00:00After the U.S. raid in Venezuela that resulted in the arrest of President Nicolas Maduro,
00:06Trump repeated his intentions to annex Greenland for the U.S.
00:11We need Greenland from the standpoint of national security.
00:16Trump regularly cites national security interests as a reason for his intentions towards Greenland.
00:22But according to this expert, Washington already has a security foothold in Greenland
00:27and the Trump administration's intentions almost certainly pertain more to natural resources.
00:33The president puts a lot of emphasis on resources, mineral resources, energy resources, commercial opportunities.
00:42You know, we can debate how easily these would be realized in Greenland.
00:46Investors have so far not been that keen to be involved.
00:50But clearly this is part of President Trump's worldview.
00:53While the Danish government insists that the territory is not for sale,
00:59Lesser says Denmark and Europe have some cards to play as well.
01:02I do think there are a lot of things on the table because the administration does seem to put a primacy
01:08on economic and commercial issues, among other things.
01:11I think there is the possibility to do, in some sense, a package deal across the Atlantic
01:22in which many things are in play.
01:25The U.S. and Denmark are both founding members of NATO.
01:29Nevertheless, Lesser warns that the constant threats are disruptive
01:33of a transatlantic security relationship that's already in jeopardy.
