Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Sunday labelled members of the opposition 'terrorists', accusing them of attempting to use violence to overturn the results of the country’s recent presidential election, in which he was declared the winner of a seventh term.

“The opposition is lucky, because if all our members stood up, there would be no opposition in Uganda [...] But some of the opposition are wrong and also terrorists,” he said in Kampala on Monday.

Museveni -who has ruled Uganda since 1986- warned the opposition against continuing 'destabilising actions'.

“The plan was that gangs with machetes should attack the polling stations. And they did. When the police were defeated, they came with machetes to attack the police station, and they were shot,” he alleged.

Museveni issued 'free advice' to his rivals, saying, "We don't want our country to be like Libya. So to all the traitors, this is free advice from me: please stop what you are doing, because we know everything, and you will not succeed.”

He outlined priorities for his next term, placing the fight against poverty at the top of his agenda. He also stressed the need to reform the education and health sectors, while criticising corruption within government institutions.

“This corruption annoys people,” the African leader said, urging elected leaders to closely monitor hospitals and public services.

The vote took place under a nationwide internet shutdown, which the government said was to 'curb misinformation', while critics said it masked 'vote rigging'.

Technical failures delayed polling, prompting the use of manual registers. President Museveni, however, alleged these failures were an opposition tactic to manipulate the election.
