Mozambique's President Daniel Francisco Chapo was seen on an aerial surveillance mission of the floodwaters on Saturday - with one of the flights

also conducting a dramatic impromptu rescue.

Chapo and First Lady Gueta Selemane were aboard the helicopter flying over submerged roads and fields. A pilot on another flight was seen lifting stranded citizens to safety before the president greeted them.

"We had 12 of our brothers... They haven't had a bite to eat since yesterday [...] They were nearly dying. There was also a baby—a child we had to save. The water was already reaching them," Chapo stated.

"We are going to continue working to save our brothers who are being swept away by the water. We know that afterward, we must continue working to bring tents, food, and many other things," he added.

Chapo cancelled his trip to the 2026 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, to remain on the ground.

Over 5,000 houses have been destroyed, and major roads are cut off, leaving nearly 200,000 people at high risk of displacement.

Chkwe, Guija, and Massingir were hardest hit by water releases from the Massingir Dam, a necessary step to prevent dam failure that caused the Limpopo River to overflow.

As of Monday, Gaza Province remains the most critical zone, with over 100 deaths reported nationwide this rainy season.
