00:10The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, defended European independence in Davos as U.S. President promotes his expansionist foreign policy.
00:19Macron did not directly address Trump but did not shy away from the subject either.
00:49The French leader said it is not time for, quote, new imperialism or new colonialism, but instead a time of cooperation to fix global challenges.

01:48She called on Europe to seize the moment as Donald Trump promotes his expansionist foreign policy,
01:53appending the Transatlantic Alliance along the way.
01:56The geopolitical shocks can and must serve as an opportunity for Europe.
02:04And in my view, the seismic change we are going through today is an opportunity, in fact, a necessity to build a new form of European independence.
02:17Although this is not the first time von der Leyen has called for greater autonomy,
02:22her speech took on a new meaning against the backdrop of the extraordinary crisis pitting the two sides of the Atlantic against each other.
02:30United States President threatened to impose a 10% tariff on eight European countries, all NATO members.
02:37Donald Trump is seeking to strong-arm the sail of Greenland, a Danish territory.
02:41The threat could upend 80 years of alliance and fuel serious fears of an irreversible fracture.
02:48Trump's tariffs will kick in next month, unless the Europeans, who are betting on diplomacy to de-escalate,
02:55can convince him to change his mind.
02:56California's Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom urged Europe to develop a backbone and punch him in the face
03:07as he spoke to reporters at the World Economic Forum in Davos referring to U.S. President Donald Trump.
03:14In blunt remarks, Newsom called Trump weak, stressing that the European Union should push back against him very aggressively.
03:22The EU is continuing to weigh countermeasures after Trump threatened tariffs on eight European countries,
03:52who spoke out in support of Denmark, in its row with Washington over Greenland.
03:57Trump warned that any retaliatory tariffs against the U.S. would be unwise and trigger further action against Europe.
04:05Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron, who was personally threatened with a 200% tariff over additional disagreements with Trump,
04:13has called on the EU to use its so-called trade bazooka, the anti-coercion instrument, in the face of these threats.
04:22Newsom asserted that Europeans need to be more bold, stop trying to appease Trump, and, quote,
04:28fight fire with fire.
04:33More than 2,000 demonstrators took to the streets on Monday in Zurich, the Swiss capital,
04:39to protest against U.S. President Donald Trump and the World Economic Forum currently taking place in Davos.
04:46The protesters, belonging to environmental and left-wing groups, contested what they called a meeting of oligarchs.
04:55Among the slogans chanted was, Trump is not welcome.
04:59One of the protesters set fire to a U.S. flag, and there was tensions with the police.
05:04The demonstrators threw fire crackers, smoke bombs, and fireworks,
05:08while the police responded with water cannons, tear gas, and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.
05:14No injuries were reported.
05:17Protests also took place in Davos, venue of the World Economic Forum,
05:21following the Oxfam report on the increase in the wealth of billionaires worldwide.
05:26The U.K. has approved plans for China to build a massive new embassy in central London on Tuesday,
05:39overlooking widespread opposition from lawmakers over potential security risks.
05:45Critics have long warned that the proposed embassy, said to be China's largest in Europe,
05:50could be used as a base for espionage, and increased risks of surveillance and intimidation of Chinese dissidents in exile.
05:57Plans for the embassy have been plagued by objections and protests since 2018,
06:02after China's government purchased the site at Royal Mint Court, near the Tower of London for £225 million.
06:10Opponents say the huge complex sits too close to underground fiber-optic cables,
06:14carrying sensitive financial information between London's two main financial districts.
06:20U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer's government had repeatedly postponed its decision in recent months,
06:25after multiple cases of alleged Chinese spying underlined alarms about the proposed embassy.
06:31In a statement, the government said plans for construction have been formally approved,
06:36and are considered final, unless successfully challenged in court.
06:40Opposition lawmakers slammed the decision,
06:43accusing Starmer of compromising on national security in a bid to boost relations with Beijing.
06:50Israeli bulldozers began demolitions at the headquarters of the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees,
06:58UNRWA, in occupied East Jerusalem on Tuesday.
07:02The organization denounced the move, calling it an unprecedented attack,
07:07slamming it as a violation of international law,
07:10and the privileges and immunities of the United Nations.
07:13UNRWA spokesperson Jonathan Fowler said Israeli forces stormed into the compound
07:17shortly after 7 a.m. local time and ousted security guards before rolling in bulldozers.
07:24He warned that the move should not be taken lightly by non-governmental organizations
07:28or the international community,
07:30stressing that what happened to UNRWA can happen to any other NGO
07:33or diplomatic mission in the future.
07:36Far-right National Security Minister Itamar Bengvir visited the site
07:40and celebrated what he called, quote,
07:42a very important day for governance in Jerusalem.
07:46He denounced UNRWA as an organization that harbors and supports terrorism,
07:50warning that other supporters of terror can expect the same fate.
07:54The incumbent Israeli government has repeatedly accused UNRWA of providing cover for Hamas members,
08:00but has never provided concrete evidence to back up those allegations.
08:03The number of deaths in a crackdown by authorities during Iran's ongoing nationwide anti-government protests
08:13now exceeds 4,000, according to the U.S.-based human rights activist's news agency.
08:20They fear the number will grow far higher as information leaks out of the country,
08:25still gripped by the government's decision to shut down the Internet.
08:29Iranian officials have not given a clear death toll,
08:32but Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei acknowledged for the first time on Saturday
08:37that the protests had left several thousand people dead, blaming the United States.
08:42The agency also reported over 26,000 people had been arrested.
08:48Comments from officials have led to fears of some of those detained being put to death.

09:13An overnight Russian bombardment has left thousands of residential buildings in Kyiv without heating and water,
09:24as temperatures dropped to minus 14 degrees Celsius, Ukrainian authorities said on Tuesday.
09:30According to local officials, the barrage of hundreds of drones and missiles,
09:35which targeted energy facilities across Ukraine killed at least one 50-year-old man near Kyiv.
09:42Ukraine's Air Force said Russia fired some 339 long-range combat drones and 34 missiles in the overnight barrage.
09:52Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who had recently complained of slow arms deliveries,
09:57said Ukraine had received a shipment of ammunition for air defense systems just a day before the attack.
