07:15They've all been stripped back to basics, so the hosts can put their own stamp on them.
07:20Over the next five days, they'll be tested on all the skills needed to run a B&B.

07:34Justin's done runway fashion shows, that sort of thing before, and I've done lots of launches of window schemes and lots of pop-ups.

12:50As the sun rises in southwest France, six sleepy-eyed hosts are about to take on a challenge like nothing they've ever experienced.

13:14Well, with my penchant for an eye mask and earplugs, I actually slept really well.

14:56over the next five days the hosts will face a series of challenges set by the judges
15:01to test who has what it takes to run a bmb at the end of the week one couple will be eliminated
15:09and the others will head to finals week oh do you want to get that it's nine o'clock on the dot and
15:18the first challenge is about to arrive oh oh someone at the door yeah

16:04you will have to furnish all three bnb rooms a judge will arrive to inspect your first bnb room at
16:113 pm after this point you will not be allowed to make any changes to your bnb oh guests will arrive

17:45sheets and stuff that's everything else joe and guy have managed to get most of what they need but
17:50they've had to make some compromises there are no white pillowcases anywhere we can't find them
17:56we've got two gray and two white now so here instead of four white it's gonna make the room look
18:01better despite the time constraints justin and paul have got everything on their list
18:09and it's all in keeping with their aesthetic the sales team were really helpful in there
18:15trying to find us things we've got some good stuff which i think is gonna show what we want isn't it

25:30touches i think tell you a lot about how successful that bnb might be

25:43so we kind of tried to keep it quite simple in here now what did you bring from home so the artichoke
25:50candle holders we bought the monochrome cushions excellent and the black um bedspread did you put
25:57in the the rugs yeah sorry we bought them from home as well very good they came from home is very good
26:02nice touch because i need sockets in it yeah this is the private bathroom for that room for tonight

26:51so we've decided to call our bnb residents are because we're residents and our surname's rates
26:58there's a detail here with the all on the door personalization is very important we really want
27:06to get to know a bit more about the hosts and what they like and why they want to do that what
27:11represents them okay you've named the bedroom yes so we've named the bedrooms residents are stargazing
27:24so tell me about this bedroom what have you done since you've arrived so for our guests
27:30um to make them feel most comfortable we went just for a plain bedding i see that you've also added
27:37some welcome biscuits and is it a potpourri or oh no some walnuts as well yeah again a reference to the
27:43dolden and the specialties from the region that's right and i see there's also a sign with a little
27:48text is it about the name of the room yes so that's just behind the name of the room it's just a little
27:53poem and then we've also come up with a little hospitality pack since me and breath come we
28:00have been roasting toasting so i think all women would love isn't it so nice we are melting
28:10meanwhile justin and paul are in nicola's hands
28:15the green room as we call it oh this is very very fresh and pretty yeah with your garden outside
28:22little um terrace for the guests make the bed look as inviting and squishy and delicious as possible
28:31you can put fresh flowers from your garden i think that's the way to put your own stamp on it
28:37it's a very inviting bed yes i think it's a really nice room actually and what is that the hanging space
28:44yeah good hanging and you picked some hydrangeas from the garden yeah hydrangeas from the garden
28:49color that works perfectly as well pink is picked up that's lovely yeah just some fresh still water
28:57and then just quite a big bathroom yeah plenty of room there isn't a bin in a bin's vital yeah yeah

29:24really begin to scrutinize with a fine tooth comb there's water marks there on the chrome
29:33i can't believe how strong the branding is so early in the competition as well
29:37residents are feels like it's been there forever i'm really impressed
29:45i mean it's looking great no it's very clean oh it's rather long dark hair on there okay
29:56that's a big oversight because it's an obvious hair and i know that we're looking for fault but if a
30:03guest sees that that's one of the worst things is to find somebody else's hair yeah it just hasn't
30:10got a bin which is useful or any tissues and just a little bit of dust on the wall radiator
30:20i think justin will have made an excellent start it seems they're both very creative types so i think
30:26they'll probably want to run a b and b that's beautiful and full of flowers and nice things to
30:33look at bin gate that's that bit over for now yeah um so i'm a little disappointed about a couple of
30:42things okay there's probably a couple of areas where we could have cleaned a little bit better i think
30:50we were so fixed on getting the room furnished excited a bit nervous because i just feel a little
30:58bit under prepared yeah but it's been a learning curve today a couple of things that she pointed out
31:08which is actually good and we missed is tissues and a waste paper bin
31:14now the competition is about to really heat up the next knock on the door will be their first guests
31:27and the judges will be watching something that i will be evaluating today as well is their
31:34ability to sort of put their game face on you know their guests face on really
31:40if they're frazzled if they're stressed then when they hear the knock on the door they can't act
31:51frazzled and stressed we have a phrase that we use which is dr footlights the uh the lights come on

35:09we've already turned the air conditioning on so it should be quite nice and cool cozy um obviously
35:13hanging space here and here extra pillows down i have shut the blind just so the sun didn't come
35:22in oh okay but hopefully you'll be happy in here yeah um there's some water and towels and a little
35:28welcome pack of bath and toiletries for you the check-in is complete oh oh this is nice and with the
35:41hosts out of earshot friendly but almost trying too hard i thought the room feedback begins
35:49bubble back so this is a body wash for bubble bud there is no button the whole residence
35:55are branding things feels less personal it was a little bit manufactured
36:00on their very first day as hosts three couples have just welcomed their very first guests
36:17it was very kind of them to actually put the blinds on
36:20and even the ac you know that was a nice touch reshma and manish are the guests at joe and guys
36:31it's okay it is nice yeah after a long drive what they have done they have given three different uh
36:38uh softness you know whichever we want we can use that that is a nice touch
36:45that's good check the bathroom now yes let's do that a bit of a long day some mistakes but in general
36:51i think it's gone pretty well overall i think i'd probably score us a seven out of ten
36:57hair dryer yeah yeah that is a good touch if we've forgotten anything really drastic hopefully not
37:05peter and anis are settling in at nicole and bratz
37:08it's sweetest is our deodorant oh and hand cream that makes you smile
37:23look at that poor wow i am straight in there later
37:31i think the pressure today for the printers and all paid off yeah most definitely absolutely
37:36and with us we just work as a team to get things done um and probably work better under pressure

37:50there's lots of room in the bathroom she's good i've got a special shelf just my sponge

38:23we're still working out where things are like one minute i'm looking in the drawer thinking is that
38:33where the knives and forks are and it's not it's tin foil i thought the ring was really nice
38:38yes it's far cooler than i thought it was going to be yeah that's true
38:42let's be ourselves so do you know i mean we can't be anybody else no i know but just
38:46maybe just we need to relax a little bit more
38:52the hosts are slowly finding their feet but it's down to the judges to decide who is pulling ahead
38:58and who is falling behind so as the sun begins to set it's time for the judges hq
39:07so we've met the couples three very very lovely energetic couples who really want this prize they're
39:21very hungry for the prize well i went to visit justin and paul it was nice they'd done some lovely
39:29little touches they'd picked some hydrangeas from the garden there were a couple of things missing like
39:35bins and tissues it's a big miss actually yeah and then the guests arrived and they were obviously
39:42quite nervous a little bit anxious so that made a bit of an awkward social situation and then so they
39:49got up from waiting to have their tea and went to see their room and and then we had the the typical
39:55this is your water this is your bedside table this is your bathroom this is your terrace perfectly
40:02obvious stuff which you actually don't need to point out so it wasn't the smoothest arrival
40:08we're going to put an umbrella up for you guys are you do you want to sit on like that are you
40:13more in in shade or or do you want a lounger wherever yeah okay cool do you feel like the main
40:20thing they will need to work on for tomorrow is sort of the that warmth in terms of the arrival at home
40:26they were warm but they just weren't completely themselves right
40:33yeah that's nice isn't it yeah because they could bring the the chairs back because that's in the
40:38shade we had joe and guy i have to say very very good yeah they had towels rolled they had a bottle of
40:47water for the guests they'd set the air conditioner on so the room was cool when the guests walked in
40:53we serve a continental breakfast okay so there will be juices hams cheese croissants bread cereals
41:01but we'll also do eggs as well on request benedict uh not benedict that's that's not on the menu yet
41:10oh we've got avocado taste as well okay there was just one very negative aspect which we
41:18were very surprised about on inspecting the bedroom which was pristine there was one long hair
41:27tucked kind of under the scatter cushion all on the beds right guys make yourselves comfortable uh we'll
41:34get you some drinks we'll put them on here for you and then i'll pop your towels here too and you just
41:39relax thank you thank you so much how did you get on eva you know what i was so impressed by brett and
41:46nicole today to start with they've branded the property they've got stickers with the brand on it
41:53she did the research she went to print everything in town it's lovely to see that they've done this
41:58much research another thing they did i added to the list is they named all the bedrooms every bedroom
42:05as a different name and with that they created um low frames with the poem there's the uh breakfast
42:13menu for the morning breakfast uh from eight to ten anything you need brett will be on back and call
42:20there's actually a bell there behind you so if you need anything just just give that a day yeah and
42:27someone will come running most of the time it'll be me but the named room things is quite hotel-y isn't it
42:34it is i suppose it depends on the size of your property for a bnb as well but they're really
42:38trying to work on the personalization aspect which is so key they're really showing their character
42:45the hosts have all had their successes and fails
42:49now the competition is out of the starting blocks
42:53so day one is over and i'm so glad because now it's time for a nice deserving rose wine
43:00i'm gonna have a hug tomorrow once we've done our first breakfast
43:06then it will become part and parcel and we're feeling more relaxed and i think feel like we're at home
43:14these are prep for tomorrow preparation is key we will do better tomorrow yeah come on we will do
43:20better we will do better tomorrow yes the energy level yes come on it's all gonna be fine
43:30new challenges lie ahead and the hosts will be stretched to their limits again tomorrow
43:36but they've all come here determined to win the prize of a lifetime
43:41and nobody intends to go home without a fight what an exciting week i know i'm i have a really good
43:49feeling of this week in fact a really good feeling that has a kind of a uh an underlying anxiety
43:55because how would we make a choice competition's really tough this week isn't it and i think maybe
44:00we have to be as critical of those challenges as we are nice about their achievements definitely absolutely
44:06yeah we'll see how they handle the pressure of the next challenges then adama
44:15next time that one's a bit messy the hosts face their first breakfast i'm not sure if they're from the
44:23bakers the pressure begins to mount it's going to be friend all in the bed it's a competition and we're
44:30on a budget so and a curveball leaves everyone reeling guests early okay what what what what else
44:38no not painting right there if you had got the cracked sheets this wouldn't maybe happen
