00:00Has Greenland banned Donald Trump and its descendants?
00:07US President Donald Trump and his descendants have just been banned from setting foot in Greenland for 100 generations,
00:14according to a viral social media post.
00:17It says that the parliament in Nuk has just introduced legislation to that effect,
00:21and it's been seen almost 2 million times as of the time of this fact-check.
00:25It was posted against the backdrop of Trump's rhetoric to acquire the semi-autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark,
00:31which has ramped up in recent weeks.
00:34Greenland, Denmark and the rest of Europe have been steadfast in their resolve to protect Greenland's independence.
00:40Recently, a group of European countries sent a small contingent of troops to Greenland to show Trump that NATO is already present there.
00:47Trump has since threatened a wave of fresh tariffs on European countries for not going along with his plan.
00:52But no, a law to ban Donald Trump and his lineage for the next 100 generations
00:57is not one of the measures Greenland and Denmark are using to keep the territory out of the president's grasp.
01:03The halfway post, the account that shared the post on X, labels itself as a comedy and satire account.
01:09It also describes itself as Dadaist, an art movement that goes against the traditional ideas of beauty
01:15and uses humour and the absurd instead.
01:18There haven't been any reputable reports or announcements by the Greenlandic or Danish governments
01:23that any such ban against Trump is on the cards.
01:26Nevertheless, the president's ambitions to take control of Greenland have sent shudders through Europe and wider NATO,
01:33with some fearing a crumbling of the alliance from within if the US enters into conflict with fellow member Denmark.
01:39Trump argues that US control of Greenland is necessary for national security in the Arctic area.
01:45Still, its Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen assures that it wants to remain part of Denmark.
