Flash floods triggered by torrential rains have killed at least 88 people and displaced thousands across western Kenya, as entire villages were submerged and farmland destroyed.

Footage captured on Tuesday along the Kisumu-Homa Bay border shows inundated homes and waterlogged fields. Residents are seen navigating floodwaters by boat to reach shelters, while herders struggle to move cattle through the deep water.

"So far, the total number of people who have been displaced is more than 4,500,” said Seth Oluoch Agwanda, Chief of West Nyakach. “Today, we have managed to rescue ninety people from the raging flood waters."

Agwanda said more than 3,500 hectares of farmland had been lost, including beans, maize, vegetables, millet, watermelon, and other crops.

"We were crossing with our herd because where we were was badly flooded, and some of our cattle got washed away into the lake, and we have not recovered them to date,” said local farmer Evans Koga.

"The rains have really caused us a lot of damage: the waters got into our homes, our crops were destroyed, our animals were washed away, and our children can’t go to school,” he added. “These rains have really hit us so badly.”

Authorities warned that the situation could worsen as heavy rains continue, raising concerns over humanitarian needs and food security in the region.
