00:00Which EU countries have the greenest electricity consumption rates?
00:06Green electricity use across the European Union has surged over the past two decades.
00:12In 2004, it accounted for just 16% of total electricity consumption.
00:18Ten years later, that figure climbed to nearly 29%, and today it stands at 47.5%.
00:26These figures cover all electricity coming from renewable sources, including that imported from abroad.
00:33Leading the ranking is Austria, where around 90% of electricity consumption comes from renewables, largely thanks to hydroelectric power.
00:42Sweden comes narrowly behind with 88%, powered by wind and water.
00:48Another Nordic country, Denmark, is third, with 80% fueled by its widespread offshore and onshore wind turbine network.
00:57Rates, significantly over 50%, were also registered in Portugal, Spain and Croatia.
01:04At the same time, the lowest proportions of green electricity use were found in Malta, the Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Hungary and Cyprus.
01:13Overall, wind energy accounts for the largest share of renewable sources, with 38% of the total, followed by hydro.
01:21The fastest growing one, however, is solar, which went from just 1% in 2008 to over 23% in 2024.
