00:00All right, it's your girl Lori Mack here from 105 When the Bounce,
00:02and I am sitting here with an amazing actor, Brian Karstaufen.
00:07He plays Derrick Brown in Stranger in Our House,
00:09a series that's available on Tubi and Amazon Prime.
00:13First, congratulations on season two.
00:15Thank you, thank you. I appreciate that.
00:16Yes, thank you so much for being here.
00:18It's an honor to be here.
00:19I know it because how season one went, let me tell you,
00:23I'm shocked for season two.
00:24Yeah, season two is definitely going to be a good one.
00:26I mean, it's a lot of twists and turns like the first season,
00:30but just even more bigger suspense.
00:34I would say without giving too much away,
00:36how would you describe your character to someone who's never seen the show?
00:40I would describe him unpredictable.
00:41You never know what's going to happen next.
00:43So, I mean, you just kind of got to keep your head on the swivel
00:47with a person like Derrick.
00:49No, I understand, though, truthfully,
00:51because when I watched the first season, I loved it.
00:53I thought it was great.
00:54You definitely have to check it out on Tubi now,
00:55Amazon Prime is, I mean,
01:00I have questions.
01:03Like, man, the mama, I mean, your mama, everybody just acts.
01:05They did their thing.
01:06How is it like offset?
01:09Is it the same way?
01:10Is it jokes?
01:11Is it drama?
01:12Like, how does it feel when you're not working on camera?
01:15It's offset.
01:16I mean, it's just normal.
01:18My life is normal, offset.
01:19I mean, it's chill.
01:20Even during our framing process,
01:21like when we done,
01:22like, you know, when we done between takes and stuff,
01:25like, we just be chilling.
01:26But, like, when the camera roll, like, you know, it's work.
01:29You snap right back into it.
01:31So, but, yeah, like, outside of filming,
01:32like, my life is chill.
01:33I'll be chilling out the way.
01:36And, you know, when it's time to work,
01:38it's time to work.
01:38Now, you've, when you first got presented this role,
01:42was this something that you see yourself doing,
01:44or this is something that's completely out the box?
01:46You know, it's crazy.
01:47It, honestly, it was something that I kind of had, like,
01:51questions about if I could do.
01:53Because, like, you know, before that,
01:54like, some of the roles and stuff I did before that,
01:56like, you know, it's just, you know, regular, funny,
01:59you know, chill, uppity guy.
02:02But, like, this one was different.
02:03And at the time, you know,
02:04I was looking for something, like, real challenging,
02:06and this came at the right time.
02:08So I was actually excited to take on something like that.
02:13Ooh, no, I understand.
02:15I feel like it takes a lot to really hone into that character.
02:20How long did it take you to prepare?
02:21Did you just, like, snap right into character mode,
02:23or did it take you some time?
02:25I mean, it took a little time.
02:27Like, it didn't take much, but, like, you know,
02:30kind of just doing a little research,
02:31watching, like, documentaries on different serial killers and stuff,
02:34and kind of just seeing, like, they train the thought
02:36and how they process stuff.
02:38And then I kind of just took all that,
02:40combined that together,
02:41and kind of, like, just made my own little, you know,
02:43spin to it, which was cool, so.
02:45I love that.
02:46I do.
02:47Now, I actually interviewed Renika McQueen,
02:51which is the producer.
02:52She's the one that created Stranger in Our House.
02:55What is it like working with her?
02:56Shoot, man, working with Renika, it's funny.
02:59I mean, like, you're going to have laughs,
03:02then you're going to have seriousness.
03:03But, like, one thing I like about her, like,
03:05it's a creative, collaborative process
03:09between a director and an actor.
03:11So, like, I love that work.
03:13Like, working with her has always been a pleasure.
03:16And I was even more honored that she chose me
03:18to be the lead for her series.
03:19Like, that was big for me, so.
03:21Was that the first time working with,
03:23was you working with her, or?
03:24No, so actually we did Family Divided together.
03:26Oh, nice, okay.
03:27Back in 2021, we had did that.
03:29And it was so, it was like,
03:30right after we had that premiere
03:31is when she was brainstorming for it.
03:35Yeah, when she came to me for that.
03:36Because at first it was just posted
03:37at, like, a regular audition.
03:39And I was like, ah, I might do it.
03:40I don't know.
03:41Like, you know, at the time I'm thinking,
03:42like, all right, maybe I'm not old enough to do it.
03:44And then when I did an audition for it,
03:47she called me, like, yo, like,
03:48why you ain't sending your tape?
03:50Like, what you doing?
03:51So, I'm like, all right.
03:52She got you together, huh?
03:53I'm like, you know what?
03:54I'm like, all right,
03:54this has got to be a sign for me to do it.
03:56So, you know, we went from there.
03:59I sent them my tape and then, you know.
04:02I love that.
04:02The rest was history.
04:03That's how you do it.
04:04I mean, Renika, I love her.
04:05Shout out to Renika McQueen.
04:07Yeah, shout out to Renika, man.
04:08Yes.
04:09Chase was it.
04:09Chase and Connor Production,
04:11everybody that works hard
04:13to make really good content.
04:15I mean, the series is fly.
04:16I can't wait to see season number two.
04:19Now, what did your personality,
04:22what did you personally learn
04:23from doing this role?
04:27Like, the way you approach,
04:29would this be a way you approach future roles?
04:32Like, can you see yourself doing more,
04:35I'm not going to say serial killer,
04:37but more roles like this?
04:39Or would you feel like more comedy
04:41is more your set, your setting?
04:43I'd say like a mixture, honestly.
04:45It's always good to stretch yourself
04:47in every different genre as possible.
04:50And, you know, obviously,
04:51there's going to be some where it's like,
04:52okay, maybe this ain't for me.
04:54But, I mean, right now,
04:55I'm kind of open to just exploring
04:59with different characters
05:00and just seeing how far I can take it with that.
05:03I love that.
05:04How long have you been doing acting?
05:06So, for me, I've been doing it
05:07since I was like six.
05:08I mean, it started like...
05:09Really?
05:10Yeah, but it was like on some,
05:12you know, I'm in the church play
05:14at church and like, you know,
05:17just being funny.
05:18Like, I always just took it
05:19as a time to be goofy,
05:20but it ended up turning
05:22into something more.
05:23And like, you know,
05:23people start seeing things.
05:24Like, okay, like, yeah.
05:25Because they spark that love.
05:26Like, yeah, you know,
05:26people start seeing stuff in me.
05:28And, shoot, fast forward to high school.
05:32I had theater class,
05:33regular theater class.
05:34I'm just taking that as an elective.
05:35I'm not really thinking much of it.
05:36But my theater teacher at the time,
05:38she was like, yo, you know,
05:39you should come try out for the,
05:40you know, for the 4-1 acts
05:41or whatever.
05:42At the time, I'm like,
05:43man, I'm not doing that stuff.
05:44Like, that's goofy.
05:46That ain't my thing.
05:47Right.
05:48My homeboy, Jamario,
05:50one of my good best friends,
05:51he actually convinced me to do it.
05:52So, shout out to bro.
05:54But, yeah, so I ended up going.
05:56And then, yeah,
05:58the rest was history.
05:59Did the first,
06:01did my first stage play.
06:02And then, just like,
06:03the reaction I got from the crowd
06:05was just like, yo,
06:05like, dang, okay.
06:06You were in the right place.
06:07Yeah, that's it.
06:09That's it.
06:09No, I love that.
06:11That's amazing.
06:12So, what are you hoping viewers
06:14take away from season two?
06:16It was never going to be
06:18something that was predictable.
06:19Really?
06:20Ooh, yeah.
06:21That's, I say, like,
06:23hey, don't expect the obvious.
06:25You know, so,
06:26that's what I would say.
06:27I'm excited.
06:27I'm excited.
06:28And what's next for you, Brian?
06:30What's your next,
06:31what can we expect from you?
06:32What's next for me?
06:34More movies, more work,
06:35but just transitioning,
06:38you know,
06:38transitioning and testing myself out
06:40on, on the,
06:41on, like, the mainstream level.
06:43Yeah.
06:43I think, you know,
06:45it's always good to,
06:47you know,
06:47obviously continue to do stuff here.
06:49But, at some point,
06:50you know,
06:51not everybody,
06:52you know,
06:52that ain't everybody go,
06:53but at some point,
06:54you got to make the transition.
06:55And I think, for me,
06:57you know,
06:57since I was already in Roto doing that,
06:59but when the strike happened in 2023,
07:01that kind of slowed my process.
07:02So, now it's even more like,
07:04okay, I'm going into it.
07:05I'm going with a chip on my shoulder.
07:06Like, hey,
07:06it's time to really show,
07:08like, all right,
07:09this is what I do.
07:10Because I,
07:11because if I can be honest with you,
07:12like, in the beginning of this stuff,
07:13like, when I started filming,
07:15when I really got on the film scene here,
07:16like,
07:17for me,
07:18it was kind of like,
07:19I was having a hard time adjusting to it
07:21and really accepting,
07:22like, okay,
07:23dang,
07:23you doing this awesome stuff.
07:25Like,
07:25I guess it was kind of like,
07:26I didn't want to,
07:28what I was doing,
07:29I was feeling like,
07:30dang,
07:30I didn't want to make people uncomfortable.
07:32Right.
07:32But, you know,
07:33as time went on,
07:33I was like, man,
07:35you know,
07:35people are going to,
07:35they're going to have to feel how they feel.
07:37They're going to feel how they want to feel.
07:37Yeah.
07:37I got to,
07:38you know,
07:38this is what I want to do.
07:40So it's like,
07:40yo,
07:40absolutely.
07:41Even if they uncomfortable with what I'm doing,
07:42like,
07:43dang,
07:43like,
07:43bro,
07:43you're really doing it.
07:45You know?
07:45And I feel like,
07:46this shows that you are,
07:48you're playing a role.
07:49You're doing a great,
07:50whatever character that you are portraying at that moment.
07:53You're doing that,
07:54you're doing a good job.
07:54Just like Tariq and everybody else,
07:56when you think about,
07:56Oh yeah.
07:57On power.
07:57Yeah.
07:58On power and different series.
08:00Yeah.
08:00When you really body that person,
08:03people in tune,
08:04they,
08:04their clock,
08:05they,
08:05they're tuned into you and it makes them want to see how far you go.
08:09Yeah.
08:10And for me,
08:10I mean,
08:11that's what it's about.
08:12For me,
08:12it ain't really like the whole popularity thing.
08:14I think like when people,
08:15what's fulfilling is when people see your work and they like,
08:18yo,
08:18like you really,
08:19you know what I'm saying?
08:20When they inspire from what you didn't,
08:21from what you didn't did.
08:22So it's just like,
08:23dang,
08:23that right there,
08:24it just be those little moments,
08:25you know,
08:26how it affects other people.
08:28Like,
08:28okay.
08:28Yeah.
08:29Yeah.
08:29It lets you know.
08:30Has it,
08:31has a,
08:31has a kid or anybody ever like came up to you and just like,
08:34Hey,
08:34Oh,
08:35all the time.
08:36So I done had a couple of instances where I'm either at the grocery store or I'm at the gym.
08:40Oh,
08:40you know,
08:40people came up to me,
08:41like I done had a lady,
08:43I'm pushing a cart down the aisle and she just cheesing a smile.
08:46I'm like,
08:46all right,
08:46why this lady looking at me like,
08:47is she cool?
08:49And she's like,
08:49I seen your movie.
08:50She's like,
08:51yeah,
08:51you,
08:51you need to be whooped.
08:52I'm like,
08:52it's funny.
08:54And then,
08:54it's even the moments where I'm at church.
08:57Like I was visiting my girlfriend,
08:59mama church and dude taking up offering.
09:02He just cheesing from ear to ear.
09:04And he like,
09:05I'm like,
09:05why is he looking at me?
09:07Turns out he didn't seen the movie.
09:08Like,
09:08bro,
09:08I seen you in that movie.
09:09I seen you.
09:10Like,
09:11so yeah,
09:11like just seeing that it's,
09:13it's,
09:13it's kind of cool.
09:14You know what I'm saying?
09:14It's cool.
09:15But I never let it get me to the point of like,
09:16Oh yeah,
09:17you know,
09:17I'm,
09:17it's good to stay humble.
09:20It's good to stay humble,
09:21humble in moments like this.
09:22Yeah.
09:22So like,
09:23you know,
09:23it's,
09:24it's cool.
09:24Like I like it.
09:26It's always good to see kind of things just unravel and unfold.
09:30Like stuff that you dreamed of doing when you was younger,
09:33you know?
09:33So absolutely.
09:34It's a good feeling.
09:35I love that.
09:36So you've been doing this since six.
09:37Wow.
09:38Okay.
09:38Yeah.
09:39Well,
09:39I'm excited to see what's next for you.
09:41Yeah.
09:41And I'm going to be looking out.
09:42I'm going to be looking for season two,
09:44which you can find on Amazon and to be soon.
09:46Oh yeah.
09:47You can find on Amazon prime right now.
09:49Okay.
09:49Yeah.
09:49It'll be on to be later on,
09:51but right now you can definitely check out season one at two on Amazon prime.
09:56And also you can check out season one on a to be.
09:58So yeah.
09:59Okay.
09:59I'm excited.
10:00And where can they find you so we can keep up with you?
10:02You know,
10:02we don't want to leave.
10:03Yeah.
10:03You can find me on Instagram at Brian Carstarfin and then you can find me on
10:07Facebook at Brian Carstarfin.
10:09So yeah.
10:10Okay.
10:11Brian,
10:11thank you so much for taking the time out today.
10:13You know,
10:13it's,
10:13it's not the best outside.
10:15So I know it's crazy.
10:16It's a little crazy for sure.
10:17Well,
10:17you took the time.
10:18So I appreciate you so much.
