubble. Heavy rains triggered the landslide on Jan. 22 at Mount Maunganui on the island's east coast at 9:30 a.m., bringing soil and rubble down on the busy campsite in the city of Tauranga, where families were enjoying summer school holidays. New Zealand's Prime Minister Christopher Luxon visited the scene, describing the incident as 'an absolute tragedy' and telling reporters that 'New Zealand is full of grief today' as he met with emergency personnel leading the rescue operation. New Zealand officials have not reported any deaths at the campground.
